Fighting the Boundaries

“Great peace have they who love your law,
and nothing can make them stumble.” (Psalm 119:165 NIV)

I was taking my puppy for her daily morning walk. As usual, she had more energy than I could dream of, especially at that hour. She pulled on her leash, going as fast as she could with me holding on. If only she could get free, she could run and chase to her heart’s content. But to her, that leash restrained her fun and her freedom. What my puppy viewed as a restriction was actually a boundary created by her loving owner for her protection.

I imagine this is how many young people feel about their parents’ rules, and God’s laws. If only they could be free, they could really live! We as parents aren’t trying to be a killjoy with our teens, but we are setting loving boundaries for their spiritual, physical, and emotional protection.

This is also the way with God’s laws. Our minister says that when we break God’s laws, we are broken. That’s because God is putting loving boundaries around us. While we may think that sin is pleasurable, and it may be for a short while, he knows that the consequences are painful. He is trying to protect us from the results of sin.

The worm on the fishhook looks very desirable. But when it bites, the result can be deadly. Satan dangles the bait above us, enticing us to bite. He makes it look delicious. But partaking can be just as dangerous for us.

Instead of resisting God’s protective rules, let’s be thankful for them, and abide by them. For they will bring us abundant life, not the sorrow of sin.

Love Never Fails

“Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do.” Luke
23:24

How many times do you suppose we’ve hurt people and not
realized it; to have reacted without thought; to have deemed
another not ready, worthy, capable, or spiritual enough; to have
picked our favorite over another; to have excluded one who
didn’t measure up; to sit by one more attractive, popular, or
fun; to have been in such a hurry to greet one that we bypassed
another; to have closed our hearts to someone whose words we
didn’t want to hear; to think we’ve done God a favor by getting
rid of someone we thought difficult, different, or wrong?

How many times do you suppose that that prayer has been prayed
for us, “Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do?”

Were we to ask God to open our eyes, to see ourselves as He
sees us; to examine our heart, actions, attitudes, and motives
… God would be faithful to show us how we are hurting His
cause.

Once we’ve found our sin and corrected it, we can ask God to
show us another and, then, another. One step at a time, we’ll be
weeding out the flesh and Satan’s power over us while winning
the world to Christ.

Love never fails, I Co. 13:8. It’s guaranteed!

Practical Steps To Obtaing Bible Healing

There are promises of healing throughout the Bible. There are also practical steps to obtain our healing. Three of these practical steps are found in the following scripture.

Prov 3:7-8
7 Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil.
8 It shall be health to thy navel, and marrow to thy bones. (KJV)

(1) Be not wise in your own eyes.
(2) Fear the Lord.
(3) Depart from evil. These three things produce “health to thy navel and marrow to thy bones.”

These three things shall be health for us throughout our being. To our navel and to the marrow of our bones signifies a complete, thorough health.

These three things must go together. Do not eliminate any one of them and depend on just the other two. Do not remove two of them and depend on just one of them. Obey these words to the fullest. Utilize all three steps. Then it shall be health to thy navel and marrow to thy bones.

Then in the verse below, we find some encouraging words concerning our healing as it relates to our station in life.

Jer 30:17
17 For I will restore health unto thee, and I will heal thee of thy wounds, saith the LORD; because they called thee an Outcast, saying, This is Zion, whom no man seeketh after. (KJV)

Jeremiah 30:17 is one of the most faith-building Scripture in the entire Bible. It speaks of something that keeps professional counselors in business; it speaks of total rejection. It describes a people rejected to the point of being called Outcast. It speaks of the rejection of a people, so thorough and final, that no one ever sought after them to find out what went so very wrong for them.

In other words, God says to us that even if we are called Outcast by those around us, He will still heal us. Even if we dwell on the wrong side of the tracks, He will still heal us.
He says to us here that no matter who we are, He will still heal us.

He says to that no matter where we are from, He will still heal us. He says that no matter where we live, He will still heal us. We may be in such a state that “no man will ever seek after us.” No matter! He will still heal us.

God says that He will restore our health to us. He also says that he will heal us of our wounds. Thanks be unto God! He gave us a healing Jesus.

Intelligent Design On Another Planet?

