Feeling the Hurt: Book Review

This is a book that will play with your emotions, one minute you feel rage - the next you feel pity. How could this man play with her heart so cruelly? How could she stay and allow him to slice large wounds into her heart - not just once, but repeatedly.

Marie Carroll has performed a difficult task and fully portrayed her main character as a sufferer, one whom many ailments and negativity become her world. Mrs. Carroll shows the consequences of this kind of long-term betrayal that affects the entire family’s emotions, finances and health.

At the end of the story, the decision of the main character had me debating whether she is completely stupid, or a saint.

If you want to read a story about obsessive behavior and cruel adultery that will leave you ranting for days - then this is the one for you.

Requiem

Like many shy people, she had the most radiant smile. It not only curved her lips but it also shone from her hazel eyes. Even her abundant blond curls seemed to dance, especially as she waggled her shoulders in a joyful little gesture when she was really tickled about something.

I want to keep the memory of her smile alive for the rest of my life, to remind me how precious and uncertain life and friendship can be. She was found alone in her large in-ground swimming pool and there are no good answers as to how this 51-year-old mother could be gone from us.

She was an entrepreneur, building her little real-estate empire on rental properties. She was interested in helping lower income families find safe and affordable housing. To hold costs down, she worked on her properties herself, getting contract help only as a last resort. She scraped and painted, roofed and plumbed, mowed and weed-whacked her handful of multi-family units as well as her own large rural home. She allowed late rents a little too easily for her accountant’s comfort, but felt that the people she selected to be her tenants were worth the risk. She looked for working singles who really tried; for struggling families; for those who had faced financial blows but were still credit-worthy.

Although she came from a family of great wealth and prestige, she lived far enough away and so simply that most who knew her never made the connection. Nor did she encourage any kind of recognition.

In addition to the tragedy of her death, there will be added the suffering of uncertainty by these families who sheltered under her wing. She had made a handwritten will. But it lacked the two necessary witness signatures that would have made her wishes binding. Now, those whom she wanted to share her personal collections from around the world, souvenirs of her compassion and zest, will not receive them. Because she died “intestate,” without legally recognized directions for the distribution or care of her assets, the distribution of her estate will be guided by the actions of state-appointed attorneys and processes.

She had begun to trust my friend and financial advisor, and was gradually expanding her sensibilities about asset protection. Partly because she was so shy, partly because he does not ever “rush” his clients, partly because good planning takes some time, she did not have the appropriate protections for her small business. She never got the time, though she had the clear and expressed interest.

In addition to her real estate concerns, for pleasure and relaxation she had developed a creative business. She sculpted carpet in a workshop on her own property. It was physically demanding additional hard labor, rolling out the heavy materials, cutting the tough fibers, seaming them into place with heat and sheer strength, but her custom clients thought her efforts were well worth while. Some pieces had even been used in feature films. An area business expressed interest in carrying her work, and in having her represent their interests to her customers.

She belonged to a small-business network and was planning a summer party around her pool to celebrate their mutual successes. No one yet knows the details of her drowning.

We do know we are not the same without her; without her tremendous love of life, passion for travel, jazz and world-music; without her curiosity about all the great religions of the world, especially Eastern traditions. Without that gorgeous smile.

In her great gentleness, she overlooked herself, and in doing that, exposed those under her wings, including her own dearly-loved son.

May her abrupt loss be a life lesson to other small business owners who make excuses for lack of financial planning. Please take the time you have; it is literally, the only time you get.

How to send Internet fax via email faxing software?

Nowadays, fax services are undeniable one of the most important
communications among human. If doesn’t matter how big is your
business, what’s your business nature and how you run your
business - you just need a fax service to send out those
documents. The recent survey that shows a bigger percentage of
business phone bills are for faxing prove that the fax is still
one of the ‘must-have services’ for your office.

However, faxing nowadays doesn’t rely only on conventional
faxing machine. By utilizing the Internet, we can now easily
send out ‘eFax’. Internet faxing, or sometimes known as email
faxing or online fax, is one of the latest technologies that
provides its users to send and receive faxes without a fax
machine. Instead, Internet access and an email account is all
that is required.

