How to Have the “Perfect” Christmas

“This year will be different. I vow I won’t get stressed out
over presents, parties, cards, Christmas plays, putting up the
tree and decorating, and all the many other tasks of the season.
I will remember the true meaning of Christmas.”

Do you find that all the Christmas chores steal your joy?

“For unto us a child is born” - Aahh the miracle of birth. The
true miracle of our Savior’s birth. As Christian mothers we are
doubly blessed to celebrate Christmas. We know the joy and pain
of childbirth. We can imagine an exhausted Mary looking at her
truly perfect, holy baby.

How can we recapture the joy and the simplicity of the first
Christmas?

Following are some suggestions for making this the “Perfect”
Christmas

1.Decide how you want your family to experience the true meaning
of Christmas. Ex. Will you help another family with presents?
Our family now has a tradition of doing Christmas boxes for
Samaritan’s Purse. Our children love picking out items for the
box and praying for the child who receives their box.

2.Prioritize what is most important to you. Maybe you can’t do
it all. You may choose not to send Christmas cards, but do a New
Years note.

3.Decide what parties you can and cannot attend. Sometimes as a
family we may rarely be home in December. So much for family
time.

4.If you have young children, remember how important, normal
routine and sleep schedule are for younger children and you.
Taking a cranky toddler shopping is not a good experience for
anyone.

5.Decide what traditions you want for your own nuclear family.
Sometimes we are so busy going to extended families’ homes we
don’t get to start our own family traditions. Try to have a
leisurely Christmas morning with children enjoying their toys
before rushing off to anywhere.

6.Start a tradition of celebrating Jesus birthday. Ex. Happy
Birthday Jesus cake, reading the Christmas story before opening
presents, or children having their own child size Nativity set
to play with and tell the Christmas story.

7.Set a limit on Christmas spending and stick to it. Don’t
celebrate Jesus’ birth by being in debt in January.

8.Take time to pray and think about the most precious gift of
all. Often our quiet times are the first to go when we get so
busy. Using an advent calendar with children will also help them
focus on the true meaning of Christmas.

9.Be kind to yourself. You may not be able to do everything like
your Mom did. Perhaps you can make slice-and-bake cookies with
your children instead of homemade cookie dough. Your children
will remember the fun of decorating cookies, not who made the
cookie dough.

10.Remember that you are not superwoman and you can’t do it all.
Sit down with your husband and decide who can do what on your
list. Children can help put stamps on Christmas cards. Be kind
to yourself and rest in our Savior’s loving arms.

I don’t know if you or I will have the “Perfect” Christmas, but
we can make a conscious effort to focus on our Lord. Things will
go wrong and we will get stressed, but we need to keep our eyes
on Him. We need to show and teach our children that Christmas is
not about Santa and receiving gifts. Christmas is about the
ultimate gift that we can never repay.

So, I wish you a “Perfect” Christmas with Christ’ birth as your
focus, and that you would be kind to yourself. Set reasonable
expectations for yourself and experience the true joy of
Christmas.

The Devils Lawyer

Matthew 22:35-22:46 The Devils Lawyer, The Sanctity of Marriage God declares that marriage is between man and woman, but Satan has gotten a lawyer to fight in his corner. See what God has to say.

Can we find any where in Scripture that God allowed man to marry man, or woman to marry woman? God declared that the union between same sex couples, was an abomination, and that they would find their place in the lake of fire, even men who possess the traits of a woman will not enter into the Gates of Heaven. The thing that this world is allowing is not an alternative life stile but an abdominal sin. The beginning of the race toward Armageddon.
The phrase alternative lifestyle was developed by Satan to assist those that wouldn’t obey Gods law of marriage and union between man and woman. We’ve got the court system in Massachutes and the ACLU, fighting for the rights of men and women to sin. According to Jesus, these things would happen in the end days, ” As it was in the Days of Noah, so shall it be in the second coming of the son of man, They will be marrying and giving in marriage..”

The lawyers in Jesus times were also trying Him and tempting Him, scripture used in this sermon will come from Matthew 22;35-46, Hebrews 13;4, and Luke 7;30-35. Why do we as Christians have to tolerate sin, we don’t have to. If we do not tell others what sin is, then how can they know, what to avoid? Satan’s lawyer tells the people, “Hey just tolerate them, it will be OK. No one will join them, no one will think twice about it.” Lies, lies, that’s all you hear from Satan. You may think it going on somewhere else, no body in our town will do such a thing. You tell yourself that, were a Christian community and a thing like that only accrues in the big cities. Be not deceived, it’s going on in your very neighborhood. We are not told by God or Scripture to be tolerant of sin, just the opposite.

Yes we are to stay out of the affairs of other men, but we are to speak out for Jesus and righteousness. We have a voice, we can cry out to God for the words to speak and He will answer. What are the results of same sex marriage? Desiese of mind and body. Aids, this is a sexual desiese that kills, not only the fornicators themselves, but they are a danger to, medical personnel that try to treat them, also a danger to anyone that comes into contact with their blood. And what about the spread of homo-sexuality, if they marry, which is just a loose term, the next thing they want, is to be able to adopt, children to raise, in their life style, which propagates the sin to generations to come.

