Dare To Be Inconsistent, Lopsided, And Totally Courageous

I was talking to one of my coaching clients and she was talking about not being able to stay with a meditation practice, so she gave up meditating altogether. “I’m either gung ho all the way or I don’t show up at all,” she said in disgust. We were talking on an evening when she “hadn’t shown up at all.” She had washed dishes instead. You would have thought she had mutilated small children. And gauging the self-attack that followed, I don’t think that meditation would have helped. The Dalai Lama, himself would have had to have shown up and told her it was no big deal. And I bet he would have given her one of those big goofy, freedom-filled smiles.

I understand the desire to make changes in your life and I applaud them heartily. But I invite you to be inconsistent and unreliable. I dare you to break promises to yourself and I dare you to make new ones. This is the courageous path of learning to grow, love and trust yourself…and to keep dancing into the life you desire, no matter what.

To me, there’s beauty, intelligence and grace in showing up lopsided, showing up fitfully, showing up sporadically. Showing up is showing up. The dream-basher in you pushes you into airtight commitments. But real change is about breathing, coming in and going out. Daring to live your calling is a path of invitation, not interrogation.

My favorite poet Rumi, an absurdly free and brilliant spirit, writes:

“Come, come whoever you are, wanderer, worshipper, lover of leaving

it doesn’t matter,

Ours is not a caravan of despair

Come, even if you have broken your vow a hundred times

Come, come again.”

A Course in Miracles echoes this same philosophy by telling us to “choose once again,” whenever we have made a choice that has felt painful. It doesn’t say beat yourself up bloody, give up, throw in the towel, recount how many other things you’ve given up on. It asks us to save time and just begin again, choose the new behavior or belief now, let go of the past, and give birth to a different experience this very minute.

When I first began writing, I had an awful time with myself. I’d come up with all kinds of perfectly devised writing schedules for myself and then avoid or blow every one of them. I’d be furious with myself, convinced I was never going to be able to accomplish anything. I’d feel miserable and pathetic. But finally I did make huge progress as a writer. Not by setting up a better writing program. But through learning to love, comfort, and coax myself into action. In This Time I Dance!, I wrote that “Only the tender can breed the fierce.” This was so opposite to my initial thinking. Like my non-meditating client, I thought that if I had “misbehaved,” I needed a bigger stick, not an extra chocolate bar. But my guidance then, as now, reflected, “Be even kinder to yourself when you feel fear. Love, not anger, inspires right action.” And it was true. Part of me avoided writing because I was afraid to face myself. And only gentleness inspired more encounters.

Sometimes, we have an ill-advised idea of what showing up looks like. In the creative life, many people confuse rigidity with purity. But remember the creative personality might have many loves and devotions. And this is not distraction or avoidance. This is self-expression. When I lived in the mountains and was writing my book, I came into the city all the time to teach classes and to hang out at coffeehouses and secretly relish urban noise and stimulus. One person in a writing group said “If you were serious about that book, you’d just stay in the mountains and write.” I anguished over this comment for a long time.

But his puritan approach would have sucked the life out of me. I needed to make a living in the city and I enjoyed my urban escapades. I wanted both lives. Likewise, I have clients who are parents–who are not only going to sculpt or work on a sales brochure for their business. Another part of their lives is going to soccer practice and picking up Cheerios and bananas. They are not abandoning their passions. They are claiming more of them.

Focus on the behaviors you wish to encourage, not the other choices. If you are trying to lose weight, don’t agitate over your failure of will on the third day of your program. Celebrate the 2 days of enthusiasm and motivation. Only the wins countif you want to win. In 12 step lingo, “It’s all about progress, not perfection.”