Imagine finding a planet where robots are programmed so that they can make other robots just like themselves from raw materials.

Now, imagine an alien visitor coming to the planet and, after many years of studying these robots, coming to the conclusion that since science can explain how these robots work, function, and reproduce there’s no reason to believe that there was an ultimate intelligent designer behind them.

The analogy above certainly is not perfect but it is sufficient to reveal the fallacious thinking of those who attack intelligent design behind life and the universe.

Chance physical processes can produce some level of order but it is not rational to believe that the highest levels of order in life and the universe are by chance. For example, amino acids have been shown to be able to come into existence by chance but not more complex structures such as proteins which require that the various amino acids be in a precise sequence, just like the letters in a sentence. A single cell has millions of proteins.

There is no innate chemical tendency for amino acids to bond with one another in a sequence. Any one amino acid can just as easily bond with any other. The only reason at all for why the various amino acids bond with one another in a precise sequence in the cells of our bodies is because they’re directed to do so by an already existing sequence of molecules in our genetic code. Without being in a proper sequence protein molecules will not function.

The sequence of molecules in DNA (the genetic code) determines the sequence of molecules in proteins. Furthermore, without DNA there cannot be RNA, but without RNA there cannot be DNA. And without eiether DNA and RNA there cannot be proteins, and without proteins there cannot be either DNA or RNA. They’re all mutually dependent upon each other for existence!

If humans must use intelligence to perform genetic engineering, to meaningfully manipulate the genetic code, then what does that say about the origin of the genetic code itself!

If the cell had evolved it would have had to be all at once. A partially evolved cell cannot wait millions of years to become complete because it would be highly unstable and quickly disintegrate in the open environment.

The great British scientist Sir Frederick Hoyle has said that the probability of the sequence of molecules in the simplest cell coming into existence by chance is equivalent to a tornado going through a junk yard of airplane parts and assembling a 747 Jumbo Jet!

Considering the enormous complexity of life, it is much more logical to believe that the genetic and biological similarities between all species is due to a common Designer rather than common biological ancestry. It is only logical that the great Designer would design similar functions for similar purposes and different functions for different purposes in all of the various forms of life.

What if we should find evidence of life on Mars? Wouldn’t that prove evolution? No. It wouldn’t be proof that such life had evolved from non-living matter by chance natural processes. And even if we did find evidence of life on Mars it would have most likely have come from our very own planet - Earth! In the Earth’s past there was powerful volcanic activity which could have easily spewed dirt containing microbes into outer space which eventually could have reached Mars. A Newsweek article of September 21, 1998, p.12 mentions exactly this possibility.

Contrary to popular belief, scientists have never created life in the laboratory. What scientists have done is genetically alter or engineer already existing forms of life, and by doing this scientists have been able to produce new forms of life. However, they did not produce these new life forms from non-living matter. Even if scientists ever do produce life from non-living matter it won’t be by chance so it still wouldn’t help support any argument for evolution.

We also know from the law of entropy in science that the universe does not have the ability to have sustained itself from eternity. The existence and complexity of the universe point to a Supreme Designer and Creator!

Those advocating the teaching of intelligent design are not demanding that Darwinian theory no longer be taught. Rather, the advocates of intelligent design want the merits of both theories taught side by side when the issue of origins is covered in science classes and textbooks. This is only fair.

Science cannot prove we are here by either design (creation) or by chance (evolution), but students should have full information available to decide which position science best supports.

What we believe about life’s origins does influence our philosophy and value of life as well as our view of ourselves and others. This is no small issue!

Just because the laws of science can explain how life and the universe operate and work doesn’t mean there is no Maker. Would it be rational to believe that there’s no designer behind airplanes because the laws of science can explain how airplanes operate and work?

Natural laws are adequate to explain how the order in life, the universe, and even a microwave oven operates, but mere undirected natural laws cannot fully explain the origin of such order.

An organization of highly qualified scientists, known as the Institute for Creation Research (www.icr.org), has published some excellent books and material supporting faith in intelligent design for life and the universe.

Books published by ICR cover various issues such as the origin of life, genetic and biological similarities between species, the limits to biological variation and natural selection in nature, the fossil record, the age of the earth, etc.