There will be no end to it, and we all race toward Armageddon as fast as our feet will carry us. Satan’s lawyer wants you to be passive and tolerant to this sin and then to all others. “Give no place to the devil.” This is scripture and a commandment from Jesus. The church is to be a light to the world, but how can we shine forth if we are looking away from the sin that will so easily beset us?
Where are we going to run, where are we going to hide, who will we turn too? Jesus. Satan has His lawyer, but we have an Advocate, The Lord Jesus Christ, that talks directly to The God of Heaven, the Judge of all Mankind. Our protector, our source and supply. We should be Glorifying God; we should be praising Him, for the sins of this world will not be placed on our account. Was Jesus afraid to speak out, was Jesus afraid what people would think of Him, was Jesus concerned with being passive or tolerant of Sin? No, and we shouldn’t either, we are supposed to be Christ Like, made in the Image and likeness of the almighty God.

With the spirit of Him that gave His life for us. We as Christians cant de-nigh, the spirit of Christ, its who we are, we have passed from death into life, we have gone from sinners to saints, we have been translated from darkness into the kingdom of our Lord and Savior. We have gone from filthy rags of righteousness that we were accustomed too, to the white clothing of Gods Righteousness. Where by we are able now to inter into the kingdom of heaven.

I believe that you’ve heard the sermon, The Devils Bishop, and Lord willing He will give me the next sermon on The Devils Doctors. Why do I want to bring these to you, because God developed Government and the society we live in, and as God has His governmental system, we must understand the system that Satan has also set up. Jesus spoke about it to the Sadducees and Pharisees, “…. And if Satan cast out Satan, then how could his kingdom stand, no house divided among itself cannot stand..”

You have to know these things, you have to be informed, you have to be aware, so that you can stand firm in the day of trial, when the devils lawyer takes the floor. 1Ti 5:20 Them that sin rebuke before all, that others also may fear. Rom 3:18 There is no fear of God before their eyes. 1Th 5:14 Now we exhort you, brethren, warn them that are unruly, comfort the feebleminded, support the weak, be patient toward all men.

The 70 Weeks of Daniel

Understanding Daniel’s 70 Weeks

Scholars generally agree that each of the seventy weeks represent seven prophetical years.
The seventy weeks are divided into three sections, seven weeks, sixty-two weeks and one week. The first seven weeks are added to the sixty-two, bringing the total to sixty-nine weeks. This would bring us up to the time of Christ. This marks the closing era or last days of Israel evoking the statement from Jesus, “The time is fulfilled…the kingdom of God has drawn near, (Mark 1:14, 15).

Daniel predicts Jesus’ violent crucifixion saying that the Messiah is cut off, that is crucified, after the sixty-ninth week. There can be no mistake therefore that Jesus was crucified in the last or seventieth week of Daniel’s prophecy.

Since Christ was cutoff after sixty-two weeks and because these followed the first seven weeks, then it is clear that Jesus was crucified after “sixty-nine” weeks or in the last, final or seventieth week. Some like to place a 2000 year time-gap between the sixty-ninth and seventieth weeks of Daniel. To do so would violently upset God’s prophetical scheme for the crucifixion of Christ. It would place Jesus’ crucifixion in our future. Thomas Ice and Tim LaHaye have done this very thing with their “gap-theory on Daniel 9:25, 26. See The End Times Controversy, page 341.

Daniel’s seventy weeks mark out the time of Jesus crucifixion and his return in judgment upon the nation of Israel. There is no gap between the sixty-ninth and seventieth weeks. It is a clear testimony that the time of the end has come and gone.

The Pope Hates Potter - Both of Them

This month a court in Burlington, Kentucky issued the largest settlement to date against the Catholic Church in the “Priestofeelya” scandal.

Judge John Potter ruled in favor of the victims against the church to the tune of $120 million dollars (place pinky to corner of mouth.)

On such an infamous and history making day, there was little doubt the Vatican would issue a statement. That’s why no one was particularly surprised when Pope Benedict came out using the strongest language from the Vatican in some time denouncing Potter.

Harry Potter.

OK, in his defense, the guy with the Big White Hat is rather aged. Already beat the “three score and ten” often quoted from the Psalms. Possibly he meant to denounce JOHN Potter and simply had a senior moment. Certainly the Vatican did not allow this precedent setting commentary on their policies go without comment.

I guess the “Holy See” just doesn’t “see” it. (Clever pun quota met for today.)

According to Ratzinger, reading about some four-eyed-son-of-a-witch is much more harmful than a confessional fondling by Father Nutsinhander. Surely these youngsters were asking to be fondled, what with their bambi-like eyes, impish naiveté and round buttocks, playfully hidden beneath the folds of an alter-boy dress.

What sexually repressed, hard on in a penguin suit could resist asking them to visit his Rectory?

Catholics should begin addressing the real source of the sexual abuse scandal—stop reporting abuse. It worked for 50 years, it will work for 50 more.

Are you facing some challenges in your life?”

Are you facing some challenges in your life right now? If so, rejoice! “Count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. Let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing.” (James 1:2-4)

We all know that athletes need endurance training for physical stamina and mental toughness. When game time arrives, he or she will be ready to do battle and will have a greater chance at victory. If the athlete does not go through the necessary preparedness, he or she may not even be allowed into the game.

Do we really think we can just ask God for some great position in life with out any preparation? Not hardly. Read Psalm 107. This chapter tells us that God sometimes brings storms into our lives to accomplish a purpose in us. And that purpose, I believe, is to prepare us for greater things.

If you’re facing challenges today, ask God to hold you up, strengthen you, and help you learn what He is trying to teach you. “Blessed is He who endures.” (James 1:12)

Please keep in mind that not all storms in our lives are from God. Many times, we can create our own storms by making poor decisions. The best thing to do in these cases is to ask God to help you learn from your mistakes.

