Extra Energy in Minutes a Day

“I need more energy!” Ashley blurted out. Tyler nodded his head understandably. Ashley had just finished pouring out her frustrations.

Each morning she dragged herself out of bed. Instead of feeling recharged, she felt like she had just finished swimming across the Atlantic ocean. After three cups of coffee to wake her up, she would drive to her job as a secretary.

Still groggy but mildly alert, she spent all morning filing papers, answering the phone, and making appointments. About 1:30 fatigue’s ugly claws would sink into her. Her productivity would be cut by 40% as she struggled through the afternoon.

Five o’clock would come and she would head home. Already feeling drained she would fight the evening battle. A quick supper and then off to evening classes. Ashley would try to fight off fatigue as she struggled to listen to the teacher.

Back at home the caffeine would flow from cup to mouth as she pressed to get her school work done. After hitting the pillow, the cycle would repeat itself the next day. Weekends were not much better.

Tyler said, “It sounds like your lack of energy is keeping you from enjoying life, preventing you from doing what you want to in life, and is making you feel depressed and discouraged.”

“Yes, that is exactly it”, Ashley tiredly replied.

Tyler asked, “Ashley, would you spare an extra 20 minutes a day if you knew it would increase your energy and make you feel great?”

“Of course!” Ashley exclaimed.

Tyler went on. “A year ago I was in a similar situation. I would get home from work tired and not feel like doing anything. Often I would get drowsy in the afternoon.”

“However, this has all changed. Now I get home from work and I am usually not tired. I sleep better at night and I am much more productive. I feel like a new person!”

Ashley leaned forward, “What is the secret?”

“There are several different secrets, but let me share the key one. Each morning I get up 20 minutes early and take a brisk walk outside or around my house. This wakes me up and gives me a shot of energy that lasts through the day.”

“If I don’t get to it in the morning, I walk during lunch break. Sometimes I may feel tired when I get home, so I take another short walk to get my energy flowing.”

“That’s work”, Ashley said disappointedly as she leaned back. “It would cut back on my sleep and I am already tired.”

“It is not work or a time waster,” Tyler countered. “It is an investment. You are investing a few minutes a day to gain back hours in extra energy. It is a simple choice: 15 hours of lack of energy or 20 minutes of walking and 15 hours of increased energy.”

Tyler went on and shared the benefits of walking that studies have discovered. They include:

=Reduced risk of colds, sickness, and the flu.
=Better rest at night.
=Enhance moods.
=Weight loss.
=Reduced risk for many health problems.

Ashley was now more interested and sat upright.

Tyler went on. “I urge you to take the one week challenge. Spend 20 minutes a day for one week walking. Observe the results and then decide if it is worth it.”

“OK!” Ashley excitedly replied.

Three weeks later, Tyler bumped into Ashley again. This time she was smiling and she had a spring to her step.

“I can’t believe it!” She exclaimed giving him a hug. “I feel better, I have more energy, and I am happier.”

“That’s great!” Tyler said as Ashley released her hug. “Let’s take a walk and I will share some more keys with you.”

“Awesome!” Ashley replied as they turned and started to walk down the street.

Surviving an American Church Split

In his book entitled “Exit Interviews,” William D. Hendricks writes something astonishing: “Almost all growth reported by North American churches today is the result of church switching and birthrate within the churches rather than conversion growth.”

He’s referring to transfer growth rather than new converts. In other words, it’s easier to go to a restaurant and order baked fish than to catch and clean our own.

Over 3800 American churches close their doors annually throughout the USA. The reasons for these closures run the gamut: real or perceived pastoral incompetency, strife, infidelity in leadership marriages, lack of financial integrity, doctrinal discrepancies, power struggles, persecution, congregational distrust or dissatisfaction (only 43% of Christians surveyed say they fully trust their church), choosing sides on any issue, and more. It’s no secret that church splits inflict damage upon the army of God. Things like divorce, death or sickness of a beloved leader, job transfers, college relocation, military reassignment and the like, wreak havoc upon the rank and file Believer. All of these situations leave the average Christian scratching his or her head in bewilderment as their brothers and sisters in Christ leave their fellowship, never to return.

Is it a “bad” thing for the members of a church congregation to scatter like this? At first glance, yes. But it depends on one’s perspective. Sure, it hurts, causing great emotional pain. Though it’s true, in accordance with Scripture, that if one smites the shepherd, the sheep will scatter, the “scattering of the sheep” has been happening since the early days of the church, often without any shepherd-smiting at all. Whether it was through the influential confusion brought upon the Church by the Judaizers (Galatians 1:7; 2:14; 3:1) or the persecution and subsequent scattering of the Church at the hands of the Romans under Nero’s reign during which Peter was martyred, God was never left wringing His hands, anxiously trying to figure out what His next move was going to be. The Jewish-Roman wars of A.D. 66-70 also contributed to the scattering of the saints.

