Market Your Book Through A Feature Story

Filed under:Living With Publishers — posted on @ 7:31 pm

Do you send out press releases? Have they brought you
financial rewards?

If not, you may want to rethink how to write a good one–one
that gets noticed, published, and most important, gets a feature
story. If editors notice and love your press release, they will
want to interview you for a feature story. A feature gets a lot
more attention than a news release.

Author’s Tip: Editors and radio v talk show producers want and
need human interest stories, and newsworthy stories. You have
what they need is solutions to problems their particular audiences
have. You have 7 seconds or less to impress them. So write an
outrageous headline. Then, be able to prove it.

Examples: The Antidote to Depression is Passion (for book
entitled “Passion at Any Age.”) or “Outsell the New York Times
bestsellers Without Breaking a Sweat!” (John Kremer’s headline
for his San Diego seminar above, www.bookmarketing.com) or
“Don’t Drive in Traffic, Don’t Look For a Parking Space, Don’t
Dress Up and Don’t Worry About the Weather!” Teleclass.
(Judy Cullins’ upcoming teleclass “How to Write an eBook or
Other Short Book–Fast!” www.bookcoaching.com)

Advantages of getting a feature story: You get more editorial
space, worth anywhere from $1500 to over $5000 depending
on which paper accepts you. This “free advertising” is worth
seven times as much as an ad because it implies the newspaper
endorses you.

Bonus Tip: Always ask the interviewer is there is any problem
with putting your ordering information into the feature. What
good is a feature if your audience can’t get in touch with you?
They usually say yes.

My Success Can Be Your Success

The San Diego Union responded to my press release, “Seven
Sure-Fire Ways to Sell More Books Than You Ever Dreamed
Of.” They gave me space worth $2000 of ad space this time.
Funny, they didn’t even interview me. The columnist created her
own story. She used this heading: “Workshop Guides Novice
Book Authors.” She said that seminar participants could be the
next John Grisham. In bold letters inserted in the column, she
wrote, “This workshop covers topics such as how to launch your
book’s first-year sales, how to get free publicity, how to jump
start a marketing plan and how to sell your book before it’s even
published.”

The Financial Rewards?

My phone rang off the hook for over a week. I took over 100
calls, taking reservations. I had far more people want the seminar
than I had room. The rest I invited to future seminars.

I collected over 60 email addresses. To each of them I sent my
monthly eNewsletter “The Book Coach Says” with a special
offer on one of my How to Write and Market Your Books Fast
Kits. I sold each participant a special report for $5, over $300 in
all. Other sales amounted to over $300. I was also paid for the
seminar by my sponsor. I got four new bookcoaching clients
worth thousands of dollars over the next few months. I got new
attendees to my free seminars on book writing–some of which
became clients.

That year, twenty-four of my clients published their books. They,
in turn, told others of their satisfaction. I became a respected
book coach who attracted through my web site, teleseminars,
eNewsletter and clients–many more clients!

At the same time, I have created several new books to help
writers who may not be able to attend my seminars or hire me as
their coach.

Take advantage of the press. Write an outstanding, outrageous
headline aimed at the editor. When it sparks an interest you will
get your feature story!

Exercise for Toddlers - How Old is Old Enough?

When is the best time to introduce children to exercise? The fact is that by the time children begin toddlerhood, they have already been exercising for the better part of a year. Raising their heads, turning over, sitting up, crawling, then walking. Before you know it, they are running around the house like football players souped up on too much Gatorade.

The problem is not what’s happening when they are 16 months old. It’s what’s happening when they are 16 years old. A typical teenager might wake up and then spend the rest of the day sitting. They sit on the bus to school, sit in class, sit in the lunchroom, sit on the bus back home, sit in front of the tv, sit in front of the computer, and if you are really lucky, they’ll sit down on the couch and tell you how their day went. Though unhealthy eating is definitely part of the reason America’s youth is overweight, lack of daily exercise is the main culprit.

What changes between the pre-schooler who wants to run all day and the teenager who’d rather gag than play a game of basketball in P.E.? I’d venture to say it is the lack of good role models during those years in between. If you want your children to grow up healthy and active, you have to set a healthy and active example for them. “Do as I say and not as I do” is the #1 road to failure. In the end, as much as it would pain them to hear it, most children will follow in the footsteps of their parents, so we need to show them how to live the right way.

The good news is that it’s easy to exercise, and it’s easy to get your kids hooked on it, too. My wife Alison and I exercise around our 2-year-old girls, Ainsley and Sierra, on an almost daily basis. Ali takes them with her to a “Baby Bootcamp” class designed for moms who’d like to get back into shape after pregnancy. On off days, she does Pilates videos at home where our twins can watch and imitate. I also do calisthenics workouts with the girls in the living room and playroom and, in warmer months, we take a daily multi-generational afternoon walk with the girls’ great-grandmother.