God can use your own storms to teach you things and use them to bring you increase. “All things work together for good to them who love the Lord and are called according to His purpose.” (Romans 8:28)

Be encouraged if things are not what you think they should be. God has a wonderful plan for your life and He may just be working on the inside of you right now. God is faithful to His word! Remember, “The desire of the righteous shall be granted.” (Proverbs 10:24)

God’s Supernatural Miracle of Healing Infertility

In 2002, while taking a break at work, I found myself in the
middle of a discussion about abortion. There were about five
women joining in the discussion.

A few of the ladies were pro-choice; the others (including
myself) were pro-life. One of the women in particular (I won’t
use her real name, but I’ll call her Nicole) was extremely
pro-choice.

Nicole voiced her opinion about pro-choice with fervency in
attempts to convince everyone- abortion is a woman’s right. She
explained to everyone how women must have the right to choose
what they do with their own bodies. I was about six months
pregnant with my third daughter at the time, so of course, I
disagreed with Nicole. I told her I thought abortion was wrong.
Still, Nicole made the arguments about women who are raped or
women who couldn’t afford to take care of a child. I considered
Nicole one of my closest friends, so I finally gave up and
stopped arguing with her. I was surprised to hear her views on
abortion though.

Three months later, when it was time for my baby to be born,
there was a tragic accident. My baby was entangled in the
umbilical cord and delivered as a stillborn.

A few days later, we had her funeral at my church. Several
people attended the funeral including a police chaplain, three
pastors, teachers from my other daughters’ school, many old
friends, relatives, and several people from work. I think Nicole
had to work that day, because she wasn’t there.

Returning to work about a month later, (I took off work about a
month to recover from the loss) I saw Nicole again. At break
time, Nicole and I went outside (even though it was cold and
rainy) to “talk”. I relived the events of my baby’s death for
her by explaining the details. When Nicole heard the story of my
heartbreak, she opened up with tears, and confessed she once had
an abortion when she was seventeen years old. When I asked why,
she said, “When my mother found out I was pregnant, she said
-Nicole, You Are Not Going To Keep That Baby”. Because Nicole
was living with her mother at the time, she submitted to her
mother and went to a clinic to have the abortion.

Nicole then told me doctors had advised her since her abortion,
she would never be able to have another child. The abortion had
permanently damaged her body.

Nicole was now twenty-seven years old and wanted a child, but
knew in her heart it was impossible. I tried to encourage her,
prayed for her and advised her to seek God.

About three months later, upon arrival to work, I noticed Nicole
wasn’t there. I asked some of the women if they knew where she
was. To my astonishment, the women (who were noticeably excited)
informed me Nicole had called into work. They said she had just
found out she was pregnant. They also said she was rejoicing and
giving praises to God, but at the same time experiencing some
morning sickness.

Overjoyed, I remembered Nicole pouring her heart out to me that
cold day during her confession. I believe God heard her
confession that day, gave her forgiveness and healed her body
all at the same time. When the due date arrived, Nicole gave
birth to a healthy baby boy.

Nicole’s story reminds me of the scripture from 1 John 1:8-9
that says, “If we claim to be without sin we deceive ourselves
and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, He is
faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us
from all unrighteousness.”

God’s Broken Promise

One of the common claims by young earth creationists is that if
Noah’s Flood were a local flood, then God has broken his promise
many times. According to The Answers Book, chapter 10,

“If the Flood were local, God would have repeatedly broken His
promise never to send such a Flood again. There have been huge
‘local’ floods in recent times: in Bangladesh, for example,
where 80% of that country has been inundated, or Europe in
2002.”(Footnote 1)

Is there any truth to this claim? Do the local floods we see
today constitute a breaking of the covenant God made with Noah?
First, let’s read the covenant in Genesis 9:8-15.

8 Then God spoke to Noah and to his sons with him, saying, 9
“Now behold, I Myself do establish My covenant with you, and
with your descendants after you; 10 and with every living
creature that is with you, the birds, the cattle, and every
beast of the earth with you; of all that comes out of the ark,
even every beast of the earth. 11 And I establish My covenant
with you; and all flesh shall never again be shut off by the
water of the flood, neither shall there again be a flood to
destroy the earth.” 12 And God said, “This is the sign of the
covenant which I am making between Me and you and every living
creature that is with you, for all successive generations; 13 I
set My bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a sign of a
covenant between Me and the earth. 14 And it shall come about,
when I bring a cloud over the earth, that the bow shall be seen
in the cloud, 15 and I will remember My covenant, which is
between Me and you and every living creature of all flesh; and
never again shall the water become a flood to destroy all
flesh.” To answer this question, one must look at exactly what
the covenant says. First, who is the covenant with? This is
contained in verses 9-10. Clearly, it was made with Noah and his
sons, and their descendents. It was also made with every living
creature that is with Noah. At the end of verse 10, God extends
it to “even every beast of the earth.” There is no question who
the covenant is with, however it is interesting that God makes a
distinction between the living creatures with Noah (with every
living creature that is with you), and the rest of the creatures
(even every beast of the earth). Why would God make this
distinction? If all the animals were killed, and Noah had all
the survivors on the ark, then it was useless to extend the
covenant beyond the ark’s inhabitants. This indicates that the
flood was local, and there were animal populations outside of
the inhabitants of the ark. If every living thing were on the
ark, the term “even every beast of the earth” gives no
additional meaning to the text.