God in America RIP

God in America, R.I.P

One of the great mysteries that’s plagued me is the existence of “God”. I admit to referencing God in my columns and sometime praying to a higher power for guidance when the path before me is unclear and clouded. But still, I often find myself wondering; what is God? And why are so many people going out of their way to keep him out of courtrooms, school houses, town meeting halls and government. God must surely have torqued off several institutions and people to warrant such banishment and fervor at the mere mention of his name. Let me caveat the above paragraph by saying that I’m not a church going individual and have a great many “issues” with organized religion. Those who know me well can attest to this claim. I tend to lean more toward Taoism in practicality and view “God” as the binding intellect and fabric of the Universe. I believe in a supreme being, but I don’t necessarily agree with how organized religions do things and interpret things in Gods name.

Now it’s common knowledge that God has been given a bad wrap in several Christian biblical stories and with the Catholic Church. God is kinda like Santa Clause with super powers; “he sees you when you’re sleeping, he knows when you’re awake, he’s marking off every bad thing you’ve done so you’ll burn for eternity’s sake.” Well, the Catholic Church has enough problems with priests, altar boys, affairs with secretaries, and a long history of simply unpleasant things that have been done to people in “God’s” name. I’m sure Galileo would have some choice words on this topic but I digress. Bottom line; is God an avenging force that will burn you in hell, a real Old Testament deity that has no tolerance for anything? Or is he the New Testament God of love and forgiveness that many newer, younger religions are depicting God to be? Is God the burning sword of justice or the tranquil dove of peace? The answer is probably both. Not being a religious scholar and not knowing the mind or intent of God, I can only guess at what God is and what God thinks. I can’t comprehend the power or the intellect of a being so vast that he has reign over everything. Perhaps that’s why God is feared by some. Such a great power makes Man and his institutions paltry and irrelevant in comparison.

I simply don’t know. My view on organized religion, especially the Catholic Church is skeptical at best (Being in Boston at the heart of the priest pedophile scandal jades my outlook a bit). Churches are run by men and men are corrupt and fallible, history proves this point over and over again. But again, religion aside, why is there this inane fear of God? Everywhere on the news, there’s some group trying to squash the Ten Commandments or have a Nativity scene taken down over the holidays. Who is God and what is his message and why are so many people terrified of it? Let’s examine some of the recent Anti-God activities occurring locally and nationally.

1. Prayer in School. This is a big to do over a few moments of silence in the beginning of the day for each student to reflect privately on his/her faith or lack of faith. I don’t ever recall reading one of these bills that say you must pray a Rosary of meditate towards the West or cite a Wicca chant. It’s simply a minute for each individual to address his or her faith before facing the rigors of the upcoming day. Is it the word prayer that has School Officials in such an uproar? Well, I‘ve got some news; every kid prays in school; before a Math test, before a Science Test there’s the “Oh God, PLEASE don’t let me blow this.” That, dear friends, is a prayer and one I’ve muttered on many occasions in my academic career. So what’s the big deal? I hope somebody can give me a rational explanation for banning prayer in school in the form of a few moments of silence. Again, the bills as drafted did not mandate and particular form of prayer or particular religion be mandated; just prayer in general in a non denominational fashion.

2. The Ten Commandments. Man I just loved that movie with Charlton Heston as Moses. I can still sit down on Easter afternoon and sit through it and be mesmerized by the story. I’ve read these commandments over and over again and after careful consideration have come to this conclusion; what’s the problem?
ONE: ‘You shall have no other gods before Me.’
TWO: ‘You shall not make for yourself a carved image–any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.’
THREE: ‘You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain.’
FOUR: ‘Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.’
FIVE: ‘Honor your father and your mother.’
SIX: ‘You shall not murder.’
SEVEN: ‘You shall not commit adultery.’
EIGHT: ‘You shall not steal.’
NINE: ‘You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.’
TEN: ‘You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, nor his male servant, nor his female servant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything that is your neighbor’s.’