For the first two centuries of the Church, the Apostle Paul and others journeyed forth across the known world to spread the Gospel. As a result of previous scatterings, while remaining true to their faith in Christ, scattered believers had been divinely positioned, ready to receive these traveling evangelists into their homes and give them provisions for their journey as they went forth preaching the Gospel and as the Kingdom of God continued to advance. Again, notice how the Church had been strategically placed, through persecution, to disciple new converts as they came into being. These people would not have been there to receive the evangelists, had they not been scattered by persecution or any other outside influence that had caused their once-cozy groups to split up. God is always in control.

WHAT MAKES A CHURCH SPLIT A BAD THING?
For starters, there’s the shipwrecked faith of the weaker Christians that so often occurs. Sadly, many Christians will abandon the faith altogether in the face of a Church split, disillusioned as they observe those whom they saw as “solid” Christian leaders suddenly picking up stakes and walking out the door. For anyone with shallow roots, Satan can use a church split to spiritually destroy the most vulnerable. For babes in Christ, seeing the world through rose-colored eyes, nothing on Earth can compare to the sweet fellowship from which they’ve found nourishment. Suddenly, boundaries become obscured. Friends become enemies. Brothers become adversaries. And another church-attender goes down with the ship.

Another unfortunate result of a church split is that most of those in pastoral roles will, statistically, never return to full-time pastoral ministry after they lose a church or are uncerimoniously drummed out of the corps. In fact, though they still maintain a relationship with God, the statistics are alarmingly high regarding those ministers who never even join another congregation, much less pastor another flock. Even in these instances, however, it is becoming more and more common to discover licensed and ordained ministers working in our midst as salesmen, floor managers, telemarketers, etc. Once again, God’s people have been strategically positioned to shine the light of Christ into the darkened life of their coworkers - those who spend more time at work than they do at home - and the Faith at Work Movement is spreading like wildfire. No one leaves their problems at home. A battered wife is still a battered wife at the office. A dad whose daughter turned up pregnant still has a broken heart while managing his crew. I served for 5 years as a workplace chaplain myself and found that ministry quite fulfilling and appreciated by the staff.

WHAT GOOD CAN COME OF A CHURCH SPLIT?
To answer this, we must first recognize that God is more concerned with our individual character than He is in our comfort. Satan and God have one thing in common, friends… they’re BOTH trying to kill us. That’s right. The only good Christian is a dead one! We MUST decrease in order for Jesus to INCREASE. In other words, the world must see more of HIM shining through our lives than they see of US. We have NOTHING to offer that matters in light of eternity besides He Who lives in us, the Spirit of God.

So, what are we made of? How strong are our Christian marriages? How strong is our church? How strong is the sweet fellowship of the saints? Rest assured, the dreaded “rub” will come. Everything WILL be tested. It MUST be tested. Tried by fire. The REFINER’S fire; the fire that causes the dross to rise to the top as the silver is purified, allowing the silversmith to see His own reflection in the product, testifying to its readiness for use. See, the Lord only builds with fireproof materials. As the hay, wood and stubble are burned into ashes, once the smoke clears, stone and silver are all that remain. So, burn, baby, burn! Jesus was tested and we will be, too.

That Christian who stands praying while his beloved church is crumbling, and remains faithful to the Kingdom of God REGARDLESS of what happens to a building made of brick and mortar, has received the highest order of strength, straight from the foundries of Heaven. It’s the grace of God. When unjust persecution comes, when unjustified crucifixion becomes our lot, we can call upon this grace to empower us so that we may remain true to the cause of our Christ, regardless of circumstances. Only the Spirit of God can keep us on course. We can not live vicariously through our godly, spirit-filled ministers. Our Christianity cannot be typified by our worship style, preacher’s gifting, size of assembly, cost of the sanctuary, or the scope of our pastor’s TV ministry. We must resist the deceptive thinking that God is so enthralled with our particular church group and its exciting ministries that He no longer sees us as individuals.

Part 2
HAVE IT GOD’S WAY
God says a really strange thing in Exodus 23:38. He states that He will drive out the enemies of Israel by sending hornets. In other words, God would arrange it so that the Israelites would not even have to fire a shot – their enemies would be “bugged” to death. Imagine an army of hornets, lined up, stingers at the ready, awaiting the directive of Earth’s Supreme Commander and Creator to drive out Israel’s enemies. Just crazy enough to work! But it’s an order that never came. Unfortunately, for the Israelites, it seemed too simple an answer to too big of a problem. So, in all their wisdom, they chose to fight their own battles rather than trusting in the same God that had delivered them from Egypt using flies, frogs, and then fed them with manna from Heaven and quail every night. The result? Nearly forty years later, it was their children, not they themselves, who would enter the Promised Land.

The point? God’s ways are not our ways. They’re much HIGHER than ours. Victory can be ours only when the battle is the Lord’s. He will share His glory with no man. In the midst of the pain and suffering inflicted upon one’s soul during a church split, imagine a seemingly silly thing like prayer serving as a balm for the soul. Yes! Pray for those who are siding against you! No one can hate the one they’re praying for – no more than we can despise a garden over which we might toil. We’ll chase away the rodents, we’ll water and weed and, ultimately, rejoice as the field bears fruit. But we can never hate that over which we toil in prayer. God is able to cause our greatest enemies to be at peace with us.

