The “Disaster Dozen” Top Twelve Myths Of Disaster Preparedness

Hurricane Katrina and others in the season have given us yet
another disaster preparedness wake-up call. Do we pay attention
now or hit the snooze button again?

Pushing past the debates over government reaction, we come to
the bottom line conclusion that, “Yes, more could have been
done.” In other articles we’ll get into some of those debates,
but for now, let’s look at the most important part of a
comprehensive emergency readiness plan, and that is the
preparedness levels of individuals and families.

We find that the biggest obstacles to comprehensive family
emergency readiness education are the misconceptions surrounding
the true nature of preparedness. So, to set the stage for better
education, and ultimately better public safety, let’s take a
look at some of these myths.

1. “If something happens all I have to do is call 911.” Help can
only go so far, or be there so quickly. Security, like charity,
begins at home and the responsibility for your family’s safety
rests on your shoulders. This isn’t to say that you shouldn’t
call for help when it’s truly needed, it’s to remind you that
you may be on your own for while, especially if the situation is
an expansive, or severe one.

2. “All I need is a 72-hour kit with a flashlight, first aid
kit, some food and water, and a radio.” We’re not sure where the
“72 hour” figure came from, but it’s an extremely minimal amount
of time and not very realistic. A more practical goal is to be
self-sufficient for a minimum of 2 weeks. Why 2 weeks? As bad as
Katrina was, there are numerous disaster and terrorism scenarios
that could see substantially more damage, and a disruption of
local services for three weeks or more. Also, many biological
scenarios may see a 2-week quarantine. Regarding supplies and
equipment, avoid the “one-size-fits-all simpleton lists” and
customize yours to your family’s unique threats, needs, and
assets.

3. “My insurance policy will take care of everything.” SWAT
teams of insurance agents aren’t going to instantly rebuild your
life like on TV. Insurance companies will be far more concerned
about their own bottom line than yours. In fact, many insurance
companies are rewriting policies to redefine some rather common
terrorism or disaster related incidents as being excluded and
not coverable. Check your policies closely!

4. “Good preparedness is too expensive and too complicated.”
Nothing could be further from the truth. The problem is, we
haven’t made preparedness a part of our overall education. We
get more preparedness info on an airline flight than we get as
citizens. Most of us aren’t taught that there are literally
thousands of subtle, simple, and economical things we can do to
drastically improve our emergency readiness. The notion that it
might be expensive or complicated has come from companies that
aggressively market high-priced unnecessary gear.

5. “We can only form a neighborhood group through FEMA, the Red
Cross, or local Law Enforcement.” Neighbor helping neighbor is
one of our highest civic duties. No one regulates this and you
don’t have to get anyone’s permission to coordinate your safety
with others. Working with these groups is rather advantageous,
but not required.

6. “In a ‘Weapons of Mass Destruction’ terrorist attack, we’re
all dead anyway.” “WMDs” might kill larger numbers of people,
but that doesn’t mean widespread destruction is a guaranteed
thing. In fact, for widespread destruction, a top-grade WMD must
be expertly and precisely applied under ideal conditions. This
does not mean that WMDs are to be ignored or that they’re
nothing to fear, it’s just that “Mass Destruction” does NOT mean
“Total Destruction” at all.

7. “Nothing like that could ever happen here.” Though some areas
are more prone to certain types of disasters, say earthquakes in
California, or terror attacks in New York, no area on earth is
completely immune. Too, with as much as people travel, you might
travel somewhere and wind up in a disaster you never thought
about.

8. “All I have to worry about is my own family.” Technically
yes, but the more you’re able to care for your own family, the
more you can and should help others.

9. “If preparedness were really important it would be taught in
school.” Preparedness really is that important, but schools only
have so much time and budget to teach the things they already
do. This is one of the many things we’re trying to change, but
for now, you’re going to have to not only realize the importance
of thorough emergency readiness, but to teach your family
yourself.

10. “I can get free preparedness information on the Internet.”
Many free sources contain really good information. However, it
takes time and experience to filter the trash from the treasure.
Worse, some of these free sites have “information” that could
actually cause more problems than they cure. This is why we
spent years in gathering the over 400 additional books and
training manuals on the CDs in “Disaster Prep 101.”