But what is the exact covenant? This is in verses 11 and 15.

11 “And I establish My covenant with you; and all flesh shall
never again be shut off by the water of the flood, neither shall
there again be a flood to destroy the earth.” 15 “and I will
remember My covenant, which is between Me and you and every
living creature of all flesh; and never again shall the water
become a flood to destroy all flesh.”

The key term to examine is “all flesh.” What is the meaning of
this term? This is tied to the beginning of the ark story, where
God stated the purpose of the Flood.

Morris and Whitcomb in their book, The Genesis Flood, (Footnote
2) say the purpose of the flood was to destroy both man, beast,
creeping things, and birds. The key is in Genesis 6:12:

And God looked upon the earth, and, behold, it was corrupt; for
all flesh had corrupted his way upon the earth. (KJV)

The purpose of the flood was to wipe out this corruption. The
main meaning for the Hebrew word for flesh in the Flood
chapters, bâsâr, is person or man. The Hebrew dictionary doesn’t
even make it possible to extend this to animal flesh. God is not
talking about the corruption of the animal kingdom, but about
man’s corruption. This is corrected in some other translations
(NIV=”people”; Amplified=”humanity”). The purpose of the flood
was to wipe out man, not animals. Yes, animals in the flooded
locations would be killed, but they are not the target of God.

The main point of the covenant is that man shall never again be
wiped from the face of the earth. Local floods since the time of
Noah have never wiped man from the face of the earth. Yes, many
have been killed, but never to the scale of Noah’s Flood, where
only eight people were left alive.

When local floods occur today, they come nowhere close to wiping
out humanity. The Answers Book lists the Bangladesh floods,
where thousands have died. Yet there are billions of people
still on planet earth after those floods. Clearly this does not
compare with Noah’s Flood, where more than 99 percent of mankind
was wiped out. Even the Tsunami of 2004, which killed hundreds
of thousands, cannot compare to Noah’s Flood.

In local floods today, less than 1/100th of one percent of the
worlds populations are killed. In Noah’s flood, almost 100
percent of mankind was killed. There is no comparison.

God extends his covenant to the creatures of the earth as well,
saying that they would also be spared from floods of the
magnitude of Noah’s Flood. Yes, animals are killed when local
floods occur, but they do not come close to the magnitude of
Noah’s Flood, where an entire species was almost wiped out
(humankind, except for Noah’s family).

The only other term to consider is “neither shall there again be
a flood to destroy the earth.” We cannot know the extent of
Noah’s Flood geographically…we can only assume that it covered
all the lands inhabited by humans at the time. Although local
floods do harm the earth, it is a safe assumption that the
extent of Noah’s Flood has not been repeated. It may also be
important to note that the Hebrew word for earth, ‘erets, also
means land in general, such as a field, or nations, or even
“ground”.

Conclusion

Clearly, God has not flooded the earth in the same way he did
during Noah’s time, with the same impact. God has not broken His
promise. Mankind has never been wiped from the face of the earth
again. This claim made by young earth creationists has no basis
in fact.

Surviving an American Church Split

In his book entitled “Exit Interviews,” William D. Hendricks writes something astonishing: “Almost all growth reported by North American churches today is the result of church switching and birthrate within the churches rather than conversion growth.”

He’s referring to transfer growth rather than new converts. In other words, it’s easier to go to a restaurant and order baked fish than to catch and clean our own.

Over 3800 American churches close their doors annually throughout the USA. The reasons for these closures run the gamut: real or perceived pastoral incompetency, strife, infidelity in leadership marriages, lack of financial integrity, doctrinal discrepancies, power struggles, persecution, congregational distrust or dissatisfaction (only 43% of Christians surveyed say they fully trust their church), choosing sides on any issue, and more. It’s no secret that church splits inflict damage upon the army of God. Things like divorce, death or sickness of a beloved leader, job transfers, college relocation, military reassignment and the like, wreak havoc upon the rank and file Believer. All of these situations leave the average Christian scratching his or her head in bewilderment as their brothers and sisters in Christ leave their fellowship, never to return.

Is it a “bad” thing for the members of a church congregation to scatter like this? At first glance, yes. But it depends on one’s perspective. Sure, it hurts, causing great emotional pain. Though it’s true, in accordance with Scripture, that if one smites the shepherd, the sheep will scatter, the “scattering of the sheep” has been happening since the early days of the church, often without any shepherd-smiting at all. Whether it was through the influential confusion brought upon the Church by the Judaizers (Galatians 1:7; 2:14; 3:1) or the persecution and subsequent scattering of the Church at the hands of the Romans under Nero’s reign during which Peter was martyred, God was never left wringing His hands, anxiously trying to figure out what His next move was going to be. The Jewish-Roman wars of A.D. 66-70 also contributed to the scattering of the saints.

For the first two centuries of the Church, the Apostle Paul and others journeyed forth across the known world to spread the Gospel. As a result of previous scatterings, while remaining true to their faith in Christ, scattered believers had been divinely positioned, ready to receive these traveling evangelists into their homes and give them provisions for their journey as they went forth preaching the Gospel and as the Kingdom of God continued to advance. Again, notice how the Church had been strategically placed, through persecution, to disciple new converts as they came into being. These people would not have been there to receive the evangelists, had they not been scattered by persecution or any other outside influence that had caused their once-cozy groups to split up. God is always in control.