THIS IS A TEST!
Beware. The day of crisis is coming to your congregation or denominational camp. It HAS to. The thing MUST be tested by fire. When discord and backbiting, divorce and disharmony abound, how will we conduct ourselves? Amazingly, in my experience with church splits, I’ve noticed that both sides feel quite justified in pulling out the sacred Word of God and using it to bludgeon one another. The Scripture, intended to bring Life, now yields only death among the saints at the hands of all out civil war. Which group’s convictions are from the Lord? When is an issue important enough to abandon all attempts at unity and reconciliation? There was never any greater act of injustice than that which took place on Calvary, the day of our Savior’s crucifixion. Peter didn’t speak out against it. He wasn’t the only disciple not to utter a word in protest. Jesus was led “as a lamb to slaughter” and did not even attempt to defend Himself. Even God turned His head as He could not even look upon Jesus, Who became sin personified on the cross for our sakes.

In light of this truth, what critical, all-important, “paramount” issues are we debating over in the midst of our own congregations right now? Folks, our commission is to “go and make disciples.” If our focus were upon that and ONLY that, living our lives in such a way before men that we might win some, functioning as epistles read by all, there wouldn’t be time, or the need, to lobby and legislate against sin by political means. We wouldn’t have the energy to debate the color of the carpet. We’re supposed to be making the world jealous for what we’ve found in Jesus. Instead, we’ve allowed ourselves to be transformed from a counter-culture to merely another sub-culture with a political agenda, quoting verses at a world that doesn’t even acknowledge the Book from which those verses came.

They see our disharmony and they are NOT impressed.

GOING OUT OF BUSINESS, OR DIVINE CLOSURE?
Many years ago, in Fort Worth, Texas, I had the privilege of experiencing an official, God-ordained, church closing. In this situation, the pastor testified to receiving a vision from God while out of town at the same time the church leadership team was having dreams and confirmations, all pointing to the fact that God was instructing them to shut down their church. Both parties confirmed the testimony of the other that God was leading them to forever close their doors. Why was God leading these people to do such a thing? The people were happy, they were reaching their neighborhood, they loved each other and had a good thing going. What could have been the reason? Quite simply, the Lord had new work for each of its members to attend to.

The “closure” service was held in the presence of several other churches with whom this particular group had been relating to for some time, including the team on which I had served. Many people were eventually absorbed into these loving churches with which they had established a relationship. The pastor spoke; the other leaders, too. One elder told of how God enabled them to become debt-free in a very short period of time and even give their long-time, faithful secretary some severance money over and above her final check. Members of the congregation performed a one-act play, each actor displaying one of the many emotions that were surely being felt by the church’s soon-to-be former congregants.

Strangely, the number one comment I heard from the moist-eyed attendants was “I wonder how many OTHER churches should have closed their doors years ago?” Frankly, I wondered that myself.

Ironically, though I left the church I helped establish while it was in its seventh year to follow the call of God to my current home town, two years later, in its ninth year, on Easter Sunday, that church, too, had a closure service of its own.

Though many people from my own prior congregation have scattered, the fact is, as the lovely faces of scores of people flash through my mind, to my knowledge, nothing but good has come of these closings. I speak with many of them via email and telephone and I’m delighted by the praise reports I’ve heard. Interestingly, the financial blessing that has occurred in many of their lives has been the most obvious good to come of it.

WHOSE KINGDOM IS IT ANYWAY?
Folks, this thing we call Christianity is all about Jesus Christ. He alone is all anybody really needs, whether they know it or not. We can quote Scriptures till our halo burns out, argue and Scripture-whip the unbeliever silly. It’s futile for we cannot intellectualize a person into salvation.

If lost people need Jesus and Him only, guess what the Christian needs? Guess what the church needs? You guessed it…. CHRIST! And nothing else will satisfy. Not even a new carpet or re-striping the parking lot.

Jesus is faithful to complete what He began. He will never leave or forsake us. He didn’t come to establish a denomination or build a cathedral. He created this thing we call “The Church,” the ekklesia in Greek (meaning “called out ones”). As with creation in general, Jesus created it and He holds it all together.

Here’s a newsflash: No matter how overwhelming your personal or corporate church circumstances may appear to be, they’re going to get worse.

You read that correctly.

As we grow in our relationship with Christ and He increases in us, He also increases the scope of His dealings with us. Again, it’s character, not comfort that God desires for His kids. He wants to conform us to the image of His Son and nothing burns away human flesh like a baptism by holy fire.

When the seas of turmoil and confusion begin to swirl uncontrollably within your church, forget about digging into your church leadership’s bag o’ tricks. Instead, find your true north. We must determine how Jesus would have handled the matter (in a word, “crucifixion”), and do likewise. Here’s the battle plan: 1) love unconditionally everything with a pulse 2) relentlessly forgive, right and left, preferring others to ourselves 3) with wreckless abandon, empathize with others and strive for unity, and 4) focus entirely on Jesus, the Way, as the sole solution.