Don’t steal, don’t lie, Honor thy parents (Ok I’m paraphrasing here), Have no other God before me etc. As far as the other Gods part and the false idol one, I can’t see too much to be riled up over. I don’t see any religion, or people in this country worshiping statues of cows or goats. When was the last time somebody in this country made a temple to Zeus or Apollo? God is whomever or what ever an individual makes God out to be. That’s an exploration and a journey that each individual embarks upon alone. Faith/ belief in these rules are an individual decision. Most of the 10 are, in my humble opinion, non- denominational. Don’t kill, don’t steal, don’t lie, don’t cheat on your wife, don’t boink your neighbor’s wife or anything else of your neighbors. I really don’t see a whole hek of a lot wrong with these; maybe we could post the items six through ten. Even the religious ones as they’re written aren’t offensive. Don’t take the name of the Lord..YOUR GOD in vain. Meaning each individual perception of what God is should be respected and honored and not defiled by said individual. Again, what’s the problem?

These ten rules have pissed off more attorneys in the AFLCIO than any Union busting case in history. Again there’s this vendetta against God in this country. Yet most people claim to believe in a God in some form. I can see why Lawyers wouldn’t like them; don’t lie, don’t cheat, don’t bear false witness. That would put every lawyer everywhere out of business; then where would the courts be?

3. The Nativity Scene. Again, I’m sorry, bear with my stupidity. We can celebrate Kwanza and learn about that in school, we can teach our children about the Menorah and Hanukkah in school but we can’t learn about Christmas or display a Nativity scene because of some separation clause of church and state that isn’t really a separation clause at all. The Constitution merely claims that there shall be no State sponsored religion. This simply means that the government cannot favor one philosophy over another. OK, then don’t allow any religion in schools. Ban discussing Kwanza and every African American political activist would be screaming racism of every 6:00 news broadcast from sea to shining sea, but ban a nativity scene and that’s proper interpretation of the Constitution. Fine, then all non Christian students have to go to school on December 25th since that’s a religious holiday, after all, the Christian students don’t get the Jewish Holidays off. Can anyone else see how stupid this is? We have a bunch of liberal socialist wacko’s who have insecurity about God and religion trying to ban anything spiritual in favor of everything secular by utilizing the courts as a bludgeoning hammer. Christmas vacation is now Winter break, COME ON !!!

This country was founded on the basis of religious freedom, not the lack of religion or freedom from religion, whatever one’s spiritual or lack of spiritual beliefs may or may not be. Why is it that those who don’t believe in the existence of a supreme being are given favor and preference over those that do? The word God appears in our Pledge of Allegiance, it is printed on our currency and the word God is said at the beginning of every court session. So, I must be missing something. For a society that mentions God on our currency, in our nation’s pledge and in the courts, the foundation of our Justice System, we still seem to want Him squelched out of existence. This seems to be a rather large dichotomy of beliefs, dare I say even hypocritical.

There seems to be an active movement by the intellectual elite to banish faith or spirituality from our governing bodies and our learning institutions. The effort to eradicate God in our schools and our government is real and alarmingly successful. The religious majority, whatever their faith may be, need to step up and make their voices heard. If those who have faith are silent, God will go the way of the Plains Buffalo and the Dodo; into extinction. Cultural decay begins with the loss of spiritual belief. These lessons are evident in history; one need only study the Greeks and the Romans as examples of the decaying of a society over time. Ban God from our country and we are following in their path of decline, a path we, as a nation, are already walking.

Nuff said.

I’ll Fly Away Not the Song - The Truth is Still Stranger than Fiction

Three views about when the removal of believers takes place are
held by most Christians throughout the world. Those who think we
are taken at the beginning of the great tribulation are
pre-tribulationists. Those who think the snatching away takes
place in the middle of the great tribulation are the mid-trib
folks. Finally there are the post tribulationists, which is self
explanatory.

Anyone holding one of the three views mentioned has an ample
supply of proof texts to support their views. Very few proof
texts are available for the post tribulation theory and it is
barely supportable. Most people are on the side of the
pre-tribulation rapture; unfortunately it is often for the wrong
reasons. Many people view a pre-tribulation rapture as an
enormous escape hatch. When the going gets rough the
pretribulationists just get going, or just get gone. The fact
that their views may be correct doesn’t diminish the fact that
it is the view most likely to leave the believer unprepared.

It is human nature to take the path of least resistance but it
is high folly to think it will be available right at the point
when things start really getting rough. The bottom line for the
unprepared is that they can only hope their views are right. But
hope is a long way from preparedness.

