You toss and turn in bed trying to sleep but get up feeling frustrated. When you finally do get some sleep, it is o?nly for a few hours because it is time to get up and go to work. Then, you go through the day feeling groggy, depressed and extremely exhausted.

You try drinking cups and cups of coffee but instead of feeling awake, you feel even worse. A potentially disastrous headache starts drumming at the corner or your head. The drumbeats get louder and more persistent by each passing minute. As a last resort, you let nature take its course. You fall flat in front of your computer screen and start snoozing.

So, I might have exaggerated a little with the last sentence, but the fact is, many people do not get the proper amount of sleep they need everyday. As a direct result of this, they are not able to function optimally in their jobs, studies or even simple daily tasks.

There are many factors that can cause insomnia such as, stress, illness, a new sleeping environment and many more. Treatments can also vary depending o?n the type of insomnia you are suffering from. However, there are some basic things that you can do to practice healthy sleeping habits.

1) Set a conducive sleep environment

Regardless of how absurd it may sound, it is crucial to set the correct atmosphere in your bedroom. The most important rule is to remember that your bedroom is a place for you to sleep and rest. So, get rid of the television, radio or anything that can distract you from sleeping. People tend to sleep better in rooms that are a little bit cooler rather than a little bit warmer. So, make sure your room is cool and aired. Switch off all the lights, as it is easier for your brains to prepare your body to sleep in the dark. Aside from making sure that your mattress and pillows are comfortable, you also have to change the sheets often as cleanliness always promotes a pleasant environment.

2) Maintain a consistent sleeping and wake-up time

Everybody has a biological clock that records and keeps track of their sleeping pattern. Therefore, it is important to keep regular sleep hours, particularly the wake-up time. According to your wake-up time, your body then tires at the appropriate time enabling you to go to sleep. This also ensures that you will get the proper amount of sleep you need before you wake up. In other words, when you establish a regular bedtime routine, your brain automatically send a signal to your body to unwind and to go to sleep and to wake up after getting enough hours of sleep.

3) Stay away from any sleep-stealing stimulus

You should avoid consuming stimulus such as caffeine and nicotine late in the evening as these can disrupt your sleep later in the night. Caffeine is quite a strong stimulant that will keep your brain awake while nicotine activates your metabolism, thus keeping your body energetic. Instead, consume drinks that can aid you to sleep well, like warm milk, hot chocolate or even a glass of milk

4) Exercise regularly

Studies have shown that regular exercise approximately 4 to 6 hours before bedtime can actually help you fall asleep later in the night. So keep those abs burning and legs walking at least 20 minutes a day. However, avoid heavy exercises close to bedtime as that will raise your body temperature and keep you fully awake.

5) Cool off your body temperature

People tend to fall asleep as their body temperature falls. So, how can the old story of taking a hot bath before bed help you sleep? When you take a hot bath or a long hot shower, your body temperature goes up, but when you get into bed and the body temperature starts to fall, that helps you to sleep. Although this is something that happens naturally before sleep, a hot bath actually reinforces that physiological process.

6) Don?t force yourself to sleep!

If you cannot go to sleep, don?t force yourself by lying in bed and trying to sleep. Restrict the time in bed to the amount of time you are actually sleeping. If you are not asleep in 15 to 20 minutes, get out of bed, go into another room and engage in some sedentary activity until you begin to feel sleepy. Listen to some calm music, make a to-do list or read a really boring book. Then, return back to bed when you feel sleepy.

7) Avoid afternoon naps

Taking naps during the day directly interferes with your sleeping routine. Your ability to sleep at night gets affected because all those short power naps actually ensures that you get continual rest during the day. So, when it comes for you to sleep at night, you actually feel zippy and alert.

Bridal Shower Etiquette

Filed under:Life Of Relationships — posted on @ 11:13 pm

While showers have evolved and become more relaxed in recent
years, there are still certain rules of bridal shower etiquette
that should be observed in order to avoid offending anyone.
Since there will be a variety of groups there - friends, family
and coworkers in most cases - it’s important to understand how
everyone should interact. Especially in the case of family,
mothers and grandmothers can place a great deal of importance on
proper bridal shower etiquette, so make sure you know what the
“rules” are!

The Maid of Honor is usually the person expected to plan and
organize the bridal shower. If she lives out of town, however,
it’s fine for someone else to do the honors. Don’t take over
without checking with her, though. It is her privilege, and you
should always ask her before assuming anything. If you are going
to do it for her, make sure you keep her as involved as she
would like to be through frequent emails and phone calls.

Bridal shower etiquette traditionally says that a shower should
be at least four to six weeks before the wedding. This is for
purely practical reasons - the bride is going to be too busy any
closer to the ceremony - but if she’s coming home only two weeks
before the wedding, talk to her and see how she feels about
having a shower in her honor so close to the wedding. She may
think this is fine if most of her friends will be able to be in
attendance at that time.

There has been an uncomfortable trend in recent years for large
showers with nearly everyone the bride knows invited. This is
not what the bridal shower is supposed to be. A bridal shower is
supposed to be a small, intimate gathering of the bride’s
closest friends and family. Proper bridal shower etiquette
dictates a group of no more than ten to twenty guests.