I know the sticklers will tell you that taking one exercise class won’t help or spending one hour with your camera, but I disagree. Every act of love for yourself–makes a difference. That one time can boost your self-esteem and increase the likelihood that you’ll return. Go ahead, stumble into grace. Start and stop a million times. Get there late and leave early. Whatever it takes. So what, if in a linear world they call you erratic? In this world you are a daring hopscotch queen, a creative explorer, a traveler on a caravan of joy, and that works just fine, because you’re moving in the right direction.

How Not to be Ripped Off by Your Website Designer

As web designer my self, I have had the unfortunate luck of speaking to too many of my clients who have been ripped off by a web designer somewhere along the line. Whether it be that the designer never really finished the website, took the deposit and was never heard from again, or finished the website with less than promised quality.

No business, especially a small business, can afford to be taken advantage of by a web designer.

So what can you do? How can you prevent this from happening?

  • Get everything in writing! You should never turn over a dime without a contract. Make sure to include a detailed list of deliverables as well as completion date.
  • Never pay more than 50% of your project cost upfront! Never! Make them work for the rest of their money, if they are expecting a pay day upon completion of the website they will move to finish it much quicker.
  • Beware of prices that are just too low. If your project has been receiving bids in the $1,200 range and then out of the blue you receive one for $300, it might be too good to be true.
  • Ask for a reference, most reputable design firms will put you in touch with a recent client without hesitation.
  • Make sure the designer agrees to show you mock ups of your website before the project is complete. This way if you don’t like the look or need anything changed it can be taken care of before the website is live.
  • As obvious as this one sounds, check the portfolio! If you are looking to develop a full web based application check if they have done this sort of thing before! If not, there is a chance the designer might get in over his or her head.
  • Ask about the business, find out as much as you can! How many employees, where are they based out of, how long have then been in business, etc.
  • If you can, get a referral from a friend, family member, or colleague who has had a great experience.
  • Lastly, Google the business! Search for the business name in quotes on Google.com, you may just come across a forum post some where from someone telling you to beware!

Overall, you just need to be cautious when selecting your web designer. There are millions of design firms and freelancers who are willing to take on your project, the problem is finding the right one for you. Designing a website is a very fun and exciting time for a business and if you follow the tips above you won’t have any regrets!

Summer Decor

Summer Decor Create a Comfortable, Inviting Look

Tasneem Mirza

The summer heat calls for décor that is cool, fresh and casual.
This is perhaps why Shabby Chic ® achieved immense popularity
predominantly in the west coast. Shabby Chic ® a phrase coined
by Rachel Ashwell, a British designer-turned-Californian hit big
in the 1990’s. Till recently Shabby Chic ® was the sizzling
trend with retail stores, television shows, books, merchandise
and designers enthusiastically focusing on this décor.
Currently, the euphoria seems to have passed but this style is
still very much appreciated and demand remains strong because it
is a thrifty look, not requiring to spend thousands of dollars.
This type of design theme is synonymous with white. Think Shabby
Chic ® and what come to one’s mind: flea market finds, rose
pattern china, distressed white furniture, pastel floral, white
furnishings, white crisp drapes. You are right; the above
elements define and bring together the look. The popularity is
perhaps because it is most easy to accomplish with limited
budget and time. This décor is not only comfortable but also
easy to maintain specially with kids.

Create A Clean Bright Inviting Room For Summer You decide you
want your room to have a clean, laid-back look, which is
remarkably versatile and easy to live with. Start with
furniture; use mostly white furniture pieces that are widely
available in retail stores like Pottery Barn, Pier One Imports,
Wal-Mart or can even be easily located in flea markets or
thrifty antique stores. If budget restraint is holding you back,
you can utilize pieces that may be ready to be discarded; simply
paint them white. The paint transforms an old piece providing a
clean fresh appearance. Do you have a couch that looks worn out?
Easy fix; use white slipcovers extensively available at most
discount stores. The slipcovers can be machine washed thus
preventing anxiety with spills and other accidents