11. “Full preparedness means I have to get a lot of guns and be
a ‘Survivalist.” While personal security and family safety are
valid concerns, the vast majority of people around you will not
be a threat. In fact, though looters gained a lot of media
attention after Katrina, there were far more numerous stories of
heroism. We suggest you balance your personal security needs
with your desire to help those around you and strive to reach
the best of both worlds.

12. “If something really bad happens, NO one will help.” There’s
no such thing as “no one helping.” However, the best thing
people can do to is to prepare their families so they need as
little outside help as possible. There’s always someone needier
than you and the more prepared you are, the more you free up
assistance resources so they can help those less fortunate.

7 Beauty Tips For Acne Prone Skin

Acne. Boy do I hate it. Those pimples popping up all over my face back in my teenaged years. Even now, I do get acne outbreaks when I am stressed, or use the wrong skin care product. I’ve been to many doctors who are able to clear my acne, until the next outbreak.

Part of the reason is oily skin. Greasy skin that traps dirt and skin debris clogging up pores make your skin pores an excellent breeding place for bacteria. The bacteria multiplies and voila. You have acne.

All is not lost. If you have oily skin that is prone to acne, here are 7 beauty tips to help keep the pimples away.

1. Keep your HANDS off your face.
You hands, after touching so many things, opening the door, picking up a bag, things we do everyday, are covered with bacteria. The last thing you want is to put that bacteria on your face. Touch your face often with your hands, or worse still, pick those pimples with your fingers, and you will see the pimples multiply.

2. Keep your HAIR off your face.
If you have oily skin, you probably have oily hair. Oily hair brushing against your face adds to the oil. Oil, sweat and skin debris are a great way to clog the pores in your skin, leading to more pimples. If you notice pimples appearing on your forehead, or your cheeks and chin, typically where your hair might brush against, your hair could be the culprit. Wear a hairband, use hair clips to keep your hair off your face, tie it into a pony tail, or get a hair cut.

3. Wash your face 3 times a day with a good acne cleanser.
I got that tip from a doctor. I washed my face when I woke up, at lunch time and at bedtime with a cleanser that is meant for skin that has acne. My skin cleared when I stuck to the routine and used only skin care products meant for skin with acne. A bar of soap meant for washing your face does the trick just as well.

4. Stick to acne skin care
Every time I stray from that point, I end up with a major acne outbreak. Always. Everytime I see my pals with exceptionally radiant skin, I want to use whatever they use. I would switch to richer, anti aging skin care as a preventive measure, worried about wrinkles appearing when I get older. That backfires every time. I end up with more pimples. Stick to good acne skin care products.

5. Relax
Did you notice how pimples tend to appear more before a stressful event. Exams. A big date. A presentation. Stress wreaks havoc on your skin. Ok, pimples can also pop up due to hormonal imbalances, like just before your period.

6. Sleep
Your skin heals itself when you sleep. Your entire body heals itself in your sleep. A night without sleep may lead to more pimples. Make it a habit to leave your worries behind and get a good night’s sleep. Work out more earlier in the day. Get some exercise before evening. It helps.

7. Stay away from pressed powder compact.
Yup. You heard me right. I got this tip from a friend. Her friend used a pressed powder compact to hide her acne. Instead, the more she used it the worse it got. Just think. By mid day, your skin gets oily. You take out the powder compact, and use that powder puff to apply pressed powder on your face. Now, your face would already have dirt, bacteria and oil on it. Pat your face with that powder puff and now that puff picks up the dirt, bacteria and oil. You put it back into the compact. The bacteria happily breeds in there. Then you take out the compact again and pat more powder, mixed with oil, dirt and bacteria onto your face, picking up more gunk, putting in more gunk into your compact. The cycle goes on. A better bet would be to use blotting paper to blot off the excess oil instead. Then you can throw the paper away after use. Use the blotting paper meant for your face like the ones found at http://www.everythingbeauty.info/blotting%20paper.htm

About this powder puff thing, make it a point to wash your powder puff and all your make up brushes regularly, with soap and water. Then dry them completely before you keep them. Guess that would make it an 8th tip right?

Oily, acne prone skin needs a lot of care. The bright side is that oily skin is slower to show signs of aging than dry skin. Take care of your skin and you’ll probably look younger than your peers as the decades go by.