Because of this, our daughters have already learned that exercise is a normal and fun part of the day, and they do it now without any prompting from us. They’ll be playing in their room, and then we hear one of them yell, “exercise, exercise!” Peek in their room, and you’ll see them doing their own little versions of pushups, situps, squats, and jumping jacks, giggling as they go. They imitate what they see and they turn jump ropes into resistance bands for miniature tricep curls while steps become a great place to practice calf raises.

Even more fun is on Saturdays when we go hiking together as a family. They’re still too young to hike very far on their own feet (though they insist at times), but they’ve already grown an affection for being out in nature. Every rock and tree and stream is interesting to them, much more so than all the blinking lights and loud noises found at the local Chuck E Cheese.

By cultivating their interest in the outdoors, we make it more likely that they will want to spend their weekends out there, rather than sitting on the couch watching re-runs of Beverly Hills 90210. Now, what could be more rewarding as a parent than that?

So if you want your child to grow up healthy and active, don’t just ship them off to soccer practice. Get your own legs in gear, and show them that this is how adults should live too, not just kids. Set a good example now and your kids will follow naturally.

Simple Steps to Get Your Domain Name

The Domain Name System (DNS) enables people to navigate their
way around the Internet. Every computer that is connected to the
internet is identifiable by a string of numbers called an “IP
address” (IP stands for “Internet Protocol”). As the internet
developed so did the DNS, so that now a string of letters can
correspond to a particular IP address. This means that instead
of using a complicated sequence of numbers you can type
www.adomianname.com, which is a lot easier to remember.

No matter what sort of site you are intending building, you
should consider getting yourself a domain name. Your domain name
is your personal web address and can reflect anything you
desire, including your own name or the subject of your business.

There are several reasons why an internet business requires its
own domain name including: * A domain name makes your site more
credible and reliable * The URL of a domain name will never
change even if you change you website hosting, so that customers
are not needed to be informed should you change hosting. *
Choosing a good domain name will make your site more memorable
to your clients, so that people will recall your company easily
which spells more profits. * Advertisers and sponsors are more
likely to sponsor websites who have their own domain name. *
Your won domain name allows you to set up various email
addresses for specific uses, e.g. support@yourdomain.com and
sales@yourdomain.com

The organization that is responsible for maintaining and
co-ordinating the entire domain name system is called ICAAN. TO
register any domain name you need to use an ICAAN accredited
domain name registrar.

There are numerous domain name registrars and fees for domain
registration vary from $8.95 to $35+. Some web hosting companies
now offer a free domain name registration as part of their
hosting packages.

Registering your domain name is essentially a four step process
as follows:

Step 1: Carefully consider what domain name you would like, try
to make your domain name as concise as possible and specific to
the site you have in mind. Construct a list of alternative
domain names, in order of preference. This is because with the
huge number of websites in the Internet, some of your ideas for
the ideal domain name might have already been taken already so
the more names you can think of, the better.

When deciding on your domain name also consider the top level
domain TLD) extension you want. The TLD is the .com part of the
domain name domainname.com. There are a variety of domain
extensions, and the one you wish to use may well affect the
price you will have to pay.

The range of TLDs includes .com, .net, .org, .info and .name
(used with a personal name e.g. JezLacey.name). None of these
TLDs have specific requirements. In addition to these universal
TLDs there is also .biz, which is for commercial and business
use only. Finally, there are also country specific TLDs, which
can only be used by persons who are citizens and residents of
that country and by businesses and organizations present in that
country where domain extension is applicable, example include
.us (USA), .co.uk (UK) and .fr (France).

Step 2: Obtain the IP address or domain nameserver from your
hosting company. A nameserver is a special type of domain that
is used to identify a particular server. After registration you
will need this information in order to set up your domain for
use.

Step 3: Prepare for payment. The usual method of payment with
domain registrars is via a credit card.

Step 4: Apply for your domain name. You can use your web hosting
company to do this, or one of numerous accredited domain
registrars. Good examples include enom.com, the ever popular
GoDaddy.com, Dotster.com and many others.

When registering your domain name, ensure that you are the
registered domain owner. This important because a web host can
set themselves as the domain owner, and if they do, then you
have no say in what happens to the domain name. For example, if
you decide to transfer your domain to another registrar. For
this reason you should also ensure both the technical and
administrative contracts should be you.

When transferring a domain the new registrar will try contacting
the domain owner first, then if that fails the administrative
and then the technical contact. There have been cases where the
web host has registered itself as the administrative and
technical contact for a client. They can then make it difficult
for clients to move to other registrars by pending the move or
by even refusing. So, stay in better control and avoid this kind
of situation.