Find out what the opposition needs… and GIVE it to them! Go exceedingly beyond what they could have ever expected you to do. Then, hide and watch.

What God does next will amaze everyone concerned.

Part 3
CHURCH WARS: A KINGDOM DIVIDED
There are many reasons why church wars begin. Though there are times that the issues may be critical and involve the spiritual integrity of the church., generally, we choose sides over very insignificant issues.

For example, I’ve been told there is a church down South with a roof that’s green on one side and red on the other. This was done because some members of the church adamantly wanted green and other members adamantly wanted red. The disagreement was so intense that the church was going to split because of it. Finally, a compromise was reached. Unfortunately, the red and green roof is a monument to the community of the kind of silly disjointedness they might find if they become a part of the Body of Christ.

In relationships, whenever we see “the other side” as the problem, we’ve been deceived. People are never the problem. The PROBLEM is the problem. We attack each other when we should join forces in attacking the problem. Likewise, church problems are NOT the Church’s real problem. They are a symptom of a much deeper problem. The color of the shingles was not the issue tearing the church apart. Yes, it may have been the issue that caused the friction, but the church had other issues that needed to be addressed, and probably still does. Yet, in our desire to choose the path of least resistance, we opt for putting band-aids on that which requires major surgery. In essence, we prolong the agony of the inevitable. Usually, the underlining problems are very complex and have been in development for generations.

A congregation experiencing significant problems over “superficial” issues should seek outside, objective help. This is where the role of a church-planting apostle can be invaluable. If this is not part of your denomination’s organizational make-up, a trusted senior leader may serve just as well. Sadly, just as some struggling married couples are reluctant to seek help, most churches function in the same way. They see a request for outside help is an admission that they can’t handle their own problems. They see it as a sign of weakness rather than a potential position of empowerment. A church pastor or leadership team believes they should be about the business of helping others and don’t want to admit that they need help themselves. The sad reality is that, by NOT seeking help, those they thought they were helping may be hurt beyond repair as the result of a church split.

Though I pray God’s grace upon you should you ever face the ugliness of a church split, the reality is that most Christians will have this experience at least once. Whether you define “church” as the steepled building or whether yours is of the cozy “home group” variety, where humans are concerned, disagreements are bound to erupt. They’ll know we are Christians – not merely church-attenders- by our love for one another. When we who have the Bible and the Holy Spirit as our Guide and Teacher openly display to our community that we are unable to get along, what hope can we offer to the world? We must make them jealous for what we’ve supposedly discovered through our relationship with God through Jesus Christ.

Otherwise, the Church shall remain the #1 cause of atheism on planet Earth.

The Secrets Behind Hypnotic Selling

Hypnosis has been a taboo word for far too long. And many people see it in a mystical light. Yet what they do not realize is that hypnosis is a naturally occurring state experienced by everyone every single day. And it is only in recent times, that business professionals have discovered the power of hypnosis and boosted their sales and their businesses.

So what specifically is hypnotic selling? It is a process to trance your prospect with the product or service you offer as the solution to their need or want. If you are wondering if this is manipulation, it is not. To successfully become a hypnotic salesperson, it is imperative to have the customer’s interest at heart. Your focus should congruently be on servicing the customer rather than just closing the deal.

KNOW YOUR PROSPECT

Hypnotic selling works because it helps you listen and pay attention to the prospect in an entirely new way. You begin listening to not only their word choice, but also the type of language they use. The reason for success with this type of sales approach is because it was modeled after successful salespeople. It is exactly what top performers are already doing. So this takes the guesswork out of it and gives you specific tools and strategies to integrate into your own selling style.

YOUR PROSPECT’S LANGUAGE

Let’s take a closer look at the three possible types of language a prospect might use. Even though I’ll explain them as individual types, it is important to note that we incorporate all three styles, just at different times. When you reflect back the client’s language, you create immediate rapport. Also, learning a prospect’s individual style gives you keen insight into their model of the world, which then allows you to tailor your presentation.

“The Visual Prospect”

When you hear words like “see, appears, looks,” or phrases like “picture this, looks clear, bright future,” these are all visual words. This means we are accessing images in our minds to make sense of the words. These images may be still or in a movie-like sequence. They might be bright or dim, clear or fuzzy, in color or black and white. This kind of prospect will probably will move and speak quite rapidly.

“The Auditory Prospect”

There may be times when hear words like “listen, sounds, clicks,” or phrases like “sound okay, listen to this, rings a bell,” these are all auditory words. Here we are accessing sounds to make meaning of the words we hear. These sounds may be loud or quiet, clear or muffled, high or low pitched, pleasant or unpleasant in tonality. This prospect will speak more melodically.

“The Kinesthetic Prospect”

Sometimes you may hear words like “feel, grasp, grip, hold,” or phrases like “take hold of, heavy feeling, or gut response,” these are all kinesthetic or feeling words. This means we are accessing our feelings to make sense of the words. These feelings may be heavy or light, cool or warm, pressured or tingling, moving or still. This kind of prospect will speak and move quite slowly as he or she feels each word.