Many Christians have failed to do the math, not to mention
engaging good sense. It is easy to see why this could happen
considering that no one really wants to see their world torn up
from the roots, and in the vast sticky quagmire of apocalyptic
interpretations and speculations it is easy to get confused. As
a result they have not noticed that one of the simplest ways to
know when the rapture will take place is clearly provided in
scripture. It is not so much when, but it is the latest point at
which it could happen, and also a promise that it can’t happen
before a specific event.

The prophet Daniel spoke of it hundreds of years before Christ.
Jesus reiterated it with a few more details. Finally the book of
Revelation shows it as a pivotal event in the judgment to come.
Simply put the event is the abomination of desolation. When ye
therefore shall see the abomination desolation, spoken of by
Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let
him understand.) Mt 24:15 And arms shall stand on his part, and
they shall pollute the sanctuary of strength, and shall take
away the daily sacrifice, and they shall place the abomination
that maketh desolate. Daniel 11:31 And from the time that the
daily sacrifice shall be taken away, and the abomination that
maketh desolate set up, there shall he a thousand two hundred
amid ninety days. Daniel 12:11

The time is halfway through the last seven years in which the
antichrist rules the world. The result is the pouring out of the
wrath of God. Rev 16:2. Without getting bogged down in
eschatological theory, semantic word games or other second
coming hype here is the picture in all of its blaring
simplicity. Since the wrath of God is not poured out until the
antichrist does the abomination of desolation that means this is
the last point we could possibly be on the earth according to
the promise of I Thessalonians 1:10. Because this is true, that
puts the mid-tribulationists at the top of the list of those who
are most likely to have it right. This kind of interpretation
comes under the heading of… if the scripture makes plain
sense, seek no other sense.

I always appendage my teaching on the rapture with this equally
important fact, the rapture could come at any time God chooses
to make it happen. All theology is subject to the ultimate
sovereignty of God. The pre-tribulation theory is the most
petted, preferred and defended for a reason. The reason is that
believers fail to differentiate between who and what is causing
the tribulation in those last days. The antichrist makes trouble
for the believer, and then God makes trouble for the antichrist.
We are promised that God will not pour his wrath out on his own
but we are never promised that we can escape the troubles
incurred at the onset of the rule of the antichrist. Rather, we
are told to resist his rule which of itself implies trouble Mk
8:35.

In a country where we are waiting for more of Gods unbridled
blessings it is hard to teach believers that they may not only
have to give something up to fight evil, but ultimately that
something, may be their lives, literally. If your rapture
theology includes the possibility that you may have to give up
your life, you may he happy to find out that even if you held
the wrong view you couldn’t possibly lose anything. More
importantly if you are not wrong at the very least you will be
prepared.

Being ready is part of Gods plan for us when it has to do with
his return. In fact it is a command and an expectation that our
Savior has clearly made known to all of us. Therefore be ye also
ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man
cometh. Mt 24:44

Why Receive Christian Pre-marital Counseling?

Why Christian Pre-marital Counseling?

“Love is long suffering, and is kind; love has no envy, love is
not boastful, love does not behave itself inappropriately, seeks
not its own, is not easily provoked, thinks no evil, rejoices
not in injustice, but rejoices in the truth; love bears all
things, believes everything, endures everything”. 1 Corinthians
13:4-7

These beautiful words hold us to a high standard. That is why it
has been said that before marriage one ought to open our eyes
wide, but afterwards keep them half closed. In order to hold up
this standard, so necessary for a marriage to work, we need to
choose wisely. To decide if you are ready for marriage, you need
to choose someone you can trust, because distrust erodes a
relationship, and so does undeserved trust. You also need to
know what your responsibilities to the marriage partner are so
that you can evaluate yourself realistically. These two things
can be done with the help of pre-marital therapy.

Why do you need Christian pre-marital therapy? The quote above
is from the Bible. The greatest book of love is the Bible. The
book of Luke is considered by many to be the most beautiful book
ever written. The book of Luke, as well as the gospels of
Mathew, Mark, and John, tells how Jesus died to save us - the
believers and now the church- from our sins. “Husbands, love
your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, giving himself
up for it”. Ephesians 5:25. God is the expert, par excellence,
on love.

