5 Keys to Effective Goal Setting - Successful Entrepreneur Mindset

Setting and achieving goals is where success happens! We often get stuck at the beginning of the process with assessing our situation and setting goals without following through to completion. Setting goals without achieving them equals failure.

Failure can be defined as simply missing the mark, not achieving goals set. If you don’t set any goals for yourself, you could say you have succeeded because you didn’t fail. That said (tongue in cheek!) we are striving animals. Setting and achieving goals is the mainstay of purposeful living. The successful entrepreneur mindset uses goal directed thinking in every aspect of designing and running a business.

Effective goal setting happens when we choose goals that we believe we can truly achieve. We keep those goals ever in front of us, never losing sight of where we want to go in life. The groundwork for effective goal setting starts with these crucial components.

Keys to Effective Goal Setting

#1 Have a Vision - Start with a fully detailed vision for yourself and your business. Without a vivid image of how your business will look in the future, you will not be able to set all of your daily, weekly and monthly goals that will propel your business beyond your imagination into Reality.

#2 Know your Passions - Often the problem with goals isn’t in setting them but being motivated to actually achieve the goals you’ve set up. Think about really gets you fired up. I’m not talking about simply your direct sales company or latest ebook but rather ~ what drives your dreams. Your passions need to be able to get behind your list of goals and fuel the fire that makes you ACT. Goal setting without action is what….simply a diversion from the actual “work” of making things happen.

#3 Be Brutally Honest - Setting goals means being honest with yourself and others. Living a life fully and achieving your goals requires complete honesty. Look deep inside yourself. Know your strengths and weaknesses. Don’t pretend to have skills or talents that simply exist within you. It is a major waste of your time and energy to strive to be someone else. Your vision, passion and gifts that exist within you will carry you toward your goals. As Shakespeare wrote “To thine own self be true.”

#4 Set Goals that are Yours to Achieve - Your goals must be literally “Your Goals.” It doesn’t seem possible for you to be passionate about someone else’s goals. For you to achieve the goals you have set before you, you must believe deep within yourself that the goals are working toward will take your life where you want to go. Don’t take on goals for yourself that were designed by someone else. Look at your life and your vision then set goals that you will walk through fire to achieve.

#5 Live a Life of Action - Remember to spend less time on setting your goals than Acting on them. Stay in Motion. If you have a tendency to get stuck in the “planning” stage of goal setting, then start with setting smaller achievable goals each day that you make a priority to reach before the end of each day. If your goal is three home parties a week then set a goal that is yours to achieve within each day. Can you Make someone book a home party? Of course not, but YOU can take the action (10 calls a day) that means you are taking this goal seriously and investing yourself in the process of reaching that goal.

If it means only setting small achievable goals daily in order to you to Your vision, your passion, your gifts and your daily action are the keys to effective goal setting. Setting goals that you believe in and fueling your dreams with your life passions are all part of the successful entrepreneur mindset. Develop your own successful entrepreneur mindset that You can achieve yourself with planning and action!

Integrity in the Moment of Choice

Whenever you make a new commitment to yourself, such as to begin a new exercise program, you will undoubtedly be challenged. A large part of life lies outside your direct control, and one of those external influences will eventually impact you and press you to abandon your original plan at least temporarily.

It’s often unwarranted to abandon a plan prematurely in the face of a minor setback. But to say that you should always follow your original plan no matter what is to ignore the unpredictability of reality.

In such situations you must exercise integrity in the moment of choice. You cannot simply put your plan on autopilot and assume the intervention of your intellect will never be required.

Integrity in the moment of choice means you must revisit your original intention and apply it to the situation at hand, a situation you probably did not foresee. What’s most important is not that you follow the letter of the original intention but rather the spirit of it. Sometimes this is an easy choice to make; other times it can be very difficult.

For example, suppose you make a resolution to exercise every day, and after a few days you injure yourself. Is it best to press on with your injury, or should you allow it time to heal? If continuing to exercise with the injury could further endanger your health, it would be unwise to continue until you are well. But you can still honor the spirit of your intention by devoting some of your recuperative time to the improvement of your health, such as via yoga, meditation, reading, or preparing healthy foods.

This is why clarity is so important knowing the “why” behind your actions. When you encounter obstacles, you can either press on, or you can find another way to satisfy the same intent. So if your plan was to exercise daily and the “why” was to improve your health and self-discipline, your plan may be thwarted at some point, but your intention need not be.

Integrity in the moment of choice does not mean making excuses upon encountering an obstacle that does not warrant surrender. It means adapting your plan to the situation at hand while still honoring the true spirit of your original intent.