WHAT MAKES A CHURCH SPLIT A BAD THING?
For starters, there’s the shipwrecked faith of the weaker Christians that so often occurs. Sadly, many Christians will abandon the faith altogether in the face of a Church split, disillusioned as they observe those whom they saw as “solid” Christian leaders suddenly picking up stakes and walking out the door. For anyone with shallow roots, Satan can use a church split to spiritually destroy the most vulnerable. For babes in Christ, seeing the world through rose-colored eyes, nothing on Earth can compare to the sweet fellowship from which they’ve found nourishment. Suddenly, boundaries become obscured. Friends become enemies. Brothers become adversaries. And another church-attender goes down with the ship.

Another unfortunate result of a church split is that most of those in pastoral roles will, statistically, never return to full-time pastoral ministry after they lose a church or are uncerimoniously drummed out of the corps. In fact, though they still maintain a relationship with God, the statistics are alarmingly high regarding those ministers who never even join another congregation, much less pastor another flock. Even in these instances, however, it is becoming more and more common to discover licensed and ordained ministers working in our midst as salesmen, floor managers, telemarketers, etc. Once again, God’s people have been strategically positioned to shine the light of Christ into the darkened life of their coworkers - those who spend more time at work than they do at home - and the Faith at Work Movement is spreading like wildfire. No one leaves their problems at home. A battered wife is still a battered wife at the office. A dad whose daughter turned up pregnant still has a broken heart while managing his crew. I served for 5 years as a workplace chaplain myself and found that ministry quite fulfilling and appreciated by the staff.

WHAT GOOD CAN COME OF A CHURCH SPLIT?
To answer this, we must first recognize that God is more concerned with our individual character than He is in our comfort. Satan and God have one thing in common, friends… they’re BOTH trying to kill us. That’s right. The only good Christian is a dead one! We MUST decrease in order for Jesus to INCREASE. In other words, the world must see more of HIM shining through our lives than they see of US. We have NOTHING to offer that matters in light of eternity besides He Who lives in us, the Spirit of God.

So, what are we made of? How strong are our Christian marriages? How strong is our church? How strong is the sweet fellowship of the saints? Rest assured, the dreaded “rub” will come. Everything WILL be tested. It MUST be tested. Tried by fire. The REFINER’S fire; the fire that causes the dross to rise to the top as the silver is purified, allowing the silversmith to see His own reflection in the product, testifying to its readiness for use. See, the Lord only builds with fireproof materials. As the hay, wood and stubble are burned into ashes, once the smoke clears, stone and silver are all that remain. So, burn, baby, burn! Jesus was tested and we will be, too.

That Christian who stands praying while his beloved church is crumbling, and remains faithful to the Kingdom of God REGARDLESS of what happens to a building made of brick and mortar, has received the highest order of strength, straight from the foundries of Heaven. It’s the grace of God. When unjust persecution comes, when unjustified crucifixion becomes our lot, we can call upon this grace to empower us so that we may remain true to the cause of our Christ, regardless of circumstances. Only the Spirit of God can keep us on course. We can not live vicariously through our godly, spirit-filled ministers. Our Christianity cannot be typified by our worship style, preacher’s gifting, size of assembly, cost of the sanctuary, or the scope of our pastor’s TV ministry. We must resist the deceptive thinking that God is so enthralled with our particular church group and its exciting ministries that He no longer sees us as individuals.

Part 2
HAVE IT GOD’S WAY
God says a really strange thing in Exodus 23:38. He states that He will drive out the enemies of Israel by sending hornets. In other words, God would arrange it so that the Israelites would not even have to fire a shot – their enemies would be “bugged” to death. Imagine an army of hornets, lined up, stingers at the ready, awaiting the directive of Earth’s Supreme Commander and Creator to drive out Israel’s enemies. Just crazy enough to work! But it’s an order that never came. Unfortunately, for the Israelites, it seemed too simple an answer to too big of a problem. So, in all their wisdom, they chose to fight their own battles rather than trusting in the same God that had delivered them from Egypt using flies, frogs, and then fed them with manna from Heaven and quail every night. The result? Nearly forty years later, it was their children, not they themselves, who would enter the Promised Land.

The point? God’s ways are not our ways. They’re much HIGHER than ours. Victory can be ours only when the battle is the Lord’s. He will share His glory with no man. In the midst of the pain and suffering inflicted upon one’s soul during a church split, imagine a seemingly silly thing like prayer serving as a balm for the soul. Yes! Pray for those who are siding against you! No one can hate the one they’re praying for – no more than we can despise a garden over which we might toil. We’ll chase away the rodents, we’ll water and weed and, ultimately, rejoice as the field bears fruit. But we can never hate that over which we toil in prayer. God is able to cause our greatest enemies to be at peace with us.

THIS IS A TEST!
Beware. The day of crisis is coming to your congregation or denominational camp. It HAS to. The thing MUST be tested by fire. When discord and backbiting, divorce and disharmony abound, how will we conduct ourselves? Amazingly, in my experience with church splits, I’ve noticed that both sides feel quite justified in pulling out the sacred Word of God and using it to bludgeon one another. The Scripture, intended to bring Life, now yields only death among the saints at the hands of all out civil war. Which group’s convictions are from the Lord? When is an issue important enough to abandon all attempts at unity and reconciliation? There was never any greater act of injustice than that which took place on Calvary, the day of our Savior’s crucifixion. Peter didn’t speak out against it. He wasn’t the only disciple not to utter a word in protest. Jesus was led “as a lamb to slaughter” and did not even attempt to defend Himself. Even God turned His head as He could not even look upon Jesus, Who became sin personified on the cross for our sakes.