There is nothing wrong with going to a psychologist, a social
worker, a professional counselor, or a psychiatrist for
pre-marital and marital therapy. In fact I would encourage you
because churches sometimes give only six sessions of pre-marital
couple therapy, or group pre-marital therapy with non
professional married couples as group leaders and this is barely
just enough. Many couples who have received pre-marital therapy
say that it helped them but that they wish they had received
more therapy. There is so much need in the church for marital,
family, addiction, and other kinds of counseling, that there is
not enough pre-marital therapy. I would recommend supplementing
the church’s pre-marital therapy with other pre-marital
counseling.

However, Christian pre-marital counseling adds a dimension that
secular therapies do not usually have. For example, the
Christian counselor advises couples not to have sex before
marriage. In his book on dating, Boy Meets Girl, Pastor Joshua
Harris explains how a manager of a hotel for honeymooners would
run out of activities for the newly married to do. This was
because the now bored couples had pre-marital sex. Whereas,
Joshua and his wife, who did not have sex prior to marriage,
hardly left their room!

In the city where I live there is a saying among the
non-believers. They say that marriage kills sex. But it is not
marriage that kills sex, but pre-marital sex that kills
marriage. I knew of one couple that lived together and had sex
everyday before to marriage. After marriage, the wife confided,
they had sex once a month. It is not worth it to ruin twenty
five or more years of marital sex for one year or even less of
pre-marital sex.

If you are contemplating marriage and you are living together,
you must move apart and stop having sex for a time until you get
married under the guidance of the pastor or Christian counselor.
Physical intimacy is like a battery. It becomes charged with non
sexual activities and gives off energy with sex. Do not skip
that pre-marriage charging time. When thinking about what
pre-marital therapy is, people have different points of view.
One woman tells how she was looking forward to marital therapy
thirty years ago. “I thought that we would receive counseling
courses about marital responsibility, but the entire time, the
courses, which were called ‘marital counseling’, were about
catechism.” She was disappointed as were many people in the
course.

Decades later, now divorced, she expects that marital counseling
should be about what marriage is, what people expect it to be,
and what it will really be like. Dr. Wayne Mack makes a point
that partners differ in expectations and should not wait until
marriage to discuss these differences.

Dr. Nancy Alvarez, secular psychologist and sexologist says that
some men want marriage with weekends off. That means they spend
weekends drinking with their male friends as if they were
single, instead of being with their wife. Obviously, that does
not work out. Couples should also discuss why they are in love
with one another. It has been observed that some people become
happy when they hear why their betrothed wants to marry them,
others become angry.

It is certainly natural for a marital counselor to talk about
spiritual intimacy. In the book, The Five Love Needs of Men and
Women, Christian marital experts Dr. Gary and Barbara Rosberg
explain how there are two kinds of intimacy in marriage,
physical and spiritual. Differences in religion could lead to a
lack of understanding and different values. But not everything
is religion.

Counselor Grisel López of El Sendero de la Cruz Christian Church
in Puerto Rico explains that even in the case that the couple is
of the same religion, some couples do not have compatibility of
ministries. For example, if both are church leaders, and one
sings in the altar and the other preaches, they are compatible.
But if one is training to be a foreign missionary and the other
is a pastor of a local church, then one of the two will have to
give up his or her dreams for the success of the other, because
they can not make both dreams come true and live together
happily at the same time.

She adds that even church leaders, who know the Bible in
general, still need pre-marital counseling. Some churches do not
require pre-marital counseling for church leaders because the
leaders know Christianity well, yet the divorce rate for
Christians is about the same as for non-Christian marriages.

According to Dr. Wayne A. Mack, some of the things covered in
pre-marital counseling are relations with in-laws, making a
budget together, comparing differences in the way each one
expresses love, good communication (a factor in most marital
problems), and conflict resolution. It is important to plan
ahead how you will approach problem solving, not waiting for the
problems to begin and then start by seeking marital therapy.
This is because there will be problems anyway so reducing their
volatility will prevent bad memories that are hard to forget
later.