Repeatedly exercising integrity in the moment of choice builds strength of character. Repeatedly failing to do so fosters weakness of character.

Linking Purpose to Daily Tasks

How do you know what’s the best use of your time right
now?

Link your daily tasks to your purpose.

You’ll make better choices and see the value in seemingly
insignificant or trivial tasks. It keeps you focused on doing
what needs to be done to get what you say you want.

It’s one thing to say what you want, to choose projects
that will get you what you want, and set goals that will
achieve those projects.
But, you still have to do the
work. You still have to pay the price by just doing it.

Linking your purpose to what you do each day underlines
the responsibility and the discipline you need to complete
your projects.

Having an overall objective and doing what needs to be
done gets priority. You can make your choices about what
you are doing consciously, knowing that every little bit helps.

For example, one of your projects in support of your purpose
of an independent self-sustaining life may be getting a
newer, more reliable car.

Choosing to bring your lunch rather than spending eight
dollars at the café every day is obviously the right choice. By
doing the math, you quickly see you’ll save about $150 a
month on lunch. Putting that money aside will get you your
new car that much faster.

It’s the little things done consistently and persistently
that make the huge difference in achieving our projects,
whatever our projects are.

Even with exercise and fitness. New medical research has
shown shorter periods of exercise done more often are
more effective than longer periods of exercise done less
frequently. Even if the longer exercise sessions add up to
more overall time, they still aren’t as effective.

Build in momentum sustainers. If you’re like most
people you start out a new project enthusiastically, and then
lose track of it in the bustle of all your other obligations.

By building in appointments with people to check in with,
and appointments with yourself for review, you force yourself
to be accountable. You might want to set up weekly goals for
yourself, or make an agreement to accomplish specific
tasks by your next check in date.

Additional techniques for linking daily tasks and long
term projects include:

* Remind yourself what to do to support your purpose.
Put up reminder notes around your house to keep your
purpose front and center.

* Figure out how long specific tasks take so you won’t
skip out by telling yourself it takes too long, or you don’t have
the energy.

At one point I decided I would get more
serious about housework, especially doing the dishes. I
had told myself it was too big a hassle to fiddle with before I
went to bed. I was embarrassed to discover cleaning up the
dishes actually took five to seven minutes.

* Use lost, or fiddle time, to punch a hole in a bigger
project.
I no longer leave dishes in the living room, at
my desk or next to the bed. I take them into the kitchen when
I am going, rather than waiting to make it a task to be done.

* Build in an artificial deadline and put yourself on a
schedule.
Play a game with yourself, and even reward
yourself, for being a good kid when you’ve done one of those
necessary but not fun little jobs.

* Give yourself credit for what you have done and the
hassles and work it was to accomplish it.
I live in a
wonderful town. When I tell people where I live, their reaction
is usually “You’re so lucky to get to live there.” Luck had
nothing to do with it. It’s part of a project I have in giving
myself the life style I want.

Focus on Your Goals

Focus is the single most important factor that will determine whether your dreams come true or not. Depending on what your dreams are, there are so many rivers to cross. Some hurdles look quite formidable, and a lot of folks give up at the first sign of a setback.

Focus helps you put your act together. It helps you mobilize your resources and channel them in one direction. That way, you make progress consistently in the direction of your goal or milestones.

Imagine the lamps in the front of your car. Most models use the same size and bulb and wattage. What makes a full beam is focus. Driving on a dark road at midnight, you can see up to a kilometer ahead. If the beam is focussed further, it can generate heat. Focussed further still, it cut through some materials. That is the power of focus.

To fulfil your dreams, you have to break it down into actionable segments, goals. Fulfilling the dream involves achieving the goals that make up the dream. Focus enables you meet your goals.

Without focus, you become distracted. You lose direction. Your priorities get messed up. You start to look in different directions. This may involve beginning other projects, when the one at hand has not been pursued to a logical conclusion. The cycle continues, and the net effect is that you litter the landscape with abandoned projects. If you consider the time, energy and resources committed into these abandoned projects, put together and focussed on one project, results would have been achieved.

This brings to mind a simple experiment we did in junior high. To draw a simple straight line from point A to point B, without using a straight edge. To do that successfully, we were instructed to mark out the two points at two opposite ends of a plain sheet of paper. Then placing our pencil on point A, we were to keep our eyes on point B, as we draw the line. The net effect was a simple (maybe not perfect) straight line from point A to B. We were told to repeat the experiment, this time, place our pencil at point a, and keep our eyes on the pencil as it makes its way to point B. You can guess the result; a wavy line from point A to nowhere. By the time the pencil got to the opposite edge of the paper, we had to look for point B is. We had all gone way off mark.