‘Don’t Get Grief From Ezine Readers

Filed under:Living With Publishers — posted on @ 7:53 pm

My friend Joe was very angry. He has just launched his ezine. Last week, he called me in a panic.

“My ISP is threatening to shut me down” he cried.

“Why, what happened?” I asked.

Slowly, working through his agitation and angst, I gathered that one of his ezine ’subscribers’ had accused Joe of ’spamming’ - sending email (or in this case, an ezine) to someone who had NOT requested it. It took a week of repeated phone calls and emails to his ISP before he could get back to his ezine publishing tasks.

It could happen to anyone. Even you!

And this made me wonder - Why would any ezine publisher ’spam’ readers? Or even open him/herself to such accusations?

The simple answer - Many just don’t know how easy it is to avoid.

In my book “Ezine Launch - Creating ‘Killer’ Ezines”, I strongly emphasize the importance of the subscribing process. And that’s what this article will do too - give you TEN reasons to keep your ezine subscribers happy, enthusiastic about your writing, and ultimately make them your most valued customers.

Do it right and you can play them like a musical instrument, get them to sway to your tune, listen to what you’re saying, believe you, respect you.

And presto, you have yourself a new customer.

Once this trusting relationship is established, you can name your own price and your readers will order from you. Your sales will explode, profits will skyrocket.

But only if you do it right !

Today unforgiving subscribers are less tolerant of poor ezine design and administration. They vote for bad ezines by hitting the “Unsubscribe” button. The margin of error in ezine publishing is small.

That is why a tutorial like Ezine Launch - http://www.EzineMarketingCenter.com/ezinelaunch/ is an invaluable tool, a hand-holding guide to your initial ventures into publishing email newsletters, leading you step-by-step through the difficult first steps to e-publishing success.

And well begun is half-done. That’s where Double Opt-In comes in.

What does this mean?

With double opt-in, you don’t send out your ezine to everyone who asks for it - until they have confirmed their request by either visiting a website or responding to an email message. This not only verifies that the ezine request is genuine, it also provides you - the ezine publisher - with proof of this request.

To see what I mean, visit our ezine sign-up page at Ezine Launch Monthly at http://www.EzineMarketingCenter.com/ezlmonthly/

Detractors claim that with double opt-in you lose readers.

True, some people who ask for your ezine may not re-confirm.

But think about it - how many of them are likely to become loyal customers or long-term readers? What you’re losing are the tire-kickers, the freebie seekers who transiently flit from one thing to another.

And that is a good thing. Because those that remain are the serious prospects, people who are really interested in you, your product, your service. They are potential customers.

So here are ten reasons to go down a double opt-in route.

With double opt-in, you can

1. Attract the most interested, responsive target audience as subscribers

2. Gain respectability and professionalism for your ezine by behaving responsibly

3. Quickly establish a trusting relationship with readers

4. Ensure most subscribers will actually read your ezine, since they asked for it - twice

5. Enhance the value of your ezine to advertisers who can now reach receptive opt-in audiences

6. Improve the effectiveness of your ezine as a marketing vehicle for your own product and services

7. Have documented proof that subscribers asked to be included on your mailing list

8. Avoid mischievous people signing up someone else’s email addresses for your ezine

9. Save yourself time and money otherwise spent handling complaints from angry ’subscribers’

10. Spare yourself the anxiety and anguish of being shut down by your ISP, or worse, legal action

For all these reasons and more, a double opt-in subscribing process is today’s ‘gold standard’ for ethical and responsible ezine publishing.

Short cuts work in the short term. In the long run, however, quality and professionalism in your ezine publishing efforts will reap the greatest rewards.

Here are a few more resources that explain the most effective ways to grow your list quickly — and ethically!

Making the Most of Your Photographs When Scrapbooking

When choosing which photographs to use for your scrapbooking project, it is best to pick photos of good quality.

Consider choosing only photos that clearly illustrate the theme you desire for your album. Digital pictures, instant photos and even black and white photographs can be used. It is important to be careful that the chemicals within the photos do not interfere with the rest of your scrapbook.