Dr. Mack’s workbook, Preparing for Marriage God’s Way, can be
used both in addition to marital therapy, (or independently, for
those persons who live in areas where there is little
availability of Christian pre-marital therapy). Two copies of
the workbook are used. Each member of the couple reads and fills
out the answers individually. Then the couple meet and discus
their answers together. Mack suggests they can make note of
significant differences and seek therapy for those issues as
well.

Pre-marital counseling can be fun also. You get to take
personality tests with your betrothed, learning more about each
other in the process. Or it could lead to more deeper and
interesting conversations to talk with your loved one. Some
people think they already know each other well. But even people
who have been married twenty years face surprises.

You should also find out some of your betrothed’s faults in the
process. There may be faults that you understand about, this is
called unconditional love. But there could also be faults that
you do not tolerate. Some things are not negotiable like giving
little importance to fidelity. Others might not matter to one
husband, for example, that his future wife likes a relaxed style
of housekeeping, as long as she is a business woman, but it
could matter a lot to another man. Counselor Grisel López
teaches that the best way to find your ideal love is to tell the
truth about how you are so you can find someone who will be
happy with you instead of turned off. If you do not reveal your
faults you will not know if it is safe to relax your guard with
your betrothed and find the joy of being loved as you are.

A fire drill…

“Jump into the Fire”

Terry Dashner (www.ffcba.org)

You can stand next to a stream of water and not get wet because
the banks provide the current’s boundaries.

You cannot stand next to wind because it has no boundaries. You
can stand in it only.

You can stand neither next to fire nor in the fire without
feeling the effects of fire. Fire like water can be contained,
but its properties are very different. Fire like wind can engulf
you, but fire is different from wind. Fire uniquely defines the
Father God. In Psalm 50:3 we read, “Our God shall come and shall
not keep silence. A fire shall devour before Him, and it shall
be very tempestuous round about Him.” And again in Hebrews fire
is a metaphor for God. The Bible says that God is a consuming
fire.

So what does this say to us? If we want God, we’ve got to be
willing to burn. If we are right with God, we are on fire and
people around us feel the effects of it. If we’re on fire with
God others not only feel His presence in our company, but they
also see light. You are the light of the world, said Jesus. In
light there is no darkness, only transparency. The fire with its
light makes us transparent so that others may see Jesus living
in us.

Keep the faith. Stay the course. Jesus is coming again. This
time He is coming with judgment fires.

Blessing to you, Pastor T.

Do We Really Need God?

The human being is endowed with ability. We have the capacity to do things. However, our ability is inherently limited. The human being is not almighty and so cannot accomplish all things. Because human capability is finite we find that a person cannot by his own powers alone ensure the success of all his pursuits and undertakings in life. A human being is not able to ensure his good health and the safety of his life at all times. A human being is not able to ensure his welfare throughout life. The fact that we experience anxiety, worry, fear and doubt is clear indication that our ability is not always sufficient to handle life’s hazards, difficulties and challenges.

We all desire happiness, good health and success in life. Yet on our own we cannot guarantee the attainment or maintenance of this state of things we desire. What this means is that for us to satisfy these cravings we need help from a power much greater than ourselves. This almighty power we need is God.

The human being, obviously, needs the help of God in order to live a completely happy and successful life.

Mankind’s need for God has always been there. Our search after Him is an age-long one. The early man, undoubtedly, had to face great odds in his struggle for survival. The hazards he had to contend with were indeed enormous. He had little protection against the elements. He was prone to ravage by disease. There was the ever present risk of being devoured by wild animals. He was not always sure of getting the food he needed. There was no guarantee he would succeed whenever he left his cave to roam the wild in search of food. There was also the risk of being struck down by other savages. He did come to realize that on his own he could not cope successfully with life’s hazards and challenges. He did feel the need to reach out to a power much greater than himself to help ensure his safety and survival. His worship of rivers, trees, hills and other objects was obviously undertaken in the hope of getting the help and protection he evidently needed.