In light of this truth, what critical, all-important, “paramount” issues are we debating over in the midst of our own congregations right now? Folks, our commission is to “go and make disciples.” If our focus were upon that and ONLY that, living our lives in such a way before men that we might win some, functioning as epistles read by all, there wouldn’t be time, or the need, to lobby and legislate against sin by political means. We wouldn’t have the energy to debate the color of the carpet. We’re supposed to be making the world jealous for what we’ve found in Jesus. Instead, we’ve allowed ourselves to be transformed from a counter-culture to merely another sub-culture with a political agenda, quoting verses at a world that doesn’t even acknowledge the Book from which those verses came.

They see our disharmony and they are NOT impressed.

GOING OUT OF BUSINESS, OR DIVINE CLOSURE?
Many years ago, in Fort Worth, Texas, I had the privilege of experiencing an official, God-ordained, church closing. In this situation, the pastor testified to receiving a vision from God while out of town at the same time the church leadership team was having dreams and confirmations, all pointing to the fact that God was instructing them to shut down their church. Both parties confirmed the testimony of the other that God was leading them to forever close their doors. Why was God leading these people to do such a thing? The people were happy, they were reaching their neighborhood, they loved each other and had a good thing going. What could have been the reason? Quite simply, the Lord had new work for each of its members to attend to.

The “closure” service was held in the presence of several other churches with whom this particular group had been relating to for some time, including the team on which I had served. Many people were eventually absorbed into these loving churches with which they had established a relationship. The pastor spoke; the other leaders, too. One elder told of how God enabled them to become debt-free in a very short period of time and even give their long-time, faithful secretary some severance money over and above her final check. Members of the congregation performed a one-act play, each actor displaying one of the many emotions that were surely being felt by the church’s soon-to-be former congregants.

Strangely, the number one comment I heard from the moist-eyed attendants was “I wonder how many OTHER churches should have closed their doors years ago?” Frankly, I wondered that myself.

Ironically, though I left the church I helped establish while it was in its seventh year to follow the call of God to my current home town, two years later, in its ninth year, on Easter Sunday, that church, too, had a closure service of its own.

Though many people from my own prior congregation have scattered, the fact is, as the lovely faces of scores of people flash through my mind, to my knowledge, nothing but good has come of these closings. I speak with many of them via email and telephone and I’m delighted by the praise reports I’ve heard. Interestingly, the financial blessing that has occurred in many of their lives has been the most obvious good to come of it.

WHOSE KINGDOM IS IT ANYWAY?
Folks, this thing we call Christianity is all about Jesus Christ. He alone is all anybody really needs, whether they know it or not. We can quote Scriptures till our halo burns out, argue and Scripture-whip the unbeliever silly. It’s futile for we cannot intellectualize a person into salvation.

If lost people need Jesus and Him only, guess what the Christian needs? Guess what the church needs? You guessed it…. CHRIST! And nothing else will satisfy. Not even a new carpet or re-striping the parking lot.

Jesus is faithful to complete what He began. He will never leave or forsake us. He didn’t come to establish a denomination or build a cathedral. He created this thing we call “The Church,” the ekklesia in Greek (meaning “called out ones”). As with creation in general, Jesus created it and He holds it all together.

Here’s a newsflash: No matter how overwhelming your personal or corporate church circumstances may appear to be, they’re going to get worse.

You read that correctly.

As we grow in our relationship with Christ and He increases in us, He also increases the scope of His dealings with us. Again, it’s character, not comfort that God desires for His kids. He wants to conform us to the image of His Son and nothing burns away human flesh like a baptism by holy fire.

When the seas of turmoil and confusion begin to swirl uncontrollably within your church, forget about digging into your church leadership’s bag o’ tricks. Instead, find your true north. We must determine how Jesus would have handled the matter (in a word, “crucifixion”), and do likewise. Here’s the battle plan: 1) love unconditionally everything with a pulse 2) relentlessly forgive, right and left, preferring others to ourselves 3) with wreckless abandon, empathize with others and strive for unity, and 4) focus entirely on Jesus, the Way, as the sole solution.

Find out what the opposition needs… and GIVE it to them! Go exceedingly beyond what they could have ever expected you to do. Then, hide and watch.

What God does next will amaze everyone concerned.

Part 3
CHURCH WARS: A KINGDOM DIVIDED
There are many reasons why church wars begin. Though there are times that the issues may be critical and involve the spiritual integrity of the church., generally, we choose sides over very insignificant issues.

For example, I’ve been told there is a church down South with a roof that’s green on one side and red on the other. This was done because some members of the church adamantly wanted green and other members adamantly wanted red. The disagreement was so intense that the church was going to split because of it. Finally, a compromise was reached. Unfortunately, the red and green roof is a monument to the community of the kind of silly disjointedness they might find if they become a part of the Body of Christ.

In relationships, whenever we see “the other side” as the problem, we’ve been deceived. People are never the problem. The PROBLEM is the problem. We attack each other when we should join forces in attacking the problem. Likewise, church problems are NOT the Church’s real problem. They are a symptom of a much deeper problem. The color of the shingles was not the issue tearing the church apart. Yes, it may have been the issue that caused the friction, but the church had other issues that needed to be addressed, and probably still does. Yet, in our desire to choose the path of least resistance, we opt for putting band-aids on that which requires major surgery. In essence, we prolong the agony of the inevitable. Usually, the underlining problems are very complex and have been in development for generations.

