How to Sense Low Levels of Asbestos in Your Daily Environment. (Part II)

Most people find it difficult to believe that a tiny dust material, too small to see, can cause such havoc with the human body.
As a construction worker, I may have an advantage in identifying the materials which shed this residue, but this also tends to make me more vulnerable to it’s effects. This, in turn gives me the incentive to do what it takes to avoid it or possibly shed it myself if I should accidentally make contact with it from any number of situations.

How do I determine that I’ve accidentally contacted the residue?

To start with, what you have to understand is ” this material is light enough to stay airborne for long periods of time, it is very dry and staticy, it can leave a bitter-salty taste in your mouth, it can be irritating to the eyes and sinuses and it attaches to the hairs on your skin and head leaving a staticy-iching feeling over your entire body.( Sometimes this sensation is subtle and other times it’s pronounced, depending on the type of asbestos material it came from and the amount of dust you’ve contacted.)” Combined with the many chance encounters of this material, this presents an interesting challenge for which few are willing to embark.

If you are ready to take on this challenge, the first step in getting relief from this sensation requires removing and isolating the clothes you were wearing and showering thoroughly. After dressing, the next logical step is to backtrack and identify the items and locations that you made contact with between the time you made the contact with the residue and the point where the clothes were shed. If these were solid surface items, they can be wiped clean with disposable towels and either water or a spray cleaner such as orange cleaner. If they were cloth surfaces such as cloth car seats or furnture, the simplest method is thorough vacuuming with a vacuum cleaner which includes a hepa filter.

Next comes the choice of disposing of the clothes or trying to clean them. If you try to wash them in a clothes washer, one washing wil not do it. Also, it’s important to wash them separately from other clothes. Cotton clothes will eventually clear up, where polyester or nylon may never come clean of this residue.

Given the previous information to be true, one soon sees the logic in wearing only cotton clothes and being aware of the path you take after contacting any suspected situations.

If this routine doesn’t interest you in the least, you probably have no incentive to follow it.

If you suffer from any of the following maladies which I’ve been able to associate with an unfortunate contact with asbestos dust, you may want to try this routine just to see if the condition clears up.

Any entry of this dust to the air passages can cause irritation, such as, the sinuses, notrils, eustation tube, back of throats, broncial tubes or even down to the stomach. Consequentally, illnesses, such as, sore throats, strep throat, toncilitis, sinus infections and inner ear infections can all have their beginnings with unrelenting irritation caused by asbestos residues. Irritation to the broncial tubes can be the beginnings of broncitis and pneumonia. A sour or sore feeling in the isofigus, which may mimic heart burn, is another result of exposure.

The eyes and outer ear can also suffer from exposure causing
pink eye and blurring, as well as outer ear infections. This is another moist area where a fine dust can be desolved into body fluids. As these fluids dry out, the fine asbestos residue is left destroying the surounding tissue causing irritation and immune system responses.

The largest surface affected is the skin. Many different effects can be seen, depending on the location. The face and shoulders commonly are affected by acne, if that individual is prone to it. Asbestos fibers become embedded in the large pores
and cause constant irritation and eventually infection by the acne bacteria which is commonly on the skin. Other areas of the face where contact with a hat, pillow or even ones hair that is embedded with some level of asbestos residue can show signs of acne. Other areas may have anything from dry, cracking skin to contact dermatitis or even yeast infection.

I’ve also found athelete’s foot to follow an accidental walk through an area recently stripped of asbestos tiles. The shoes become embeded with the substance due to the amount of asbestos dust left in the mastic adhesive and porous concrete. Wearing these shoes causes the skin of the feet and toes to become vunerable to fungus infection, such as atheletes foot. Some portion of this dust makes it’s way up to other parts of the body as well, each with their own story of immune system compromise.

This is just another day in the life of body exposed to low levels of asbestos residues encountered in any number of situations we should avoid when they are recognized.

Rookies To Watch In The NFL

Like so many millions of young sports-crazed boys, in my formative years I was a baseball card fanatic. But one thing that I never understood about baseball cards is why rookie cards were always worth more money than any other cards. I bring this up, because I’m equally confused when it comes to rookie contracts in the NFL.