Keeping with the theme, accessories need to be distressed or
white. Lighting like a Lafayette distressed white sconce not
only adds additional light to the room but also creates a warm
cozy feel. To create a romantic ambiance, use a number of
candles and lamps. Look for candleholders, ornate candlesticks
painted white with bits of the old iron finish that characterize
this decor. The sconces, candleholders and many other distressed
white high quality accessories are available at
www.exquisiterugs.com retailing from $45.00

Add color and break monotony by using a needlepoint rug with
pink shades as shown in the image. The flowers on the
needlepoint rug provide a pattern. Throw some pillows on the
couch that complement the rug .The rug and pillows can be a pale
color palette. Beautiful decorative pillows and rugs are
available at www.exquisiterugs.com. The primary color is white
with dashes of pink pastel colors. However, instead of focusing
on pink or any other pastel soothing hue as a secondary color
you can integrate other colors, or even combine stripes or
paisleys.

Finally, the alluring look is never complete without fresh
flowers. Every one loves the appearance of attractive flowers,
or the smell of sweetly, fragrant ones. Pick some fresh pink
roses from your local grocery store and place them in a glass
bowl. Flowers are inviting, enchanting and moreover pleasing to
the eyes.

This décor is casual yet inviting and can be accomplished
inexpensively. Enhance this look with pillows and candles adding
lots of home accessories. Create a comfort-zone environment to
reflect your personal style and have your family and friends
enjoy the fresh décor all summer long.

Finasteride Creates Hair - and More

Many times, when a doctor determines a case of Male Pattern Hair Loss, he will prescribe Propecia, a popular hair loss treatment which has a variable success record.

Technically, Finasteride is the primary active ingredient and compound in the brand name drug, Propecia. Propecia has been noted as a successful treatment used to prevent Male Pattern Hair Loss, but its success record depends upon the source of information.

The Propecia home page, produced by the company itself, claims that nine out of ten men treated with the drug have improved or at least maintained hair.

Propecia is also the only pill that treats Male Pattern Hair Loss that has been approved by the FDA. The company claims that they put the drug through five years of experimental research prior to making it available to the general public in 1998.

It is interesting how some drugs gain FDA-approval and others that produce equally effective laboratory trials do not get the highly lucrative stamp of FDA approval. Perhaps Propecia had more aggressive lobbyists working the angles in Washington to lend it more support with the Federal Drug Administration.

It should also be seriously noted that the FDA does not have a spotless record
in releasing safe drugs to the general population. Their stamp of approval grows more questionable each season as new drugs promoted by lobbyists from major drug companies gain approval. A stamp of approval from the FDA is not without its political implications or influences.

All of the above reflects several facts that you should realize, as a patient and consumer of a drug, which was only tested for five years prior to its availability. Propecia has had negative results in 2% of its users, due to the hormonal imbalance. It is also a drug that can cause irreparable damage to an unborn male fetus. For this reason, women of childbearing age should have absolutely no contact with this drug in any form.

Propecia’s reputation within the established, traditional medical community may be excellent and shining, but when there is no guarantee of its success. as is the case with Propecia, you will be glad to know it isn’t the only proven-by-test treatment on the market, and not even the most effective one, either.

The company claims that most men experience positive results when they have taken the drug between three and twelve months. It is only productive for two areas of the head: the top of the head and the middle front area. It has not been useful in maintaining or growing hair at the temples or in a receding hairline.

While the company home page on the web claims that nine out of ten men experience positive results with Propecia, not all studies have reached the same conclusion.

According to Consumer Review.net, a popular and trusted website that reviews many brand name hair loss treatments and rates them according to their reported success, Propecia’s record is not so great. The Consumer Review says that 66% of the men who have taken it for Male Pattern Hair Loss reported positive growth. It presently costs around $230 for a three-month supply.

The latest news on Male Pattern Hair Loss reveals: there are cutting-edge alternative treatments that work very well. These are the ones strictly organically produced from flora and fauna of living earth. And they have a higher success rate than 66%.