A congregation experiencing significant problems over “superficial” issues should seek outside, objective help. This is where the role of a church-planting apostle can be invaluable. If this is not part of your denomination’s organizational make-up, a trusted senior leader may serve just as well. Sadly, just as some struggling married couples are reluctant to seek help, most churches function in the same way. They see a request for outside help is an admission that they can’t handle their own problems. They see it as a sign of weakness rather than a potential position of empowerment. A church pastor or leadership team believes they should be about the business of helping others and don’t want to admit that they need help themselves. The sad reality is that, by NOT seeking help, those they thought they were helping may be hurt beyond repair as the result of a church split.

Though I pray God’s grace upon you should you ever face the ugliness of a church split, the reality is that most Christians will have this experience at least once. Whether you define “church” as the steepled building or whether yours is of the cozy “home group” variety, where humans are concerned, disagreements are bound to erupt. They’ll know we are Christians – not merely church-attenders- by our love for one another. When we who have the Bible and the Holy Spirit as our Guide and Teacher openly display to our community that we are unable to get along, what hope can we offer to the world? We must make them jealous for what we’ve supposedly discovered through our relationship with God through Jesus Christ.

Otherwise, the Church shall remain the #1 cause of atheism on planet Earth.

What is your PROBLEM? There Must Be 50 Ways to…”

“What is your problem?” Have you ever gotten exasperated and asked someone that in “that” tone of voice?

Mary: “I want to move near my grandchildren, but how on earth will I move myself up there alone?”
You: “Just call a moving company. What is your PROBLEM?”

Abby: “I hate being an entrepreneur, but you have no idea how hard it is to get back into a corporation with all the downsizing.
You: “Just call a career coach. What is your PROBLEM?”

Millicent: “I ought to get a raise, but how on earth do I ask him for one?”
You: “Just ask. What is your PROBLEM?”

Antonio: “How on earth do I tell my wife I’m in love with another woman?”
You: “Just tell her. What is your PROBLEM?”

Liu: “I hate this house. I hate it.”
You: You’ve been saying that for 3 years now. What is your PROBLEM?”

What is the PROBLEM when the solution is so EASY?

++Easy to us who are on the outside.
++Easy to us who are not emotionally involved and can therefore be objective
++Easy for us who are not hamstrung by ambivalence (indecision) and can think clearly
++Easy for us because we can think logically, and the steps are obvious IF the decision has been made AND there are no emotions involved.

How do you ask for a raise? Gosh, there must be 50 ways to ask for a raise.

Remember that great old song by Paul Simon, “There Must Be 50 Ways to Leave Your Lover”?

He’s talking with a woman …

”The problem is all inside your head,” she tells him. “The answer is easy if you take it logically. I’d like to help you with your struggle to be free. There must be 50 ways to leave your lover.”

When we’re in an emotional situation, we can be “flooded” and unable to think clearly. We get “hijacked.” How do you ask for a raise? You ask for a raise. And it can really get painful to be hung up that way.

“It grieves me so to see you in such pain,” she continues in the song. “I wish there was something I could do to make you smile again.”

He says he appreciates that, “and would you please explain about the 50 ways?”

Slip out the back, Jack
Make a new plan, Stan
You don’t need to be coy, Roy
Just listen to me.

Hop on the bus, Gus
You don’t need to discuss much
Just drop off the key, Lee
And get yourself free.

And then she has a good idea. “Why don’t we just sleep on it tonight,” she says, and then she kisses him, and he “realized she probably was right … there must be 50 ways to leave your lover.”

Smart girl! She didn’t have a PROBLEM figuring out how to get what she wanted.

Emotions motivate us. We will sit on the fence until the pain gets too bad in one direction, or the expected pleasure too great in the other direction.

And when we get the feelings that motivate us, we discover there must be 50 ways to …

As the poet said, “Kisses are a better fate than wisdom.” Emotions are our guides. That’s what Emotional Intelligence is all about.

Praying Effectively – Understanding How To Pray Part 2

In our last study, we looked at understanding prayer. In this study we will be focusing on how to pray effectively.

Effective prayer is a goal that most Christians aim for in their daily life, and unfortunately this is a goal that few reach. Why would prayer be so hard to achieve, and to get results on a daily bases? The problem lies in our approach to prayer. For many of us, we have been taught that to pray we must “beg and plead” with God, and just maybe He will move on our behalf. I have also seen people think that they are exactly where God wants them, so they just pray “Lord if it be thy will” like that will do the trick for them, and what every results happen with that prayer then that is exactly what God would have them to do. Then you have my personal favorite kind of prayer, the “lets make a deal” prayer. We agree to do something for God, if He in return will do something for us. As a result of all these types of prayers, it’s no wonder why so many Christians have a very weak prayer life, and are defeated by Satan. So let us begin our study of how to pray effectively.

Fist let us take the time to see what the Bible says about prayer. Jesus said in
Mark 11:24
“Therefore I say to you, all things for which you pray and ask, believe that you have received them, and they will be granted you.”

Here is the interesting thing about this scripture, there is actually two things going on in this verse. First is “pray”, and the second is “ask”. At first this seems like the same thing.

Well first let’s see that the word “pray” means.

The Greek word is proseuchomai: to pray to God, supplicate, worship, and make prayer – Strong’s 4336 reference number.

What is unique about this word is that it is the primary word Jesus used when he was talking about pray in the Bible. The word in itself gives us the meaning of pray. It means to worship the Lord. But how does worship tie to prayer? Easy, the second part of the scripture finishes it for us.