TEN TIPS ON EFFECTIVE HYPNOTIC SELLING

Executives and sales professionals alike always ask me what is the fastest way I can learn these skills aside from attending one of your Hypnotic Sales Trainings. And my reply is always the same; there is no substitute for training and getting the experience under your belt. However if there were ten tips that I would want to impart to you at a training or otherwise, it would be the following:

1. Find your own charismatic persuasion state. Before you ever approach a prospect make sure you are in an optimal state of mind. A quick mental exercise you can do is think of times when you were humorous, highly influential, enthusiastic, and confident, along with times when you were communicating effectively and absolutely certain about yourself. Step into a combination of these states before you take one step towards your prospect.

2. Step into their trance. When you go into a company you are stepping into their world, and their world has its own pace and its own rules. So make sure you meet them where they are. If it is a high energy place, increase your own energy level. If it is slow and laid back, slow down with them. This will allow you to step into the rhythm of their environment.

3. Establish Rapport. Once you meet your prospect, get rapport with them. Match and mirror their movements. Sit like they sit. Speak only as fast they speak. Surprisingly, people like themselves. And more importantly people like to see themselves in others. And by matching and mirroring, you are unconsciously saying to them, “I am as you are.” However, be subtle with this process. Underplay it and they won’t even notice it. Avoid matching or mirroring anything that is idiosyncratic to them such as a limp or a twitch. That kind of overt behavior might break rapport.

4. Bring them into your trance. When you feel you have established a fair amount of rapport, then it is time to bring them into your world. Get them to focus in on you, so they are no longer distracted by their surroundings. In the old days of hypnosis, a hypnotist would have you look at spiraling wheel. Hypnotic sales professionals create the same kind of trance like state with their presentations.

5. Get them into a good state. As their attention fixates upon you, they might still be in the state of mind of their last activity. If it was a pleasant, that’s fine, if not, then make sure you get them into a good state of mind (good mood). People make decisions inside of mental states. It is important to get your prospect into a great state of mind so when they decide to go with your product or service; they will always associate good feelings to that decision. This is the first rule to eliminate buyer’s remorse.

6. Find their emotional triggers. People buy with their emotions and justify and rationalize with logic. So it is imperative to discover their emotional reasons for buying. Is it to move away from the pain of not having your product or service (perceived benefit) or pleasure of having it? Or perhaps a little bit of both. Once triggers or hot buttons are discovered, hypnotic sales professionals utilize them to persuade the prospect to buying their product or service.

7. Become a storyteller. We all love stories. Through stories you can convince someone of anything because it is always done in a covert manner. Tell them stories of previous customers and how happy they were for using you or your service or product. Don’t say it like a testimonial; instead share it with them like a drama. Watch some TV; drama sells! Hypnotic sales professionals are master storytellers.

8. Be the first to bring up objections. When a prospect brings up a concern, it is called an objection. If you bring up the objection, then you can frame its positive attributes and make your product or service more compelling. Hypnotic sales professionals are quite familiar with the common objections associated with their industry, product, or service, and they prepare themselves ahead of time to inoculate their prospect from these objections.

9. Show them alternate futures. Use your stories to paint them a picture of what it would be like to not have your product or service. This goes back to discovering their emotional triggers. If they are moving away from the pain of not having your product or service, then really be descriptive with this possible future. If they prefer to move towards the pleasure of having your product or service; then paint them a picture of how great it will be when they are using your product or service. This is the second rule to eliminate buyer’s remorse.

10. Thank them and reinforce their decision. Always make sure you thank them because without them you would not be there. Customers are the lifeline to any successful business. Plant a seed for their next purchase and while they are still in that great mood, suggest they share their experience with their associates and friends. This is a hypnotic way to ask for a referral. Two things will happen as a result of their sharing of their experience. First, it will reinforce their good decision about using your product or service. Second, they will automatically enter into this great mood every time they talk about you, your product, or your service. And when their friends or associates inquire about the great mood, you will get free publicity. This is the third rule to eliminate buyer’s remorse.

WHERE DO YOU BEGIN?

One begins to master hypnotic selling by starting with the first tip and really getting that down well. The process to master hypnotic selling is the same way you would eat a watermelon; one bite at a time. The key here is to integrate it into your own style, not to become a robot. Add your own flair once you have mastered each skill set.

After you practice each tip, you will notice an apparent increase in your sales, improved relationships with old and new customers, and more referrals. Now as you are starting to understand the secrets of top performers using hypnotic selling, consider what it would be worth to you. Calculate the value of the life of a customer. Aren’t these skills worth your investigation?

If you aren’t sure if I used hypnotic selling techniques throughout this article you may want to read it again!

The Rippling Effects of Chlorinated Water

Filed under:Life Of Health — posted on @ 4:46 pm

The water that comes out of your kitchen faucet carries with it a steady stream of chemical by-products that are known to cause cancer, heart disease and reproductive harm. Since the turn of the century chlorine has been used to treat the nation’s drinking water, virtually eliminating disease causing bacteria and viruses. When first used in 1908, it was viewed as the perfect treatment, one that kept us free of waterborne illnesses while creating no ill effects on our health. So much more is known about chlorine these days, and the error of our ways is beginning to become apparent with the increase in heart disease and cancer related deaths.

