Fashion Labels Appear Not to Be following Current Trends
The downturn in the economic system has given us all a fashion rethink. It’s been well commented that the downturn in the economy has to a great extent affected the fashion industry. Although recessions occur once every 15-20 years, this current recession we’re in is going to have a lasting impact on how we see fashion. We are living in a very practical period these days. Before these pragmatic days we’re now living in, we revelled in the frivolity of fashion - nothing was expensive or too extreme - you could only be accused of being too dull. It’s different today though : the catwalks and fashion labels are getting bad publicity. And since everybody’s mindful of globalization, even inexpensive fashion brands are copping bad publicity for using sweatshops to develop their garments! What went wrong? Why is it that people turning against labels ?
First off, fashion is very much thriving and always will be. As a matter of fact, looking on the web there is huge competition between online shop traders (e.g. searching for wholesale plus-size fashion) - a signal there is still a great need for fashion. It’s the old-school view that is expiring - of being dictated to by the established brands. Fashion has always looked at the public rather than vice versa, and today many factors are turning us off big fashion labels. For a start, people are a lot more conscious of globalization, and flaunting your clothing labels can give the impression you are egotistical and inconsiderate in certain circles. Secondly, we’re hard up! Fashion has always been a luxury, not an essential. In an economic downturn, luxury items are the first to be left on the shop shelves. Finally, people define themselves much more individually nowadays -we don’t need to be ordered what to wear or how to act, there’s no huge “clan” to assimilate or fit in to, and fashion needs that type of sheep-like thinking to trade in large amounts.
What is the future for fashion labels? Like ever, they need to adapt to exist - create a larger range of clothing lines to supply to more niches of the market. If you’re a boutique shop offering individual fashion lines at a decent cost, the future looks bright for you despite the subdued economic times we are experiencing. These days, people are shuffling their styles, purchasing from markets and more personal, bargain-priced fashion stores.