If you used a fax machine before then you can understand how
frustrating it is when the fax machine jams, cuts off page text,
stops in the middle of a transmission, or the receiving fax
machine is constantly busy or out of paper. Further more, the
extra cost of maintaining a fax machine become a heavy burden to
the users.

Internet faxing is giving a much more convenient faxing service
to the user compare to traditional fax machine. No more paper
jamming, smooth transmission, 24 hours stand by with no more
engage tone, and most of all, minimum cost for maintaining the
service. Also, Internet faxing users don’t need to pay for the
extra phone line, fax equipments and maintenance cost. All you
need is to pay the subscribing fees to the faxing software and
the cost per fax.

Seeing Internet fax as an effective answer to the old fax
machine, several vendors have produced and are selling Internet
faxing services nowadays. There are companies that offer
software only solutions that allow you to fax directly from your
computer to any fax machine; and there are services offer
fax-to-IP Internet gateway products, which are hardware-based
routers that emulate a fax machines.

Faxing services that use software (for example eFax or CallWave
fax) require that you sign up with fax service provider. For
eFax Internet faxing services, the monthly service charge is
from $0-$19.95 depend on which package you go for; while
limiting their users to only receive fax, CallWave fax charge
their users less than 10 bucks per monthly. The advantages of
using this method are that faxing becomes considerably cheaper
because you are not making long distance connections over the
phone lines, no hardware is required, you get faster
transmission, you can send many faxes at once, no dedicated fax
lines are needed, and a web interface is available if you wish
to add fax-on-demand capability to a website.

Another type of Internet faxing is known as fax-to-IP. Fax-to-IP
Internet gateway products needs hardware-based routers that
emulate a fax machines. With these, faxing is done in the
regular way using the fax machine, but the gateway device, which
then dials the destination fax machine and sends the fax,
interrupts the process. The fax-to-IP service. is
good if you don’t send a lot of faxes, but would still like to
take advantage of the savings of using Internet delivery. It is
also good if you do a lot of international fax calls. The
disadvantages are that you won’t save much on either domestic
faxing, or faxing to countries where the Internet infrastructure
is less well developed.

Undeniable, faxing is one of the core communications in our
daily life. With the rise of high speed Internet, Internet
faxing had gave us a new option on faxing. As the monthly
running cost of Internet faxing is relative low and you can
always enjoy a free trial on the service, we believe you should
give a try on this latest technology.

What’s behind the Explosive Growth in Distance Learning?

There is a ground swell of support globally to support the growth of distance learning. Market research firms, government agencies, public and private companies, and even venture capital firms - those companies that invest in new and emerging businesses - all agree that distance learning’s future is very bright, and a good investment opportunity as well.

All this translates into a bright future for anyone looking at distance learning to accomplish their career, educational, and learning objectives. Chances are if there isn’t a program in place today for your specific needs, there will be one - soon. This article explains how the perfect storm is brewing for distance learning, in a very positive way. Several market factors are presented here, along with research from research and government agencies that show that distance learning is here to stay and may someday surpass traditional classroom attendance approaches to learning.

What’s driving Distance Learning growth?

Consider the following statistics from International Data Corporation on the market for distance learning - these figures and others are making many traditional colleges and universities re-vamp their courses and degree programs to make them available online.

  • There are 133 million U.S. adults or 66% of the adult population, which have Internet access today. That’s over half the entire U.S. population and serves as a strong incentive for colleges and universities to re-vamp their programs to support this untapped educational market.

  • According to International Data Corporation, over 90% of college students access the Internet, with 50% accessing the Web daily, and this is on a global scale. Colleges and universities have also found that to stay relevant to their traditional students, they have had to create online and distance learning programs quickly to stay up with their learning needs.

  • 87% of four-year colleges will offer distance-learning courses in 2004, up from 62% in 1998. According to International Data Corporation, 25% more colleges and universities added distance learning programs between 1998 and 2004.