Why is it that rookies — players who haven’t accomplished anything in the league are paid exorbitant sums of money and put in positions to hurt their teams by holding out? Case in point: two-time Super Bowl MVP Tom Brady signed a contract extension that included $32 million guaranteed, perennial All-Pro and future Hall of Famer Orlando Pace signed an extension with $18 million guaranteed, and rookie quarterback Alex Smith - who was a one-year wonder at the football factory that is Utah, and who hasn’t taken a single snap in a regular season game - signed a contract that guarantees him $24 million. Curious.

This year featured more first-round holdouts and more acrimony in NFL rookie negotiations than any in recent memory. At one point, players like David Pollack, Adam Jones, Roddy White and Cedric Benson were projected starters for their respective teams. However, due in part to their extended holdouts, as of right now none of those players figure to crack the starting lineup come Week One.

The irony here is that these players are squabbling over a slight increase in money now - and by slight I mean in percentages, not in actual figures - and by doing so jeopardizing their long-term earning potential. By holding out, these rookies are missing valuable acclimation time in training camp, they’re alienating themselves from their coaches, teammates and fans, and earning reputations as people who are difficult to work with. Furthermore, the track record for rookies that hold out more than 10 days is a train wreck.

The NFL is in the middle of negotiating a new collective bargaining agreement. I wouldn’t be surprised (and am actually hoping for) a change that institutes a rookie pay scale, similar to what the NBA has in place. In the NBA system the contracts’ length and worth are figured on a graduated scale and preset based on when players are picked. Starting this in the league would effectively end NFL rookie holdouts, and help ensure that more money is invested in accomplished NFL players as opposed to the potential-laden first-round picks that have a hit-or-miss history in the league. I don’t see where the NFLPA would have a problem with this, given that about 80 percent of the players in the league weren’t No. 1 picks and a pay scale would mean more money for them.

Here’s a list of 10 rookies that I expect to have a definite, tangible impact on their team’s fortunes this season, for good or ill. I would wager that of the 10 teams that these players represent, the ones that get the most production from their first-year players will be the ones still alive in January.

J.J. Arrington, RB, Arizona

The Cardinals are the trendy sleeper pick this season in the weak NFC West. Arrington follows in the footsteps of the NFL’s leading rusher, Emmitt Smith, who retired after the 2004 season. That sounds more dramatic than it really is, since it’s not like Smith actually did anything in Arizona. Arrington topped the 2,000-yard mark at Cal last fall, and has the speed and shake to be a productive scat back. However, he is small (5′9” 214 lbs.), he has fumbled twice in two preseason games, and it remains to be seen whether he can take an NFL pounding.

Derrick Johnson, LB, Kansas City

So far I’ve heard from several sources that this kid is just an animal. He was by far and away the best defensive player in the draft, but he slipped to No. 15 and fell into the Chiefs’ lap. Johnson will join Sammy Knight, Patrick Surtain and Kendrell Bell in a retooled K.C. defense. If you can find anyone dumb enough to take your wager, bet your mortgage on Johnson as the Defensive Rookie of the Year.

Heath Miller, TE, Pittsburgh

The Steelers have never really utilized the tight end in the passing game (average of 18 catches a year since 1998). In fact, they’d rather have a sixth lineman than a pass catcher in the TE slot. Miller could change all of that. With sure hands and outstanding speed, Miller could slice up some seams in the defense this fall. Plexico Burress is gone so Pittsburgh is going to need other playmakers to step up. Also his size (6′5” 256) will make him an inviting red zone target.

Mike Nugent, K, New York Jets

Doug Brien converted 83 percent of his kicks in 2004, but was exposed the after a pair of missed game winning field goals missed against Pittsburgh last January. Tough crowd. Enter the kid. Nugent won the Lou Groza Award last fall and was prolific at Ohio State. He was deemed worthy of a second round pick by New York, the third highest a kicker has ever been drafted. New York’s style lends itself to a lot of close games. That means Nugent will face plenty of clutch kicks this season.

Matt Jones, WR, Jacksonville

The Jags pick of Jones 21st overall may have been the shocker of the first round in April. He is a converted quarterback out of Arkansas, and will be expected to step right in and contribute. Last year’s No. 1 pick Reggie Williams had an awful rookie season, and besides 36-year-old Jimmy Smith the Jags don’t have much of a receiving corps. Byron Leftwich could be ready for a breakout year, but if that’s going to happen than Jones is going to have to take advantage of the mismatches (he’s 6′6”, 242) he’ll most likely face.