The problem with chlorine is actually in the by-products, called organochlorines, created when it mixes with organic materials, such as leaves, algae or even human skin. There are thousands of different chlorine by-products, and very few of them have been studied for safety or are being tracked in our water reserves. While these by-products don’t cause immediate illness, such as typhoid or dysentery, they have long term effects that are not as easy to study or link to any one health ailment.

There are several classes of by-products, the most studied being trihalomethanes (THMs), which occur when chlorine combines with methane. A common THM found in water is chloroform, a known carcinogen. As a matter of fact, a large number of THMs are known or suspected carcinogens, but they are allowed to remain in our water at minimal levels, even though research has shown those “minimal” levels are capable of causing cancer.

Chlorine and its’ by-products enter the body through ingestion, inhalation and absorption of the skin. It is theorized that 2/3 of the body’s chlorine by-product intake occurs in the shower. When the water is heated up, the by-products become vaporized and are thereby easily inhaled. The hot water also serves to enlarge the skin’s pores and allows for easier absorption through the skin.

Chlorine by-products do not break down quickly and are generally stored within the fatty tissues of the body, where they can alter DNA, suppress immune function and interfere with natural cell growth. The by-products also destroy the intestinal flora (“good” bacteria) that protects the body from pathogens and generate free radicals that can cause cancer.

Evidence of this was displayed in a study conducted in Hartford, Connecticut finding that, “women with breast cancer have 50% to 60% higher levels of organochlorines in their breast tissue than women without breast cancer.”

Chlorine by-products have been attributed to causing several types of cancer including, cancer of the bladder, liver, rectum, and colon. A study at the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, Maryland concluded that, “people living in areas served by chlorinated water have twice the risk of contracting cancer,” than those who do not.

Free radical damage caused by chlorinated by-products have been linked to heart disease and atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries). In his book Mega Nutrition, Richard A. Kunin, M.D. explains, “…even in minute quantities sufficient to kill germs, chlorine can undermine the body’s defenses against atherosclerosis. Chlorine in drinking water creates electrically charged molecules called free radicals… that can damage the blood vessels and create the environment for plaque formation.”

A growing number of studies have also linked chlorine and chlorine by-products to reproductive harm. In 1998, the California Department of Health conducted a study that established a link between chlorinated drinking water and miscarriage. They found that pregnant women with high exposures to chlorinated drinking water nearly doubled their risk of miscarriage from a rate of 9.5% to 16%. Other studies have linked chlorinated drinking water to serious birth defects and low birth weight.

In spite of the overwhelming amount of evidence that chlorine is not as safe as once thought, the EPA continues to deny that there is a causative link between chlorinated water and health effects. Opponents of chlorine’s use in treating drinking water suspect that the EPA’s denial stems from the sheer cost that it would have to undertake to implement a safer treatment system.

In 2002, England began using Ozonation to treat the country’s drinking water. The process works by adding the same kind of ozone that is found in the atmosphere to the country’s drinking water supply. Once the ozone has been added, an electric charge is sent through the water, effectively killing all disease causing microbes. Ozonation is actually twice as effective as chlorine at eliminating bacteria and is chemical free, creating no harmful by-products.

While a few cities across the US have begun using Ozonation, most are still relying on chlorine to treat their drinking water. Individual ozone water treatment units can be purchased for your home and are relatively inexpensive. Reverse osmosis, micro filtration and distillation filters are not effective because they do not eliminate the harmful by-products of chlorine.

Home Buyers Search On-line First, Before Making a Deal

“For Sale by Owners” AKA FSBO (pronounced “Fizz-boes”) are taking control of the sale of their own homes!

Statistics show that its probably one of the best ways to go. So-called “Internet buyers.” who comprised only 28 percent of the market in 2000, accounted for 45% of the market in 2002 and may now be in the majority. The National Association of Realtors recently reported that for the first time, more home buyers nationwide used the internet instead of newspaper ads as a key information.

  • 66 percent of the buyers surveyed reported using the internet, compared to 49 percent of buyers who say they used newspaper ads.

Nation wide real estate has increased 20—30% since 2000 but the cost of listing with a real estate agent has either increased or has been unchanged.

The fact is that web-surfing home buyers are changing how Canadians are buying real estate, and changing the real estate industry. With a flood of information Canadians are becoming much more studious in their real estate buying techniques and starting to chip away at the 6% commission that real estate brokers collect on each home sold.

Canadians have come to realize that they cannot continue to throw their equity out the window by giving thousands of their hard earned dollars to agents. For a majority of Canadian citizens their homes are their families largest assets. Being a “For Sale By Owners” AKA “FSBO” is simply good money managing, It puts you in control of one of your largest assets, and Its where the real estate market is going with today’s technology.