  • By 2004, 2.2 million degree-seeking students are enrolled in distributed courses - CAGR of 33%. The growth of distance learning on a global scale has the attention of companies as well - they plan on spending $272B in the next five years on in-house training and education programs, according to International Data Corporation.

  • 51% of all online courses worldwide have online discussion forms in 2001, growing to 65% in 2005. This is a sign of how quickly the Internet’s performance is improving around the world. The bandwidth required to support online discussions is great news for distance learning. Now even the most geographically remote student can get the education they want.

    Summary

The implications are clear. Distance learning is growing rapidly and has been fortunate that many countries teach English in addition to their own native languages. What’s next on the horizon of distance learning is offering courses and degrees in multiple languages. International Data Corporation predicts that by 2006, 65% of all Internet users will be international.

Wood Floors - All About Wood Floors

Filed under:Home Improvement Center — posted on @ 3:33 pm

Wood floor installation

Wood is a superior floor covering in all but wet locations. Wood flooring is available in strips, planks and tiles, either solid or laminated. Made of hardwood, generally maple, cherry or oak; the strips and tiles have tongue-and-groove joints for secure laying. Most types are available finished or unfinished, and rough planking can be up to one foot wide, although rarely used because wide boards are more susceptible to curling and cupping.

Laminated wood flooring

Laminated wood floorings are normally comprised of a hardwood veneer over a solid pine core, or several layers of hardwood glued together under pressure, much like plywood. They are available in a variety of sizes and designs, and sometimes parquet tiles will be attached to a fabric backing, to facilitate faster, easier alignment. Laminated wood flooring is usually glued in place, and can be laid over any clean, dry sub-floor. Special methods and precautions must be observed when installing hardwood flooring on concrete, especially in basements where potential humidity levels may be sufficient to cause the wood to swell and buckle upwards.

If your sub-floor is rough or uneven, an underlay of 1/4″ plywood properly installed, will aid in the installation, appearance and longevity of your hardwood floor. It will also help reduce squeaks and the potential for cracking. If the new floor is higher than any adjacent floors, the edges (especially in doorways) should be finished with rounded or tapered hardwood mouldings.

The underlay can be covered with 15 lb. felt (sometimes known as tar paper, roofing felt, or building paper) which will further reduce squeaking and add to the life of the floor. Handling and storage is extremely important, and wood flooring materials should be allowed to rest for a minimum of one week in the area in which they are to be installed. This will allow the moisture content of the wood to reach some equilibrium with it’s surroundings; otherwise the floor boards may shrink or swell, sometimes quite drastically. The flooring should parallel the room’s long dimension, scattering the end-to-end joints, and leaving a perimeter gap equal to the thickness of the boards. Experienced flooring people will know just how tight to lay the boards, depending on the moisture content of the wood, and the relative humidity level in the room(s) on the day of installation.

Nailing hardwood

The choice of nails, or other fasteners, is also critical to the successful installation of your floor. With unfinished flooring, the fasteners must be properly set, to facilitate sanding prior to finishing.

FLOATING FLOORS are made of laminated floor panels, laid over 1/8″ high-density foam Floating wood floor system, over concrete slab.underlay, and glued at the joints. For basement floors, 6-mil polyethylene vapour barrier can be laid under the foam. Consult with your materials supplier and/or other experienced people before attempting to install a hardwood floor in a basement.

THE BOTTOM LINE: Selecting, installing and finishing a hardwood floor can be a rewarding experience, but do your homework first! If you have minimal experience working with wood, or you’re unsure about the particular installation, you should consider hiring a professional. The cost of the materials is quite high as compared to other floor coverings, and a professional installation will guard against damage, and guarantee satisfaction with your new hardwood floor.

Part 2: The Collapse of the Church Culture.

Part 2: The Collapse of the Church Culture. By Maurice Goulet

A person who claims to be a follower of Jesus Christ claims to have a relationship with him. This means they know him, not just about him (this was Paul’s claim in Philippians 3:10). Yet we have turned our churches into groups of people who are studying God as though they were taking a course at school or attending a business seminar. We aim at the head. We don’t deal in relationships. And we wonder why there is no passion for the Lord and his mission? It’s because, in our effort to disciple people, we’ve been barking up the wrong tree.