David Pollack, LB, Cincinnati

When Pollack was at Georgia, the coaches used to have to take him off the practice field because the offense just couldn’t get anything done when he was out there. He was that dominant. The Bengals are hoping that he can make the adjustment to linebacker in their 3-4 alignment. Pollack held out for 20 days, which could stunt his growth in the early part of this season. However, he will have the benefit of playing alongside college teammate Odell Thurman. Thurman was picked up in the second round by Cincinnati and is also projected as a starting linebacker for the league’s 26th-rated run defense.

Alex Barron, OT, St. Louis

What a spot for Barron, college football’s Outland Trophy winner last fall, to be in. He gets to apprentice next to Adam Timmerman and on the same line as Orlando Pace. Barron not only held out, which pissed off head coach Mike Martz, but he missed his first practice after he signed with the team - unexcused. You don’t want to get in Martz’s doghouse. Just ask Kyle Turley.

Cedric Benson, RB, Chicago

As a Bears fan I’m disgusted with this whole situation. As if it wasn’t bad enough that we had to stare in horror at his freak out on draft day (you know, when he started panting, sweating, babbling and sobbing during his interview with Suzy Kolber after he was selected fourth by the Bears) now we have to wait for him to put his avarice aside and become a team player. He can make it up to me with 1,000 yards and 10 touchdowns.

Roddy White, WR, Atlanta

White held out for the first two weeks of camp and, wouldn’t you know it, he got injured (ankle) in his first preseason game after his return. I’m not saying that his injury had any physical link to his hold out I’m just saying it’s bad karma. Some in Falcons camp insist that Peerless Price is still the No. 1 receiver in Atlanta, but still others surmise that he’s going to get cut to free up cap space. The jury is still out. But it’s clear that big things are expected from White, the second wideout Atlanta has taken in the first round in two years (Michael Jenkins in 2004).

Fred Gibson, WR, Philadelphia

OK, so T.O. being back in camp takes the onus off Gibson. However, who knows how long that whine ass will hold up this season. Regardless, the Eagles lack a No. 2 option, and rumor has it that Gibson has looked really good this August in camp. He was labeled as soft during his time at Georgia, but he could blossom under the guidance of a team player like Owens (just kidding).

Honorable mention: Cadillac Williams, RB, Tampa Bay; Erasmus James, DE, Minnesota; Jammal Brown, OG, New Orleans; Daryl Blackstock, LB, Arizona; Roscoe Parrish, WR, Buffalo, Chris Henry, WR, Cincinnati.

Crouching Tiger Flying Squirrel

Now last summer I had seen Crouching Tiger Flying Squirrel. Three against one running up and down the Pine Trees. Well falling down. What was amazing was they were still fighting as they fell, with no fear. They just figured that a twenty foot Pitch Pine tree, on average, would have anywhere from 11 to 21 branches. If they miss six they can grab at any of the remaining 15 or so as they fell and run back up the tree to start this free fall Kung Fu once more.

Now I thought that was amazing.

Until this Spring.

Did you know that squirrels in heat turn bright red. I did not. Also that modesty in the female of the cuts against species. Also the single mindedness and intense focus of men, when they are getting laid that is. I caught two squirrels in a tree. She kept giving me the look of death. She turned upside down to stare at me to leave, then went around the tree to the top, still seeing me watching, fell through the remaining fifteen branches to catch three from the ground, and run away to a more private perch. With the male still pumping away upside down, turning around the tree, ignoring me, falling a great height, and being carried across the forest with single pursuit.

Now that was amazing.

Expectation and Intention – How Adding These Can Explode Your Life

Filed under:New Age Infos — posted on @ 10:02 pm

Expectation and intention – How adding these two simple principles to your life can explode it and move you forward faster!

When you expect something you hope in it that it will happen regardless of the obstacles or interference. You expect it to happen, there for you know that it will happen because you will work as smart as possible to make it manifest in your life.

Then there is intention, when you intend something, you put the intention out into the universe and have faith that it will happen. It is an intention of what you want, it doesn’t always happen but it holds an underlying intuitive force that decides for itself and for you whether it will manifest your desires for you.

So there are the two, expectation and intention. Now by themselves they are fine, they work. But when you add intention with expectation you have power, momentum, and drive. New possibilities arise, and your life takes a forward motion.

Why would these two facets make your life explode and boom with power?
By mixing the expectation of the outcome that you will create your desires with the intention that it will come about. You are mixing the intent with the expect, when these two are aligned with your spirit and the spirit of the collective mind you can be sure that your life will become more alive than ever before.