Some chemicals used in photos like lignin and acid in photo paper can lessen the preservation time of your scrapbook album. The safest pictures to use are digital photos simply because they can be easily printed out directly on lignin-free and acid-free paper. Keep in mind though that the pictures you choose to mount will become a permanent feature of your scrapbook. That’s why it is best to use copies of your most cherished photos. Just scan each picture on a computer scanner and be sure to print each image on lignin-free and acid-free paper for the best results.

To make your photos especially interesting, try using a photo editing software program to alter the look of your photos. Make that color photo black and white or try sepia for that old-fashioned look.

Cutting and cropping your images adds interest to your scrapbook pages and sends a special message to the viewer to take a closer look.

All in all, the way photographs are arranged and presented can enhance the overall look of your album and turn your project into a professional-looking memory album.

Foods and Diets Litigations

Filed under:The Lawyers Way — posted on @ 2:37 pm

Why is that food processing and commerce are not strictly regulated by law so as to prevent health problems generated by an inadequate diet? Unhealthy products encourage an unhealthy diet, appealing the consumer by their availability within reach and the invading advertising. If the food producers are controlled by health officials, then it must be that the regulations are too lax in as far as marketed foods are concerned.

Everyone knows that, for instance, hydrogenated oils and partially hydrogenated oils are highly unhealthy. Tons of studies and informative material have been published, yet there is a population segment that still falls into traps saying that margarine is a “healthier alternative for butter, full of vitamins”, when in fact the trans-fatty acids it contains surpass the “healthy benefits” it offers. For this particular case, all foods containing hydrogentated oils (if the law allows their production, though it shouldn’t) should have a health hazard warning (like those on the cigarette packs), saying something like “This product contains trans-fatty acids that increase the risk of heart disease”. Thus, people would be constantly reminded of the bad effects of such products on health.

Generally, when it comes to foods and dieting, people should be advised of the potential inconvenience that might occur due to some ingredients or the way the food is prepared.

Take for instance the case of the release of so many diets that are not documented, not officially controlled and approved, promissing great things but not being explicit about the great problems they generate. Such as the very popular Atkins, for instance, which is a real danger to health.

I wondered why such anti-health practices are not forbidden? Oh, pardon me! Why should I wonder? It’s obvious: in an ever growing pragmatic course of events, the industrial interests have overpassed the interest for the health of people.

At this point, the role of the well-informed consumer is decisive for his own health. And if people are not fully convinced by so many scientific studies, informative articles and materials, then they surely become when finding out of the multitude of lawsuits against food producers (such as Kraft Foods Inc, the producers of Oreo cookies), fast food chains (McDonald’s) or promoters of diets (such as the Atkins diet).

The producers of the popular Oreo cookies, Kraft Foods Inc were sued in 2003 by the attorney Stephen Joseph, who based his accusations on a provision of the civil code of California saying that manufacturers are liable for products if the consumer is not advised of the products’ unsafety. He rightfully claimed that the public was not aware of the high content of trans-fats in Oreos. He declared that he sued out of concern for the public health and that no money was requested in the lawsuit, which he finally withdrew, explaining that the publicity on this case had made people aware of the health risks enhanced by the product. Anyway, if the lawsuit was intented as bad publicity for the Oreos, the aim was not reached, as Kraft Foods Inc will continue to produce Oreos in a trans-fat free version.

Another famous case of litigation is the suit from 2002 against McDonald’s. The lawsuit was filed by the lawyer Samuel Hirsch on behalf of some obese children. The lawer sustained that the fast food producer mislead the consumers into believing that the products were healthy and safe and claimed that the children developed health problems such as diabetes, high blood pressure and obesity because of eating McDonald’s products. The suit was dismissed on the grounds that no one is forced to eat at McDonald’s and that the law has not the role to moderate individuals’ excesses.

A recent date “diet trial” is going on in Florida. The suit was filed by 53-year-old Jody Gorran against Atkins Nutritionals on May 26, 2004. The plaintiff claims that after going on Atkins diet his cholesterol level increased so much that he needed angioplasty in order to unblock an artery. In addition to financial damages, there is also the request that the company warns the public of the potential dangers of a diet favoring meats, cheeses and other high-fat proteins by labeling their products. The sequel is yet to come.

Even if some of these lawsuits started out of reasons beyond humanitarian, (as for instance the chase for money from damages that such important companies would pay) they have a positive result, namely, the publicity around such cases arises questionning, gives people the idea of doubt, the “assumption of guilt”.