We have made following Jesus all about being a good church member. We are training people to be good club members, all the while wondering why our influence in the world is waning. The truth is, the North American church culture extracts salt from the world and diminishes the amount of light available to those in darkness who need to find their way.

In the modern world, how would we typically approach the spiritual learning objectives we’ve just identified? We’d write a curriculum, produce a conference, convene a class, create a study course, recruit a teacher or other expert, sign people up, teach the material to the students, and pass out completion certificates. Then we would wonder what would happen or change as a result of the experience. The truth is that we have very little evidence that academic or conferential learning changes behavior. I submit that there has never been more teaching or Christian education in the history of the world than there is in the US today. And yet, one survey indicates that only 9% of people who say they are ‘born again’ have a Biblical worldview. The question we should be asking today is how Do We Develop Followers of Jesus Christ?

The academic model for the last several hundred years involved an expert (teacher) who had information and disseminated it to less-informed people (students). This was the basic plot that developed into millions of episodes of death-by-lecture.

Students can now obtain more information over the Internet overnight than a teacher can deliver in lecture form in a month’s time. The issue now is learning, how to make sense out of the information that is available. The agenda is more and more being set by the learner. Another way to say this is that we have grown up with a Greek approach to education in the modern world. We are now returning to a Hebraic approach that is much closer to what we see Jesus using. One aspect of this is that the learner/disciple determines the curriculum.

In the modern world, it is believed that spiritual formation is accomplished by taking a student through a prescribed group of texts that addressed topics in a curricular approach. This is so deeply ingrained in us that we approach almost any learning experience in the church this way. In the world that is dawning, the curriculum approach to growing people is increasingly viewed as a supplemental strategy to the primary approach: learning agendas driven by life issues and informed by life experiences. Jesus facilitated spiritual formation in his disciples by introducing them to life situations and then helping them debrief their experiences. He taught them to pray. He did not lead them in a study course on prayer. He took them on mission trips; he didn’t read books to them on the subject of missions.

The consistent challenge I run into when discussing small groups is the prevalent notion that small groups should function primarily in a curriculum mode (a bible study, text-driven experience). This is why groups can move from one curriculum piece to another and never experience any real growth. In pre-modern and postmodern cultures the home was and is the center for spiritual formation. Consider this quote from Marvin Wilson: “Foundational to all theory on the biblical concept of family is the Jewish teaching that the home is more important than the synagogue. In Jewish tradition, the center of religious life has always been the home” (Marvin R. Wilson, “Our Father Abraham”, p. 214, 216).)

I am amazed at how our best church families have no clue as to how to have conversations at home about spiritual subjects. Churches are so busy getting people involved at the church that they’ve neglected this fundamental agenda of spiritual formation. The typical church family leaves spiritual stuff to what happens at the church, thereby delegating spiritual formation to the institution. And the institution encourages it!

What if youth ministers spent as much time with the parents as they did with their children? This would be a shift for most church expectations of staff. We typically hire children’s and youth ministers to run programs for children and young people. In fact, this approach by the church may do more to decimate the home as a spiritual center than anything coming into the home on television or the Internet.

As a youth, I grew up in the surfing culture. As a surfer, I never planned a single wave, but I did prepare to ride the waves when they came. God is making waves all around the North American church. Some churches are going to get to ride them. These are the churches that are prepared to get in on what God is up to.”

Typical approaches to the future involve prediction and planning. The better and biblical approach to the future involves prayer and preparation. The Apostles sitting in the Temple on the day of Pentecost were not engaged in a strategic planning retreat to plan the birth of the church and the early stages of the Christian movement. Not in their wildest dreams would they have scripted three thousand converts on Day One nor would they have predicted the leap of the Spirit to the Samaritans or to the Gentiles? Apparently not, based on their responses to both developments. Would they have recruited the rising star of Judaism to become the ultimate leader of the movement? Hardly. God does the planning; we do the preparing. He does not say, “I am waiting for you to develop plans I can bless.”