It was a simple and powerful lesson in focus, though sadly, few of us took it to heart; keep your eyes where you are going, and you will get there. Keep your eyes where you are, and you will get lost.

Have you ever wondered what is the difference between a magnet and a nail? They are both made of carbon steel. It is in its molecular structure. Each has a north and south polarity. In the magnet, all the molecules are in perfect alignment, all north poles pointing in one direction (to make the north pole) and all south poles pointing in the opposite direction (to make the south pole). This is what accumulates to constitute the magnetic force. In the nail, the alignment is haphazard. They point in all directions. The net effect is that the electromagnetic forces cancel themselves and the resultant magnetic force is nil.

If you bring a nail within the magnetic field of a magnet, it sucks it in. While still attached to the magnet, the nail becomes a magnet too, and can magnet other metals. What happens is the magnetic force of the magnet forces the molecules in the nail to put its act together and line up in one direction. If you remove the nail, its molecular array returns to its former state, and it becomes a non-magnet one more time.

The magnet is a focused guy. He pulls its resources together and achieves. The nail is a confused guy, he deploys its resources in all directions, jumps from project to project and cancels out whatever progress he would have made.

As a shrewd manager of or time, energy and resources we need to plan and focus. You may have a thousand ideas. Create an idea bank in your computer and store them for safekeeping. Each idea has its time. Nothing can stop an idea whose time has come. If you run before time, you wear yourself out, and add your idea to your database of abandoned projects. Instead of the idea motivating you, it now becomes a source of discouragement.

Each well-run army knows its strategic strengths, and how many theatres of war it can prosecute simultaneously. If it over stretches itself, it sets itself up for defeat.

It may be time step back review your current ongoing projects. Take a second look at your short term and long term goals. Do you still believe in your dream? If so, look at projects that are on the critical path to the fulfillment of your dream. Suspend projects that distract you from getting to where you are headed. If all your ongoing projects are relevant, assign priorities to them, continue with the most critical, and keep the others in view. Pursue one project to its logical conclusion. It may not necessarily mean staying permanently on one project. You can push it to a stage that it becomes self-sustaining or delegate-able to others, then delegate and move on. It will continue to thrive, as you break new grounds. Also you can take on other projects, if and only if they do not distract you, or slow down your primary thrust.

It does not make sense to complain that you don’t have enough time to do the things you need to do, simply because you got your life cluttered with so many things that are nice, but not absolutely necessary.

It is great to start. Most folks don’t. But starting alone is not enough. Finish what you start. The laurel belongs to those who finish, not to starters. The end of the matter is better than the beginning thereof. If you remain focussed long enough, you will get to the finish line.

Making The Goal-Setting Process a Partnership

MAKING GOALS: Effective and motivational goals engage employees in work they can realistically perform and complete, and which has been shown to be relevant both to the organization and to the employees’ interests.

MAKE THE GOAL-SETTING PROCESS A PARTNERSHIP: There are four kinds of goals you and your employees should discuss and develop together: 1. Routine. This is an extension of what people are already doing. “Last year you produced 20,000 units; this year, you’ll turn out 22,000.” “Last period you trained 150 people. This time you’ll train 180.” “You’ve been making 15 new business calls per week. You’ll up that to 18.” There’s some challenge, of course, to improving performance over that of the last time period, even if the goals are not particularly new or exciting. 2. Problem solving. Departmental errors are too high. Missed deadlines are too many. The work flow is sluggish. In short, you have problems. Set goals with employees that will identify problems and, hopefully, solve them. 3. Innovative. Your employees have the know-how to suggest new and better ways of doing things. Putting some of your best people to work on innovative goals makes good business sense and is motivating for employees. 4. Personal. What are your employees doing for themselves? What kind of training and education, skills building, or behavioral change could benefit an employee? What steps could the employee take to advance his or her ability and to become more valuable to the organization? Nothing is more important to employees than their personal objectives.

Securing Business Cover Is Particularly Key to the Health of Your Firm

There is no denying the fact that the triumph of a firm is attributed to the work done by the staff, however one misfortune can swiftly wipe out your plans & shrink the revenue to zero. In order to steer clear of such an example, you are suggested to insure your organisation, whether it is a small company or a giant corporation. Nonetheless, please keep in mind that smaller organisations are somewhat more probable to require business insurance cover in today’s world. This is generally since smaller firm owners will have placed their total lives and pay cheque straight into the company. Find UK professional indemnity insurance to help protect yourself against all sorts of legal actions.