The Advantage of State Auctions

Looking to buy a used vehicle with a tight budget? Try State Surplus Agency auctions where you will find many well-maintained vehicles being place on the block from as little as $500. Dodge Rams were sold for as low as $200, a 1983 Jaguar for $3,599 as well as many others at an absolute bargain! Most of the vehicles have been retired after 5 years or 60,000 miles. And unlike cars sold at the police or sheriff’s auctions these cars are usually in excellent conditions as they were previously owned by government officials.

Tips for scoring yourself a real deal are to arrive early and stay late because the best items are found at either the beginning or at the very end of the auction. Premium bargains can usually be found on rainy days during rainy weather as less people make it to the auctions on days like this. When your target item goes up for bid, try to place the starting bid yourself. Keep the bidding low and go slow, you don’t want to get caught up in the frenzy of the bidding war and end up spending too much for the car. And last, keep in mind that with auctioned car, you have to pay a buyer’s premium which could bring the cost over market value so be careful.

If you are looking to buy a Ford car, I advise you to do your homework. Don’t forget to check out our

Artistry, Espionage and the Triumph of Toile

Filed under:The Gardening Way — posted on @ 10:34 am

(ARA) - Toile, the subtly elegant printing technique that tells stories in engraving-like detail, traveled a fascinating history of its own to become the enduring favorite of designers, decorators and homeowners everywhere.

Toile, pronounced twal, is an abbreviation of toile de Jouy. The name comes from Jouy-en-Josas, France, where the first plant to commercially produce this type of printing was established in 1760. The initial toile was a monotone, one-color print, rendered in intricate, engraving-like detail on a white or cream-colored background.

Typically, the images were scenes that told a story. Drawings might retell a myth about Roman gods, or chronicle ships’ sailing adventures, or simply depict days in the life of a French farming family.

The triumph of toile as today’s decorative darling is far from simple, however. When Christopher-Philippe Oberkampf opened a print shop in France in 1760, reverse images for toile prints were carved into wooden blocks. Ink was applied to the blocks and then transferred by hand to un-dyed cotton. Only the rich and the royal, including Louis XVI, could afford the results of this painstaking process.

Later, in a stunning example of industrial espionage, Oberkampf discovered in England the secrets of etching designs onto a copper-plate roller. He and his brothers wrote the directions for this process on cotton percale fabric, using an alum solution tinted with red dye, and then dipped the fabric in vinegar to render the writing invisible until after they crossed the Channel. By utilizing their stolen information, the Oberkampfs significantly expanded both their market and their fame. Napoleon himself bestowed on them the Legion of Honor.

Still later, in an unrelated but ironic twist of fate, British troops destroyed Oberkampf’s factory in Jouy-en-Josas. Brokenhearted, the printmaker died shortly afterwards.

Today, toile triumphs, but only the engraving-like quality of the printing method remains true to its original. It is not uncommon for contemporary toiles to be printed in more than one color and appear on a colored background. The themes now encompass just about any subject that strikes a wallpaper or fabric designer’s fancy.

An exotic combination of parrots, pineapples and palm fronds, for example, grace a tropical pattern in the Vintage Tuscany wallpaper and border collection from S.A. Maxwell Co.’s LV Emmert Studio. This theme enhances all design styles, from contemporary to traditional, and is especially well suited to today’s popular bamboo and Oriental furnishings. It exemplifies toile’s ease of use in all settings.

A more traditional toile appears in Winnetka, another collection from L V Emmert. This features a classic repeat of laurel leaves, each underscoring etched renderings of a rooster and other French country scenes. The slightly crackled background adds the patina of age.

In another toile, small birds flutter among flower-bedecked boughs, all in a blue and white pattern that looks as if it were etched in ink on a rich, cream-colored background. This is from Kenilworth, a collection from Maxwell’s Patricia Kent Studio, and was based on a document antique fabric pattern.

Because toile patterns can make an elegant design statement all by themselves or provide a unifying backdrop for other patterns in a room, we include at least one toile in many S.A. Maxwell collections. On wallpaper, the simplicity of images, rendered in the characteristic etched form of a toile, brings pattern to a wall without interfering with other design elements.

From a distance, toiles first emerge as a pleasing overall background design. On closer look, as these subtle images come into focus, they engage the onlooker and become as interesting as an engraved art print. Few other design techniques can accomplish the dual role of creating both an unobtrusive, elegantly discreet setting for all of the objects and furnishings in a room, and, at the same time, lend distinctive, standalone art to that interior.

Try on a toile by locating a retailer that carries the Vintage Tuscany and Winnetka collections from the L V Emmert Studio division of S.A. Maxwell Co., or Kenilworth from Maxwell’s Patricia Kent Studio. To find the retailer nearest you, call 847-932-3700 or visit www.samaxwell.com on the Internet.

Lawnmowers Hot Engines Starting Difficulties

—————————————————

Cold weather might be the most typical known problem relating lawnmowers starting difficulties. Your mower could cause problems as well when the engine is hot. Most garden owners using traditional gas mowers realize that they don’t start as smoothly as it should when the engine is hot. What to do when this problem happens? We describe how to overcome this trouble and what to do about it.