Our circumstances today are a lot different. Yet we still have to face hazards, difficulties and challenges which we cannot always meet successfully as a result of natural limitations in our ability. Now think about this. That pursuit or undertaking which means so much to you, maybe it is an examination, or a job interview or a business deal maybe it is an official task or a performance or some treatment you are undergoing, are you able to ensure that it will turn out successfully? Can you ensure that the next time you wave goodbye to your loved ones and leave home, you will not be killed in a road mishap? That you will not wake up tomorrow to find that you have a malignant tumour that will claim your life within a few weeks? Are you able to ensure that you will not lose your job and so find yourself unable to provide for yourself and your loved ones? That your business will not fail and you fall into financial ruin? What about the safety and well-being of your loved ones? Can you guarantee that the loved one who went shopping will not be shot dead in an attack by armed robbers? Are you able to guarantee that your child who left for school happily in the morning will not be abducted and not make it back home alive? That loved whose return you are eagerly awaiting, can you ensure that he or she will not be killed in a car or a plane crash, that your reunion will not take place at the morgue? Can you ensure that the loved one who is so alive and well today will not succumb to illness in the days ahead and you find yourself plunged into grief?

The possibilities that a person will experience failure or misfortune in life are endless. The simple fact is that we need the help of God in order to successfully face the hazards, difficulties and challenges of life. Life cannot be completely happy and successful without God.

CRUSHED HOPES AND DREAMS

CRUSHED HOPES AND DREAMS

Jeremiah 29 verse 11 “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.”

I have been serving the Lord for over 18 years. I am not just a Sunday church goer; I have a daily relationship with my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. I remember the day the Lord called me aside, and said “I want you to work for me. I will be with you and I will use you in great ways.” I said, “Lord, why don’t you choose someone else, someone with more theological background and experience?” He replied, “I have chosen you and I will be with you.” The next morning I awoke at 5:00 AM, and the Lord spoke to me and said, “Turn on the TV.” I did, and there was Gomer , of the Gomer Pyle TV show saying, “Don’t choose me, choose someone more experienced.” They chose him to be on a recruiting poster, and on the corner of the recruiting picture of Gomer was an eye, Sergeant Carter’s eye overlooking him. The Lord spoke to me through this and said, “Just like Sergeant Carter overlooking Gomer, my all seeing eye will be overlooking you.”

Since that 1987 experience, the Lord has used me in many ways. During this time, I have experienced many crushed hopes and dreams. Often, plans that I thought would work out, didn’t. I’ve experienced the hopelessness of poverty, the stigma of rejection, the burden of being a single parent, the pain of loneliness, and more. I’ve had my share of sickness, and heartbreak of losing loved ones. I’ve been wounded beside the road, bruised, knocked down, shot at, cursed out, and falsely accused. I would have some mountaintop experiences and then things happened that brought me crashing to the ground. I’ve had my seasons with the darkness of depression. I’ve stood silently by and watched others prosper and gain recognition while I floundered in hopeless circumstances. All of these trials caused me to turn to my Lord in prayer, search the scriptures, and humbled me down to recognize without Him, I am nothing. I know that my Redeemer lives, and that he loves and cares for me.

Many times I would read about the Apostle Paul and some of the things he had suffered. I read how the Lord delivered him and was with him. One of my favorite scriptures is Acts Chapter 27 verse 20 “And when neither sun nor stars in many days appeared, and no small tempest lay on us, all hope that we should be saved was then taken away.” During some of my deepest trials, I would feel this way. Then I read verse 25, “Wherefore, sirs, be of good cheer: for I believe God, that it shall be even as it was told to me.” Paul had prayed, and the Lord promised deliverance, and it came to pass.

The Lord has graciously given me a gift of writing so I could share with others the great things he has done in my life. Jesus suffered many things, Paul suffered many things, and others have too. These sufferings draw us closer to our Savior, and makes us realize that God is in control of the affairs of men. The Lord has delivered me from many trials, rescued me when I was about to sink, provided for me in miraculous ways, and answered many, many prayers. He allowed me to write a book, My Walk with the Lord, that records testimonies of how he has worked in my life. I have learned, beyond a shadow of doubt, even if I did not understand, that the Lord has a time and a purpose for everything under heaven.

Are your hopes crushed? Is your world falling apart? Are you in circumstances beyond your control? Look to Jesus, the author and finisher of your faith. He will never leave you nor forsake you.

Jeremiah 29 verses 12 and 13 “Then shall ye call upon me, and ye shall go and pray unto me, and I will hearken unto you. And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye search for me with all your heart.”