In order to develop your intention and your expectation I dare you this week to notice where the focus of the two of these lies. Are you focusing on what you want or don’t want? Where is your expectations placed? Could you raise that bar, to expect more?

Just notice, be your own observer – The rest of the answers will unfold as your path becomes more clear.

The Old Fashioned: Two Recipes of an Underrated Classic

Like many mixed drinks, the Old Fashioned has a number of variations and a history.

It is one of the few cocktails that survived from the days of the Martini and the Manhattan. When prepared well, it is a full-bodied, delicious drink. It was one of my mother’s favorites as a young woman in the 1940’s and still carries the glamour of the era.

Accounts agree that the Old Fashioned originated at the Pendennis Club, in Louisville, Kentucky.

This Old Fashioned recipe appeared in a book written by George J. Kappeler, published in 1895, called Modern American Drinks.

THE OLD-FASHIONED WHISKEY COCKTAIL

Dissolve a small lump of sugar with a little water in a whiskey-glass; add two dashes Angostura bitters, a small piece ice, a piece lemon-peel, one jigger whiskey. Mix with small bar-spoon and serve, leaving spoon in glass.

Robert Hess, writing for Drinkboy.com, cautions that it is common for modern bartenders to top off the drink with an ounce or more of soda. In his opinion, the soda spoils the drink.

Here is another recipe from Famous New Orleans Drinks and How to Mix’em by Stanley Clisby Arthur.

Old Fashioned Cocktail

1 lump sugar
2 dashes Peychaud or Angostura bitters
1 jigger rye whiskey
1 piece lemon peel
1 chunk pineapple
1 slice orange peel
2 maraschino cherries

Into a heavy-bottomed barglass drop a lump of sugar, dash on the bitters, and crush with a spoon. Pour in the jigger of rye whiskey and stir with several lumps of ice. No shaking allowed! Let the mixture remain in the glass in which it is prepared. Garnish with a half-ring of orange peel, add the chunk of pineapple and the cherries with a little of the maraschino juice. Twist the slice of lemon peel over all and serve in the mixing glass with the barspoon.

It is suggested by some that it is best to dissolve the sugar into a small amount of water first since sugar does not dissolve well in alcohol.

The appearance of additional fruit became commonplace after the days of prohibition.

Try both versions and decide which you prefer.

Top Computer Problems Leading To Data Recovery

Filed under:World Of Technology — posted on @ 9:29 pm

Common And Easily Remedied Computer Problems

There are a number of easily remedied computer problems that users often fear will require data recovery. Fortunately there are a number of equally easy solutions to many of these problems. There are a number of reasons computers can act up. Some may be powered up correctly, others may have incorrectly connected or poorly connected cables. It is important you investigate all potential problems before panicking and assuming our data has been lost.

Here are some common problems that may or may not necessitate data recovery:

Your computer freezes up and you can’t extract your data. Usually this is a temporary situation. This often occurs when the user has too many applications open at the same time. You may have to manually restart your computer to get things working again. Chances are no data recovery will be necessary in this situation.

Power outages. In some cases your computer may stop working due to a power outage or failure. The best way to check this is to check your outlet. You can minimize your risk of data loss and the need for data recovery in this case by using a surge protector. This is particularly beneficial during storms.

Computers also tend to act weird when contaminated whether by dirt, dust, food particles or even unintended spills. Be sure you routinely clean your computer and keep the area you work in free of potential hazards that can wreak havoc on a computer (like a large spill). Doing so will minimize your risk for major computer meltdown and subsequent need for data recovery.

7 Writing Muse Kickers to Fill Up That Blank Page

Filed under:Living With Publishers — posted on @ 12:45 pm

Nothing is more daunting for any writer than having to stare at a blank sheet of paper.

When we stare at a blank sheet of paper, we often think, “What am I going to write?” A few minutes later, it becomes, “Oh my goodness, I can’t think of anything to write!” And several minutes later, it turns into something like, “Write, dangnabit! Write! Write! WRITE!”

Some writers call this writer’s block. But I call it the “Writing-Muse-Needs-A-Kick” syndrome.

And that’s exactly what we’re going to do with your writing muse gone truant. We’re going to kick her back into gear so you can fill up that blank page.