What are the reasons by which hot engines don’t start as they should be? Well, basically starting engine problems are based on the fuel. If the engine has been working longer than it does normally, it becomes too hot and the fuel can’t circulate correctly. That is caused by the way in which vapor blocks it, and then the engine won’t start as it should. Sometimes, engines don’t start at all forcing some lawn mower parts work much harder than they use to do it, increasing the chance to break them down.

Once the a mower engine has started, it will gain temperature until it was shut off. While a mower or lawn tractor engine is working, is when the highest volume of vapor circulates around. Therefore, this is the time during more chances to obstruct the engine are bigger too. We would suggest in not working during extremely hot temperatures. If you have been working in a hot weather, and have turned off the engine, you might experience a starting problem, please wait a few minutes until the engine is totally cold, then try to start it back again.

—————————————————

What other problems could it be?

—————————————————

Mower starting problem might be for many reasons. The most known is due to hot temperatures, which has been detailed above. However, other facts would affect to the engine, avoiding it to start as it should be. It’s well known when summer approaches that gas refiners choose other fuel blends. Usually, they use offer lower volatility fuels instead of higher ones. It is caused by the way in which hot temperatures carries fuel to evaporate easier. The higher volatility fuel the more vapour is created, and therefore much more engine blocking chances exist.

Story As a Business Tool

Filed under:Living With Publishers — posted on @ 7:18 am

When I was a magazine editor, I worked with a freelance writer who could turn deathly-dry subjects like business insurance and corporate taxation into compelling, easy reads. How? By using tools of the fiction writer’s trade.

Whether he interviewed a source in person or on the phone, he amassed an amazing array of details. Then he would craft a narrative–complete with scene-setting details, dramatic tension, and sometimes even dialogue– that would hook the reader after the first five words. His articles would begin something like this: “Even from the 28th floor of the Boring Building in downtown Metropolis, John Doe can hear the rumble and roar of I-89 as it threads through the cloverleaf three blocks south of his office. He knows that many of the Clueless Company’s eighteen-wheelers travel the road every day bearing widgets and whats-its to ports and airports across the country, but Doe never pauses to worry whether they’ll jackknife and spill their precious loads. That’s because Doe, the controller of CC, recently upgraded his company’s liability policy to guarantee $1 billion against losses.”

Many writers would have begun the article with a summary of the issue or an assertion–”It’s important to have liability insurance”– and piled on the facts and statistics. While it’s still possible to write a good article this way, which one would you rather read?
Whether you’re writing an article, marketing collateral or a sales letter, stories will make your copy come alive like nothing else will. And when you can engage your reader, you’re one step closer to winning him over. Note that for simplicity’s sake I’m using the terms stories, anecdotes, and narratives interchangeably–and loosely. However you parse them, they all paint word pictures that make a bull’s eye for our emotional right brains. Countless neurological studies confirm that people process information better when it’s presented in story form. When not connected by narrative, facts, statistics and logic have to go through too many filters before they trigger a visceral response.

You don’t need to have the talent of a Hemingway to use story forms in business communication. Consider the experience of Robert McKee, a Hollywood screenwriting guru who has recently started attracting executives, entrepreneurs and office workers to his wildly popular $600 Story Seminars, according to Dan Pink’s fascinating new book, “A Whole New Mind.” Here’s Pink quoting McKee: “Although businesspeople are often suspicious of stories…the fact is that statistics are used to tell lies and damned lies, while accounting reports are often BS in a ball gown. . . If a businessperson understands that his or her own mind naturally wants to frame experience in a story, the key to moving the audience is not to resist this impulse but to embrace it.”

I’ll concede that I don’t always practice what I preach. But I’ve found that thinking in terms of story right from the get-go helps me discover what I want to say much more easily than if I were relying solely on expository techniques. Of course, stories require more research. Yet putting in a little more time on the front end can pay dividends at the keyboard.

That said, here are some research tips to help you discover and create stories that will help influence your readers:

1) When interviewing a source, ask them to recall the funniest or most surprising experience they’ve had with the subject at hand. It’s helpful to give interviewees the questions in advance so that they’ve had time to recall anecdotes. Remember to ask for elaboration so that your writing will be full of concrete details. Or you can create your own anecdote by having an interaction with the subject and writing about it, or watching the interviewee relate with his or her employees or public and then retelling it in your copy. And don’t overlook photos as a memory trigger: Ask questions about pictures displayed in the office or ask to see a photo album or scrapbook. There’s a story behind every picture, as you’re sure to find out.

2) Befriend your company’s librarian, archivist or unofficial historian. Sometimes the only thing it takes to unleash the floodgates of memory is a little curiosity on your part. You could end up with enough anecdotes to last you through several writing projects.

3) If you don’t have company testimonials, seek them out. Use short versions for your Web site and brochures and longer ones involving scene-setting details–exactly how a product or service helped your customer–for annual reports and sell sheets. If you already have a file of testimonials, re-interview these customers/clients–expressing your continued gratitude, of course–and try to elicit some detailed stories.