Spiritual preparation has the goal of getting God’s people in partnership with him in his redemptive mission in the world. The five elements of a spiritually prepared architecture are vision, values, results, strengths, and learning. The question we need to begin asking is, how do we cultivate vision? Vision is discovered, not invented. Jesus Christ said, “I will build my Church”. He is the one with the vision for our lives and the church. It is our job to discover what he has in mind, not to invent something he can get excited about.

I learned the following lesson early in life and it has eased my heart tremendously. God is always at work in every situation before I show up. As the reality of this fact sunk in, I realized that my job was not to analyze the situation really well and then to figure out a way to make something happen but rather to see what God is already doing and ask if I had a part to play.

We need to listen to people in our church, we need to look at our town or neighborhood and we need to talk with our leaders. But as we do that we must be focused on the question: What is God already doing here? Jesus models this kind of approach in John 5:19 when He says, “I do nothing on my own initiative. I only do what I see the Father doing. Further, the role of a leader is to help his people ask the question: What do we see God doing here? This is the starting point for the visioning process.

10 Things Donald Trump Can Teach You About Success

Donald Trump. The name is nearly synonymous with wealth, power, and fortune. Whether you love him or hate him, you have to agree that what he has accomplished in his life is something to respect. You simply can’t hate him just because he is rich, nor can you love him just because he is rich.

For those dreaming of that same kind of wealth and business savvy, simply wanting it is not enough. But if you are serious about building wealth, then you must be open to learning, and not just by reading a book - but by actually doing the work. This is after all where the greatest opportunities are born from. In this article, we’ll look at some popular quotes and sayings of Donald Trump and see what we can learn from his own success:

1. “As long as you’re going to be thinking anyway, think big.”
It’s very easy to sit back and let life just happen, to take what it hands you and settle for what you’ve got. Thinking big is all about positive reinforcement for accomplishing your goals. The biggest obstacle in building wealth is believing it is beyond your reach. Think big and you’ll be big.

2. “Listen to your gut, no matter how good something sounds on paper.”
Instincts play a special role in any kind of business you engage in. They are your guide in the decision making process and the backbone of your thoughts. Following your instincts is as simple as giving them a voice, challenging yourself to look at things differently and learning to look before you leap.

3. “You’re generally better off sticking with what you know.”
Mastering knowledge on a particular topic or market is key to your success, but equally important is having a passion for what you know. Not only will you avoid a lot of guess work, you will be more convincing to others. Remember the kid in school who wrote a book report without reading the book? Well, it didn’t turn out too well for him did it.

4. “Sometimes your best investments are the ones you don’t make.”
Not every investment you make is a good one, whether that investment be in the form of time, money or both. The trick is learning how to weigh pros and cons, explore and prepare for potential pitfalls, and making a judgement based on careful analysis. While something may sound like a good deal, it doesn’t mean it will be. Simply put, there is more to an investment than just the profits you may gain.

5. “I don’t make deals for the money. I’ve got enough, much more than I’ll ever need. I do it to do it.”
Passion. That’s really what it all comes down to - a passion for your work, for the process of business, and even a passion for the creation of wealth. There is a big difference between loving money and loving the process of making money.

6. “I try to learn from the past, but I plan for the future by focusing exclusively on the present. That’s were the fun is.”
If you worry too much about the future, you can’t possibly take steps in the present now to ensure that the future is successful. The past is merely a guide for helping you making better decisions in the present. By focusing on what you can do today to change your life, you are ensuring that you will reach goals sooner rather than “someday”. Right now is the best time to start!

7. “I wasn’t satisfied just to earn a good living. I was looking to make a statement.”
People who have a passion for their work can’t stop thinking or talking about it. They crave any opportunity to talk to other people with the same interests, they want to set themselves apart from the rest and ensure that when they are gone, they will be remembered for their unique accomplishments. The point is this - if you have an inescapable drive and passion for something, there is no way you can fail at it.