A number of the topics usually guarded by the majority of business insurance covers entail: natural catastrophes, landslides, machine or equipment defect that shuts down the business, loss of profits due to workforce slip-up & litigation brought against the company.

There are hordes of insurance organisations, which offer covers that combine protection for all important property and liability risks in one single package. You can also get a separate policy covers. Such a coverage is commonly labelled as a business owners’ policy (BOP). Big companies might well buy a commercial cover.

BOPs comprise of office insurance for property & kit belonging to the firm. If there is any loss of earnings as a result of disruption of functions and trade because of accidents like earthquakes, it can be protected under the Business Interruption Insurance.

There are various liabilities, which insure the firm’s legal blame for the injury it may inflict to others. It is the result your company’s failure to do the business operations. It can also be the physical injury or property damage caused owing to substandard manufactured goods, faulty installations & slips in services provided.

Still, BOPs don’t cover against professional liability, car cover, staff re-payment or health and disability cover. Instead separate policies are needed for professional services, commercial vehicles and employees. On average, floods, earthquakes and terrorist attacks are not protected in the business insurance. Please double check before you acquire a policy!

Forget New Year’s Resolutions — They Don’t Work

You can forget about making New Year’s Resolutions if you’re hoping for a successful outcome. Most aren’t worth the paper they’re written on.

No less than Mark Twain has written of New Year’s Resolutions, “Now is the accepted time to make your regular annual good resolutions. Next week you can begin paving hell with them as usual. Yesterday, everybody smoked his last cigar, took his last drink, and swore his last oath. Today, we are a pious and exemplary community. Thirty days from now, we shall have cast our reformation to the winds and gone to cutting our ancient shortcomings considerably shorter than ever.”

The biggest majority of New Year’s Resolutions have gone by the wayside before January is over and most won’t even be remembered six months later. And the reason is pretty simple: Most are made in response to something negative — a habit or situation that the person wants to change or end. And therein lies the problem - it’s hard to develop momentum from a negative response. It is always easier to move toward something rather than away from something.

Consider one of the most adopted resolutions — weight loss. No one can get excited about losing weight because it requires deprivation. It’s a negative response to concerns about appearance, health, etc. The results of weight loss Resolutions demonstrate their weakness. A 1998 survey sponsored by Gardenburger found that more than three-fourths of all women between the ages of 25 and 54 make diet and weight-loss plans each year. Nearly nine of 10 respondents reported only occasional or no success, while almost half lost little or actually gained weight instead.

The people who succeed at losing weight and maintaining the loss have usually been motivated by a dream much bigger and more positive than just losing weight. They see themselves living a healthy lifestyle. They begin to act and think like people who are in good physical shape. There’s more of a radical change in a person’s thinking and actions than you see with most resolutions. It wouldn’t be possible to effect and sustain such a radical change unless the person is motivated by a big dream that is positive in nature.

Another popular aim is to quit smoking. And I can certainly relate to that — I was a three-pack-a-day smoker until I celebrated a smoke-free New Year’s twelve years ago. For over twenty years I had tried to quit many times using every tool and technique I heard about. But as long as I was trying to quit, I couldn’t break the grip.

Instead, I developed a dream to become a non-smoker. I fell in love with the idea of breathing clean air instead of smoky air, of my body and clothes smelling nice instead of smoky. I thought about how wonderful it would be to taste food again. I decided to start acting and thinking like a non-smoker, and when the thinking took hold I simply quit smoking. In all the years since, I’ve never wanted another cigarette, never even thought about wanting one.

If you’re going to make a New Year’s Resolution this year, make one with a high probability for success. Make a Resolution to develop a life plan. Most people are in a free-fall through life, careening from one crisis to the next. They wake up one day and 10, 20, 30 or more years have passed and they’re nowhere near where they thought or hoped they’d be. Working with a life plan you’re much more apt to be excited by what the future brings even if you succeed at attaining only a small part of your plan.

A life plan should address all areas of your life including finances, health, relationships, career, spiritual and even recreational. While a lot of our focus tends to be on financial issues like increasing income or decreasing debt, or health issues like losing weight or quitting smoking, the undeniable truth is that a life lived out of balance isn’t a life of quality at all.

If you were going to build a new house and you had this idea for a fabulous master bedroom suite, you wouldn’t rush out and start building the master bedroom. You’d have a complete plan before you started. When you approach resolutions and goals in the same manner, you end up with a much better chance of achieving success.