See RSS Feeds from Your Website

RSS feeds have made it so convenient to gather current information. If you have an RSS Reader on your desktop, then from this one window you can get up-to-date information from any sources of your choice, such as:

1. Latest news from news agencies

2. Last articles published on ezines such as this one

3. New products at retail outlets

4. New movie reviews

5. Recent entries in blogs

The list is endless, but you get the idea.

How would you like to give this convenience to the visitors of your website? Your visitors can see RSS feeds with latest info right on your web page instead of going from site to site. And it is very easy to install.

Before you start I suggest that you see some sites which display RSS feeds just to get a feel of it. You can see your My.Yahoo page from where you can subscribe to any RSS feed you want. Or, if you like, you can see some popular feeds on my website:

http://sanjay-j.com/feed.html

Ok, let’s get started with these easy steps.

1. Click open this page :

http://www.feedroll.com/rssviewer/

2. From “Step One” of this page select just one RSS feed out of the dropdown list.

3. Lower on the page in “Step Two” you will see some options. In these options you can fill in your values or leave them at default setting.

4. Click on update button.

5. A similar looking page opens. Down below on this page in “Step Three” there is a code which has to be installed on your website. Copy this code and paste it on a text editor. On right side of the page you can see how the feed will look on your page.

6. Go to step 2 and select some other RSS feeds. Repeat steps 3 to 5 and you will have a collection of codes to be installed on your website.

7. Select the web page where you want to install RSS feeds. I would suggest creating a new page exclusively for RSS feeds.

8. Decide the location on the web page for installing RSS feed. In the HTML code of the web page, paste one of the codes of RSS feeds at the location you have decided.

9. See how RSS feeds looks on your page. You will need to be connected to the net to see the feeds. You can make necessary corrections until you get the right appearance.

10. Add all other RSS feed codes below the first one. Separate each code with breaks. This will put all the feeds in one column.

So that’s it. Simple steps. This will display some popular RSS feeds on your web site using Java. From this starting point you can think of installing other Java scripts or PHP scripts to display any RSS feeds of your choice.

Sanjay Johari regularly contrubutes articles for several ezines. See his site for useful information for benefit of small business owners.

Get Rich Quick on the Internet Scams Revealed

Can you really get rich quick working from home on the internet?
Web site after web site promises you the world and riches, but
is it for real?

My name is Kim Harms and I am a 25 year old stay at home wife.
Just like you, I was once interested in learning more about the
“work from home”, “make millions online”, “do nothing and make
TONS of money” craze that has struck the internet! I always
thought to myself how nice it would be to make money from the
comfort of my home and still be able to spend time with my
husband. The problem was, I had NO idea what I was doing, where
to get started, or if the whole thing was just a scam! The
saying, “if it’s too good to be true, then it is,” flooded my
mind. I poured myself into hours and hours of research. I
purchased MANY ebooks, read free articles, blogs, and reviews to
familiarize myself with the market and all that it had to offer
my family and me. I spent so much time pouring over information
before I even felt somewhat comfortable getting started with
anything!

It’s been over a year now since I started my home based business
research on the internet and seven months since the launch of my
very own business. No, I have NOT become a millionaire like a
lot of those ebooks promise you. I have however been able to
bring in a very nice second income for my family. I am now
making more from home than I was when working as a manager in
retail! The plan is simple, the more time I invest into my
business, the more money I make. To be completely honest, it
does take work on your part and it’s not as easy as they make it
sound, especially if you’re not internet savvy like me in the
beginning. But, the truth is, if you are willing to invest a
little time upfront, bring to the plate a positive “I can”
attitude, and work towards a reasonable goal-then you WILL start
seeing your efforts pay off!

I hope to be able to share with you the things I learned along
the way to make your venture much more time efficient and save
you some money from investing in the MANY ebooks out there that
seem to promise you the world and deliver nothing. First, to a
skeptic, any type of internet business is a scam! People can’t
comprehend that it is possible to actually make a descent living
right from the comfort of there home, that would be to good to
be true. I don’t blame you for being skeptical! It’s hard to
have trust when there is so much misleading information out
there on this topic. The thing that I found most frustrating was
that most of the “get rich quick” businesses promised you
thousands in your pocket in weeks! They even show you their
earnings that reflect there massive fortune made in a matter of
months! This gives people the wrong impression that anyone can
make that kind of money no matter what their skill level. The
truth is, the people making this kind of money on the internet
are super talented, marketing experts that have been in the
business for years and have mastered the trade, not a beginner
like you or me! The uplifting thing however is that it is
possible it will just take time.