8. “Money was never a big motivation for me, except as a way to keep score. The real excitement is playing the game.”
The thrill of the game is where you will learn everything you need to know about becoming successful. People who built their own wealth are motivated by the process of making money. This is what divides the dreamers from the doers - those who love to play game are more likely to win than those who sit on the sidelines wishing it was them.

9. “Show me someone without an ego, and I’ll show you a loser.”
A strong, healthy ego goes a long way toward your success. Not only does it keep you fortified and focused on your success, you send a clear message to the world that you mean business. Think about it this way - would you let a surgeon perform an operation on you if he told he was not very smart and insecure about what he was doing? Certainly not. The reality is if you think like a loser, you can’t expect be anything but one.

10. “The final key to the way I promote is bravado. I play to people’s fantasies. People may not always think big themselves, but they can still get very excited by those who do. That’s why a little hyperbole never hurts.”
If you can get people excited, interested, turned on and tuned in to what you have to say and what you’re selling, then you have unlocked yet another door to success. Excitement is contagious, it’s part of our evolution, and with the spread of excitement comes an increased interest, awareness and demand for what you have to offer.

Life Without Reciprocal Link

After the latest google update codenamed Jagger, reciprocal link has less relevancy than ever before. Many have abused this system before and there are even sites that thrived by offering link exchange programs.

Reciprocal linking occuring naturally is not wrong in any way. But, many that reciprocate take advantage of the fact that a site A will not be penalized for giving out links to another site B. Meanwhile, B has a higher link popularity due to the vote from A. So hey, why not reciprocate and increase the ranks for both sites? Doing so excessively results in both participants having a higher web rank despite not contributing anything to the overall internet community.

Now, Google values reciprocal link less. Specifically, if a site A points to site B that Google considers offensive, site A will be penalized. Therefore, each site now has to be careful on whom it gives its endorsement to.

Do not worry. With reciprocal link on its way out (slowly), we have no choice but to give the best information available to the web community. Here are several ways to increase your site rankings:

1. Create content.

The purpose of search engine is to help people find the information that they need. In the business world, successful companies always give what their customers want. Therefore, create content that your potential customers want and they will be grateful for that.

2. Give and You Shall Receive.

Give away your content and you shall receive more visitors. This idea is a basic marketing principle. This is like giving away samples of new products at a fair or at an exhibition. Your job is to let people know about your products and/or services. The more people try it out, the higher chance of them becoming your regular customers. It works similar in the search engine world. If you charge exobirant amount of dollars for service that nobody knows, who would come and try out your products?

3. List your website to good web directory.

Ok, submitting your sites to good web directories will require your site to be a high PR site or it costs money. Either way, this is not an efficient marketing campaign. Why would you want to link to web directories if you already have a decent PR rank? You will be better off concentrating on your existing visitors rather than acquiring new visitors. Therefore, linking to good web directories are for a new less-visited site. However, good web directories normally do not want to link to small unproven website. Why? As stated before, if site A links to a bad site B, then A is considered a supporter of B, which means that Google may penalize site A for linking to B.

That leaves us an option to paid web directories. Paid Web Directories generally has a good PR rank. However, to get a number of links from them gets really expensive. If your budget permits, this might be a good idea. However, please remember also that PR rank is not static. When a particular website provides useful information to its visitors, its PR rank will generally increase and vice versa.

4. List your website to general web directory.

Web submission is generally free or require a link back from you. Reciprocal linking is risky therefore it is not advisable if you can still find the free web directory. Please note that these free web directories do not actually want to work for free. They are building hard to provide relevancy to the search engine and increase their link popularity. Therefore, someday, these freebies might become quality web directories.

At that time, they will then charge fee for new site listing. Meanwhile, you are already listed … for free ! What is your risk? None that I can think of. If a bad site A points to your site, you will not be penalized for it. You cannot control who can or cannot link to your site. There are millions of websites to monitor. Therefore, register your site to the free web directories. Some of them will be mediocre or non existent within a few years. But, some that does succeed will bump your PR ranking up. The best thing of all is you don’t spend a dime listing your site with them. At least, not yet.