To ask, this is the only thing most of us knows about prayer, is to ask, yet as you can see asking is only the second part of praying. So some would say now “O I get it; I just worship God and then ask. Then I will understand prayer.” I would say no. That’s not the point Jesus was trying to tell us about prayer. Let’s dig deeper into this.

We have exposed the first part of Mark 11:24, let’s look at the second part. Mark 11:24 “Therefore I say to you, all things for which you pray and ask, believe that you have received them, and they will be granted you.”

Here is the true key to effective prayer, Believe that you have received them, and they will be granted to you. Jesus has just giving us the key to prayer. Here again, we have a two parts. First is believe, and the second part is receive.

The Bible gives us many verses that tells us to believe, but for me the most compelling of them is Hebrews 11:6 “And without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him.”

We as believers must believe that God is a rewarder, not a condemner. Most believers just believe that God will do what he wants, yet the Bible tells us, that if we come to God, we must believe that God will reward those who seek Him. So there is faith in God that these prayers will be answered.

If faith is a part of prayer, we have to figure out how I can have faith in this problem or situation, which I have been asking God to move in. That is simple, Faith comes by hearing the word of God, and the Word of God will show you what God’s will is for that situation.

Romans 10:17 “So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”

We need start to basing our prayers on the Word of God, and not our feelings, nor our religious teachings, and then we will start to see results. We have only one part left and that is to understanding the receiving part.

James 1:5-8 “But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him. [6] But he must ask in faith without any doubting, for the one who doubts is like the surf of the sea, driven and tossed by the wind. [7] For that man ought not to expect that he will receive anything from the Lord, [8] being a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.”

It says very plainly that if a man will not believe that he received what he asked, then let that man expect not to receive anything from the Lord. That is very clear if you ask me. If you will not act as if you have already received what you have asked for then do not think that you will receive it from God. That is a major problem for most people, how do we ask as if we have received, when he have not received yet? That is where faith plays into it.

Hebrews 11:1 “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.”

Substance of things hoped for. What is substance? In the Greek it means “confident”, so we could read it as this, “Now faith is confidence of things hoped for. The confidence is the results of hearing the word of God. As you can see, that all this is starting to fall into place, and every part of the 4 parts are staring to work together. Now, on to the last part “the evidence of things not seen.” Again let’s look at “evidence” in the Greek to get the meaning of it. Evidence means “proof”. Let’s re-read this verse with our study definitions in place.

Now Faith is the confidence of things hoped for, the proof of things not seen. So in short, your confidence in God will result on your hearing of the Word of God. As you grow in the Word your Faith will grow as well, and that will bring confidence that God will do what He says He will do. You will be able to believe what you ask, and in doing so you will also be able to have proof through your faith, (the Proof will come through knowing the promises of God.) so you will not be a flip flopper and you will be in the right position and open to receive from God, for you will already be acting as if you have already received.

Now that we understand the second part of Mark 11:24, let’s return back to the first part.

Mark 11:24 “Therefore I say to you, all things for which you pray and ask, believe that you have received them, and they will be granted you.”

We have learned in this study, pray means to worship and that Jesus told us to pray and ask. How can these two things be together in what we call prayer?

Matthew 6:8 “So do not be like them; for your Father knows what you need before you ask Him. This verse is used by many as a means of just praying Gods will on everything. For if he knows what I need before I ask, then why bother studying the word of God, and applying my faith, if He knows then, just let him do it. That kind of thinking will get you no where fast with God. Yes God does know what you need before you ask, but that doesn’t mean you will get it. You have a role to play in this as well.”

To ask for something is our part; we need to know what the Bible says about our situation in order to be able to be in the right position to believe and receive from God. That’s not that hard to figure out, but how about the worship part for the pray part of Mark 11:24?

Here is the best part and I have saved it for last. When you go into prayer with God, He already knows what you need, right. So, the worship part is just thanking God for what he has done for you. Can you see it tie together? We come to God worshiping him and giving him thanks, for what He as already done for us. Prayer should be in the past tense. Let me give you an example. Prayer for healing: Father in the name of Jesus Christ, Lord I thank you that you are a God of healing. Lord your word says in 1 Peter 2:24 “and He Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross, so that we might die to sin and live to righteousness; for by His wounds you were healed.” Father I believe that you have done this in Jesus, and Lord that you have healed me through Jesus, and now Father I receive my healing of ( what ever ). Lord you said I was healed, and Father, I will not speak another word that is against what you have said I was. The Doctors might say it, my Family might say it, and my body might show signs of it, yet Lord you said I’m healed and I believe your report. Father I give you thanks. Lord I praise and worship you, and I give you glory for my victory. In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

Can you see how that prayer is in Past tense? The prayer was as if it was already done. In that prayer you worshiped God (pray), you asked (my healing) and you believed and received from God. All in the same matter as Mark 11:24.

Prayer is not a five minute thing, if you truly want to be effective in prayer, you will need to take time and study the word of God. I know this sounds funny, yet as Believers the Word of God is God’s Will for our life. We need to know what it says, and when we pray, we ask God to do what He said He would in the Word. But if we do not know the Word, we get all these different kinds of noise to God, trying to con God, trying to make a deal with God, and trying to just tell God “you handle it.” Well my friends those prayers will not work. You have to show your self approved in the Word.

What if you are new to Christ, well God is a loving God and he will meet you where you are. But even a new Christian will be reading his or her Bible. And God will be able to show you what you need for prayer. As always I pray that this study has and will continue to increase your personal relationship with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