In order to be successful in this business you must be equipped
with a positive attitude and believe in yourself. If you don’t,
you will seemingly fail! You must be willing to invest the time,
research, and training required to be able to make a living on
the internet.

As I said before, during my research I invested in about 15
different ebooks all promising me millions! I engulfed myself in
TONS of reading only to find out that most of the books were a
waste of my time and money. A lot of the information was watered
down, unrealistic, or just plain didn’t work out the way that
they stated! I am writing this article to save you this hassle!
Please don’t waste your money on useless information out there
just because it promises you the world! It can get expensive
investing in research products. I have however found two of the
ebooks to be VERY informative and extremely useful over the past
year and I highly recommend starting with these. Gathering
information and reading literature about making money on the
internet is the smartest thing you can do to become successful.
You just have to invest in the right product. Both of these
ebooks are just MY recommendations and I have found them to be
invaluable. You can read over there context and determine if
these strategies are for you and your business.

First, I HIGHLY recommend The Rich Jerk. This is probably the
best ebook I have read containing the best information. He
offers many different strategies to get money coming in from
different resources. The content in his blog is very arrogant
and I was actually offended by some of the content. But after
reading the book, I discovered that the information itself was
worth it! I have found quite a few of his strategies to be
GUARANTEED moneymakers for my business!

Second, Google Cash is an amazing ebook that is very well
written and really explains the strategies in depth and easily
for any beginner! The author, Chris Carpenter, not only inspired
me but became a role model in my own endeavors. This ebook deals
with Google Adwords and the strategies in making money writing
Adwords. If this interests you, I HIGHLY recommend purchasing
this ebook. I still refer to it to this day! Google is a
multi-billion dollar company…who wouldn’t want to be a part of
that!

Here are the links to view the information on each of these two
ebooks:

The Rich Jerk

Google Cash

I hope this information was helpful for you and that you feel
better equipped to start researching further. I encourage you to
think BIG and to never take your eye off of your goals. You can
do anything you put your heart into. Good luck!

What To Do With Your Boat For A Hurricane

During a hurricane your boat can be in severe jeopardy even if the storm doesn’t pass near to you. The most important thing is to make preparations in advance. As a storm grows close the weather can make it difficult to prepare your boat and supplies could already be sold out. There are different strategies you need to be aware of if your boat is moored at a dock or kept in dry-dock on a trailer. If at all possible it is always best to try to move your boat inland and toward high ground.

If your boat is moored at a dock it is important to re-enforce the moorings and double check that the cleats on the boat and dock are secure. Attach double lashings at each of the four points you are tied off to, and make sure to move the attachment higher up on the pylons to allow for the rising tide. During a rough storm the lines will chafe along the boat, which can cause one of the lines to break free and slam your boat into the dock. Cover any points that make chafe with leather, plastic or rubber coverings to prevent a line from breaking free. Old garden hose cut into sections will work well for a line covering. Secure any equipment from the deck down below and pull any outboard engines to be stored. Secure bumpers and tire to the sides of the boat to prevent damage from the dock.

If you are living in a waterfront property and you boat is on davits consider putting the boat on a trailer. If you want to keep your boat on the davits, remove anything possible from the boat (Electronics, outboard motor, equipment) and store them in the house. Cover the boat and swing the davits so the boat in over dry land and set it down on the ground. With heavy ropes secure the boat to the base of the davits and to two points on the other side of the boat if possible. Smaller boats can be filled with water to make them heavier.

If your boat is stored on a trailer make sure to lash the boat down to the trailer at more than one place. Tie the boat down to four different points to secure objects. Follow the advice above in removing any equipment possible and storing anything possible down below. Drain the air from the trailers tires and place chocks (Bricks, wood or cinder blocks) in front and behind the wheels. Strip the boat down as much as possible and try to place the trailer in a secure location with enough distance from other boats.