With these guidelines, you are now well equipped to register
your own domain name. As good domain names are getting more and
more difficult to find, if you already have an idea for a great
domain name, register them now before it’s too late.

Guide to Choosing a Custom Built Desktop Computer

Filed under:World Of Technology — posted on @ 6:35 am

You are probably familiar with the saying “different strokes for different folks”. Well, this phrase rings especially true when it comes to computers and their uses. While a computer may be perfect for one person, it may be useless to somebody else. This is because there are so many variations of what’s actually inside a computer. For this reason, many people are opting to have their computer systems custom built. If you are one of the many people contemplating a similar idea, you may be unsure as to where to start. In this article, we’ll present you with a guide to choosing a custom built desktop computer.

The number one appeal for people in choosing a custom built computer is price. It is often far cheaper to build a computer than it is to buy one new from a company. To get the most out of your custom built computer, you will first have to identify the key components that you absolutely need. This will help save you time and money. So, let’s take a look at the perfect custom built desktop computer for a variety of users.

In today’s world, many people use a desktop computer for only two reasons – word processing and internet surfing. If you fall into this category of user, you will have no problem choosing a custom built desktop computer. When deciding on a processor you basically have two choices; Intel and AMD. It is important to note that for simple web browsing and word processing, there is virtually no difference between the two processors. It is recommended that you go with an Intel Pentium 4 or an AMD Athlon. This is strictly a matter of preference, and you may want to do additional research to determine which is right for you. You will also want to determine the amount of memory you make available in your desktop computer. Again, for simple tasks such as these, anything more than 512MB will be more than sufficient. The rest of your system can be built with average secondary components, such as sound and graphic cards, and a CD/DVD drive.

If you happen to be a big-time gamer, you will need a computer with more RAM as well as better graphics capability. It is recommended that you upgrade to 1MB or 2MB of RAM. It will also enhance your game-play experience if you install a faster processor, perhaps even a dual core processor. These processors make it much easier to multitask while providing the ultimate gaming experience. Lastly, don’t forget to add a nice monitor and speaker system if you are building a computer geared towards gaming. This will also add to your overall enjoyment of your system.

The final type of user we would like to cover in this guide is the person who does a lot of work on the computer. This person will need a high-quality motherboard, which is always the most crucial element of any good computer. A motherboard helps your computer run at its optimum level, while ensuring all secondary components work properly. Somebody who stores a lot of data on their desktop computer will need to invest in a high-end motherboard. In addition, this type of user will also benefit from extra RAM, which will help in storing files.

This guide to choosing a custom built desktop computer should only serve as your first step in making a more informed buying decision. In addition to the aid of this guide, you should also perform thorough research and work with a trusted builder. It is important to remember that what you are putting into your custom built desktop computer will allow you to get the most out of it. Good luck!

I Don’t Remember Ordering This! 3 Basic Steps to Prevent Online Email Fraud

Filed under:Internet Security Resources — posted on @ 12:37 am

What do you do if you have received a suspicious email from a reputable company that you often do business with? Many online users are finding their inboxes packed with strange messages from Ebay, PayPal, their banks, credit cards, and even schools and hospitals. If you are receiving requests for information or further action that you don’t feel comfortable with, use the steps outlined below to help sort out the spam.

1. Don’t click it, use impressions - Impressions are used to tell the link location of an item without clicking through. A link in the body of a text email may look reputable at first. But if you wanted to see where the link will take you without clicking, just point your cursor over the word and the location will show up at the bottom of your brower window. If you don’t see anything at the bottom of your browser window, then your window may not be maximized (opened as large as it can.) Click the Box in the middle of the three icons at the top right-hand corner of your screen. (There should be one to minimize, open full screen, and close or X). If the link starts with anything other than the source it claims to be, don’t click. For example an Ebay buyers warning may say that it is from Ebay, but when you check the impression, it may say that it is from http://sales.site.XX.hpgjs (not an official ebay site.)

2. Don’t reply - This is self explanatory. Replying to the message lets the sender know that you are out there, and checking your emails. Since they are randomly spamming millions of emails (not knowing which emails are still in use), replying is an invitation for more trouble. While it is tempting to let them know that you don’t appreciate the emails, this will only encourage more activity. If you have a yahoo account or something similar, you can hit the “This is spam” button, and it will send it to the trash and flag the sender as a spammer.

3. Don’t unsubscribe - This is for reasons similar to above. If they offer a link to remove you from further mailings, they are wanting to know that you are an active user. Don’t take the bait.

The moral to the story is that if you are in doubt, you can do without. If you just can’t let the email go without taking some action, call your bank or other institution and verify that the request is bogus. And just remember that they aren’t picking on just you. The senders of fraudulent email send out millions of emails a day, it’s nothing personal.