Here are 7 writing muse kickers for you to try right now:

1. First Line: Begin a story with “There was once a chance I didn’t take…”

2. Cliche Starter: Weave a story or poem around the cliche, “keep your powder dry.”

3. Power of Metaphor: What does “a string of laughter” make you think of?

4. Proverb Mix: “Beauty breaks the camel’s back.”

5. Story Words: Use the words “pianist, pencil, high-rise building, running shoes” in a story.

6. What If? Story: What if you’re going to write a story about betrayal, with a young man as the main character and a locket as the key object? Set your story on a ranch.

7. Quick Prompt: Write about what you’d say to an uninvited guest.

Automating Your Blog - Ways to Make Blogging Easier

We can automate many, many things in our lives. We have automatic dishwashers to wash our dishes – but somebody has to load it. We have automatic car washes to wash our cars, but we still have to drive the car into the car wash. We can make automated payments, but we still have to make sure that we make the money to pay those bills. The point is that when you think about it, in many cases, automated isn’t really so automated. The same is true when it comes to automating your blog.

In theory, you cannot automate a blog. Blogs are meant to be original. They contain your thoughts, information, or your opinions about specific issues or events. You cannot automate your thoughts and therefore there technically is no method for automating your blog. You can, however, make blogging easier. It all starts with organization and preparation.

First, choose blogging software, or a blog host that is simple to set up and simple to use. Many people spend a huge amount of time trying to figure out how to use the software for their blogs. It doesn’t have to be that difficult – and if it is, use a different service or different software. The blogging revolution may pass by the time most of us figure out some of that software! Don’t waste time with complicated blogs. There are too many other simplified solutions that are available, such as Blogger at http://www.blogger.com or Word Press at http://www.wordpress.com.

Next, make a list of things that you can write about. Try to list enough topics to cover you for a year of blogging if possible. This way, you won’t ever have to worry about writer’s block. A great deal of time can be wasted each day just trying to figure out what you should blog about. You should even consider taking several days to write blog entries in advance. You could even write all of your blog entries for the year in some cases, unless your topic is more time sensitive. For instance, if you blog about world events, you cannot come up with a list of things to blog about, because those events have yet to occur.

Providing Trackbacks to other people’s blogs is very important in the world of blogging if you want to build a large readership. Spend some time searching for related blogs, and add them to your news reader. Plan time each day to see what those bloggers are blogging about. This may give you fresh ideas for your own blog, and it their posts may even tie in with a topic that is on your list of things to blog about. You should also add the feeds for your favorite headline news sites to your reader to stay up-to-date on any late breaking news that you can blog about as well.

Look at the options that are available for your blog software or service. Take advantage of any option that will save you time, such as pinging services, filtering certain words, or blocking certain domain – spammers hit blogs often, and removing all that spam takes time. Avoid this by blocking them in advance. Most blogging software and services already have lists of the spammer’s domains, and you can automatically block them with the push of a button. You can also send pings to services such as weblog and Feedster through Pingoat (www.Pingoat.com) in less than one minute after you update your blog.

Things to look for when buying a new mattress

Filed under:Home Improvement Center — posted on @ 7:55 am

There are many features and qualities that you look for when
wanting to buy a mattress. One of the biggest things that
consumers look for is quality. Should you go for a name brand
mattress or is it better to find a cheap deal. Often they say
you get what you pay for. Top name manufacturers like SEALY,
TEMPUREPEDIC, and others definitely fit the bill. Quite often
mattress retailers have been known to have a questionable method
of selling. Knowledge is power, so we are equipping you with
some tips and questions that you can ask.

When it comes down to mattress construction there have been a
ton of improvements and suggestions. A way to measure firmness
is by actually laying down on the sleep system that has caught
your eye. Other important factors to take into consideration are
the material that it was made with as higher quality products
often have thicker padding and higher coil counts. Some
companies advertise very inexpensive mattresses to get you into
the door, then, try to you when you are there. After all you
spend almost one-third of your life on your back.

Perhaps you have sleep problems and are looking for the ideal
solution. When buying a mattress always replace your box
spring!!!!! I cannot stress this enough!!!! The set is made to
work together. The box springs are located in position to
support the mattress springs. One brand does not match another.
Always buy the set!!! Even though your old box spring “looks
fine” it has had just as many years of wear and tear as the
mattress and is worn out. You definitely want to do your
homework. Higher price not necessarily means better quality. No
matter what you want you can find the ideal surface that you
will enjoy for a long time.