The guest list should include the wedding party, the mothers of
the bride and groom, sisters of the bride and groom, and the
bride’s closest friends and/or coworkers. It shouldn’t include
every female invited to the wedding.

Finally, bridal shower etiquette means being sure to
include the wedding party and the mothers in the shower itself
in some way. Ask each person to take on some responsibility,
whether it is recording a list of the gifts and givers as they
are opened or organizing the group for games. This will make
everyone feel they’ve been part of this special day.

The Straight Scoop on Uranium

Filed under:World Of Technology — posted on @ 10:50 pm

Blame the scientist who “almost” discovered uranium on why this atomic element is named after the seventh planet from the sun. Imagine if the sequence below had taken place in any other way. What would we now be calling the yellowcake that powers nuclear reactors across the world? You would be surprised. This is the story behind uranium’s name.

The word “uranium” has a confusing past, but through no fault of its own. Since the beginning of the sixteenth century, in a silver mining town in an area which is now part of the Czech Republic, miners discovered a black mineral they called “pechblende.” Pitchblende, or uraninite as it is now better known, is a uranium-rich mineral which is also comprised of lead, thorium, radio and rare earths. In the late 19th century, it was from this same northwest Bohemian town where Marie Curie got her pitchblende and isolated radium and polonium from the ore.

European scientists Roentgen, Becquerel, Villard, and others were aggressively experimenting with pitchblende and discovered ionizing radiation, X-rays, beta radiation and gamma rays. Pierre and Marie Curie named the gamma ray phenomenon, attributed to the radium in pitchblende, “radioactivity.” MIT professor of biology Samuel Prescott, who was closely following Madam Curie’s research, began testing those gamma rays on food. He discovered the gamma rays destroyed bacteria in food. From Prescott’s work, food manufacturers discovered they could extend the shelf life of canned goods. Since then, radiation and radioactivity have become an integral part of both the medical profession and the food industry.

Let’s go back about one century. In 1789, Martin Heinrich Klaproth presented his discovery of a “strange kind of half metal” to Berlin’s Royal Academy of Sciences. The German chemist had, on the face of it, isolated uranium oxide from pitchblende. Klaproth suggested this new atomic element (number 92 on the periodic chart) be called “uran.”

Not until 1841 did another European scientist, Eugene-Melchior Peligot, finally isolate uranium as an atomic element. Klaproth was just stabbing in the dark when he tried to identify what “uranium” was. He failed to explain what uranium was, or even to understand it. Nonetheless, his credibility remained intact as a pioneering scientist. Martin Klaproth was later credited for isolating zirconium, chromium and cerium.

Klaproth’s naming ceremony for uranium was a political move, moreso than a scientific christening of the 92nd element. It was because of Dr. Bode. His Royal Academy colleague, German astronomer Johann Elert Bode, had been fuming since England’s William Herschel had discovered the seventh planet. Herschel honored King George III by calling this planet, “the Georgium Sidus (the Georgian Planet). Bode argued the new planet be renamed to conform to the classically mythological names of the other planets, such as Mercury, Mars, Venus, Jupiter and Saturn. Bode chose Uranus, the Greek name for the earliest supreme god.

The Uranus planetary debate went on for about, and was finally settled in 1850, about the same time that a British firm began using uranium in glass to give it a fluorescent yellow or greenish appearance. The point is this: If Klaproth hadn’t contributed to the Uranus-versus-Georgium Sidus debate by naming his “strange half metal” uran, we might be call uranium stocks something else.

Music of the 70’s

Reliving The Music Of The Seventies

We all associate songs and music with events in our life. Many songs hold special memories for us. We fondly remember the songs that were playing when we went to our first dance, the songs the school band attempted to play during half time at the high school football games, the songs that we heard on our first date, or the songs we heard on the radio while driving our first car.

The music of the 1970’s is probably the most impressive and most recognized of any era. The artists of the 1970’s provided us with numerous songs we loved to dance to and sing along with. At that time most bands actually played their own instruments and didn’t need to sequence part of it.

Remember how we used to listen to the music then? At first we had eight track players in our cars, then we moved upward to cassette players. Vinyl records were the most popular way to listen to our favorite music. Every week you could go to your local variety or record store and pick up the new #1 song on a 45 record for under $1.00. Of course, there was always the radio to listen to - most of the popular channels were on am radio. We had many styles of music to listen to, including the bubble gum music of David Cassidy and the Partridge Family, soft rock of Barry Manilow, the great dance tunes of the Bee Gees and the Commodores, rock of Aerosmith and Led Zeppelin, the brass band sounds of Chicago, or the disco beat of Chic and Donna Summers.

The nostalgia of the 1970’s music lives on today. We can listen to it on our local 70’s’radio station, on cds, on mp3, download it on our computer, and burn it onto cds. For those of us who prefer records, we can still purchase them at record stores, antique or second hand stores, or yard sales. Of course, many of us have held on to our own record collections and record players and can pull them out at any time when we need to relive those nostalgic days of the 1970’s. Some bands are still performing after more than 30 years. There’s nothing like seeing your favorite 1970’s performers live in concert!

The music of the 1970’s is still popular with people of all ages - not just those who grew up with it. It never grows old. It only gets better with each passing decade.