Establish What You Want With NLP

Recently, a lady came to see me and she had successfully stopped smoking with me and as she had enjoyed the success after 30 years of trying and failing to stop smoking, she was so happy that she felt capable of doing anything. She brought in what looked like a shopping list of things in her life that she wanted to change!

Just last week, I also got an email from someone that receives this ezine of mine, and they wanted all sorts of different things to happen in their life, and couldn’t decide what to focus on. So, this month, I thought I’d give you some pointers on helping yourself to know how to know what you want. Sounds a bit confusing, let me put that more simply; “How to know what you want.”

In the late 1990s, and during most of the time I have ever been emloyed, I was doing jobs that I found to be unsatisfactory or that I simply did not enjoy. WHen I did my first self-hypnosis course and learned some of the main aspects of NLP, I was amazed by the resources that already existed within me and as I learned more about modern ideas of personal development, two questions became more and more insightful to me. Those two questions were (and still are..)

“What do you want?” and “How will you know you’ve got it?”

As the questions came up more and more, I realised I had not applied them to my self as I should have done. What did I want? The more I asked myself that question, the less I knew the answer. However, I was sure of the fact that I didn’t want to keep doing what I was doing, and that the personal development fields I was discovering were to be involved with my future somehow.

So, as you stop and think with regards to your own situation in life, in whatever aspect of it, or of your life as a whole (not a hole!) have a good think and identify anything that is currently part of your life that you want to let go of in the future. Really think about that.

Almost everyone has examples of one sort or another. What about these ideas;

- A current job you don’t enjoy.
- Unwanted habits that cause you problems.
- Unable to spend time doing things that make you happy.
- A dissatisfying relationship.
- A belief about yourself that doesn’t serve you well.

Take a few moments and figure out what you no longer wish to have in your life. As per all my previous rantings, remember not to ficus on them too heavily, just know what they are for now.

FOllowing that first discovery of self-hypnosis and the things I learned within it, I progressed to studying hypnotherapy, NLP, Emotional Intelligence, I went on courses all over the world, read hundreds of books, listened to audio programmes on hundreds of topics, I trained in all sorts of other therapies too. Even after all that, I still was unsure about what I really wanted, but I did know what I didn’t want and I also knew what sort of direction I wanted to go in, and so I handed in my notice at work!

I knew that I wanted to have lots of time to spend furthering my studies, I knew that I wanted to have financial freedom and that I wanted to be doing work that fulfilled me and helped others, that I wanted to continue having lots of fun, excitement and adventure and of course that I wanted to be happy and wonderfully peaceful in myself. You have the benefit of someone else telling you how that happened to them so you do not have to embark on the same lengthy process, instead, you can follow the same steps in a far, far shorter period of time.

So, once you have identified the things that you would love to let go of or move away from in your life, the next step to take is to identify anything that is part of your life that you definitely want to continue in the future.

We all have good things in our lives; all of us. Some of us may not think so, but we do. Identify those aspects of your life you definitely choose to continue to have. They can include things like good health, intimate friendships, your home, feelings of happiness, a loving family, excitement and discovery or your income.

Then, once you have made sure of some (or all) of the wonderful things in your life you wish to continue, you can identify anything you would like to become part of your life in the future. Think about what you want in the future.

If you have sometimes had difficulty knowing what you wanted in the past, it can be good to choose big-scale things rather than small specifics. Think about what it is that you definitely want in your life in the future, no matter what? This may include a loving relationship, a better income, fulfilling work, intimate friendships, personal development, good quality health and fitness, a sense of real happiness and other wonderful feelings.

These are examples of the big scale things, next you can begin to become more specific about them however, be careful not to overspecify, by that I mean if you want to have fulfilling work, but you don’t know what you want to do, get specific about what has to happen for your work to be fulfilling, for example working with people, being outdoors, making a difference, able to learn something new everyday and so on – whatever ‘fulfilling’ means to you. Remember to think about what fulfilling really means to you and not just think about the examples that I have given here; that may not really be what you truly find to be fulfilling.

It is not necessary to be specific about what that work would necessarily be. Just set your target as ‘fulfilling work’, go through how you’ll know you’ve got it, then let your unconscious mind do it’s magic.

So, you can see and begin to get a handle on what it is that you really want and once you know that, you can begin to work towards how to get that. You can go through other articles of mine to find out how to do that more easily.
