Meet Helen…your new online teacher

Stanley Kubrik’s HAL 9000 may have been smart enough to run the
spaceship Discovery, but HAL lacked one thing today’s computers
may soon have–a face. Computers, long plagued by the
impersonality of a box with speakers and programmer’s graphics,
will soon have a face and attitude compatible with their users.

A one-on-one teacher just for you

For simplicity’s sake, we’ll assign a name to our computer’s new
face and call her Helen (of course, you’ll be able to name
him/her anything you like). Helen will smile at you, move
around, even make you laugh. She’ll have an angelic voice,
calming hand gestures and more expressions than Marcel Marceu.
But most importantly, she’ll encourage you to learn–everything
and anything–from French to forensics.

Helen will have “soul”

Researchers in the areas of instructional technology,
human-computer interaction and psychology have determined that
computers can be more persuasive if they have a visual identity
and “soul.” Thus, they have designed what they call an effective
“pedagogical agent,” an animated, three- dimensional character
that serves as the “face” (and “interface”) of the computer, one
that can mimic human emotional expressions, nonverbal
communication and interactions.

You’ll want to bring her an apple

Helen will be the perfect teacher. She’ll interact with you,
adapt to your strengths and weaknesses, even provide emotional
and cognitive feedback. Far better than Microsoft Word’s
annoying and intrusive paperclip ‘Clippy,’ Helen will engage you
and help you focus on the task at hand. And unlike a human
mentor, Helen’s age, ethnicity, personality, mannerisms, and
interactive style will be matched to your preferences to
encourage learning. In short, you’ll have that “favorite
teacher” who got you through math or chemistry.

She’ll do everything but send you to detention

Helen will evaluate your understanding throughout your
“e-class,” just like a human teacher, and she’ll adapt the
lesson plan accordingly. She won’t move on to more sophisticated
concepts until it’s clear you’ve grasped the basics. If you
don’t, she’ll continue with the basics until you “get it.” And
if that means prompting you to ask questions, she’ll do that
too, offering encouragement, memorable examples, even a clever
joke or two to keep you interested. You’ll get to know Helen
much like you would a really interesting teacher. She’ll have a
colorful personality, reveal her life history and specific areas
of knowledge and skills–in short, she’ll be really cool. Best
of all, she’ll always be up to date on the subject at hand,
tirelessly absorbing the latest research or historic tomes on
the subject being taught.

Helen won’t make you stand in the corner

Helen will let you learn at your own pace in a low-pressure
learning environment. She’ll project enthusiasm and support when
you get the right answer; yet, unlike a real classroom filled
with peers, you won’t be embarrassed if you fail to grasp a
concept or answer incorrectly. Finally, teachers like Helen can
be set up to act as coaches or disciplined instructors–teaching
everything from the history of art to advanced calculus.

So prepare yourself for the brave new world of computer
learning. Your favorite teacher will make sure you get an A in
class and an E for effort. And yes, you can chew gum in class,
as long as you give Helen your due attention.

Selling Your Property On The Internet

Filed under:Great Real Estate Tips — posted on @ 8:09 pm

Should you sell your property on the internet? This is a common question with an equally common answer – YOU MUST!

Selling Your Property On The Internet

For those looking to sell a property themselves, many ask themselves whether or not they should sell on the internet. Well, the simple answer is, if you don’t list it on the internet then you are only hurting yourself. Just like magazines and newspapers, the internet provides a great source for homeowners to draw attention to the property that they have for sale. In fact, the internet is now the dominate media where homebuyers look for properties with over 70 percent reporting as much.

What is more is that the internet is an incredibly easy place to list a property. The typical process involves opening an account, uploading as much description as possible and uploading photographs. Much like a dating site, the more information and photographs you post, the quicker your property will attract interest from potential buyers. This is the digital equivalent of curb appeal.

There are a number of sites you can use to list your property for sale on the Internet. All basically offer the same listing characteristics, but pricing is radically different. Some sites, such as ours mentioned below, offer a free first month listing. Others try to get you to commit to a flat fee for a year with prices as high as $750. There are plenty of others as well that offer prices ranging between these two extremes.

In general, you do not want to commit to the flat fee for a year listing. Although the real estate market has cooled, it is still roaring hot from a historical perspective. Practically speaking, property may not sell in a week any more, but it does sell in the first 90 days if appropriately priced and so on. Given this fact, it makes little sense to commit to a year listing.

Regardless of the approach you take, the web has radically changed the game in real estate. Online sites offer greater access to the pool of buyers and, in many cases, make the need for real estate agents a superfluous one.

Divorce Survival Challenge… Yes! Is Your Winning Choice

Filed under:Life Of Relationships — posted on @ 7:22 pm

Have you ever been left with a survival situation that requires a single definite decision? Is the answer going to be “Yes” or “No”?

Look, let’s agree that there isn’t going to be a “maybe” or a “perhaps,
if I do this or do that…” Just a simple “Yes” or “No”.

So, what would your decision be?

Oh, I’m sorry, you don’t know what the question is going to be yet,
do you?

Well, let me set a real life scene… Two weeks after my wife’s friend’s
birthday party, two and a half years ago, my wife informed me that she
wanted a divorce and was leaving to live with another man. She had decided
that her life could only be bettered by living the rest of her life with
this man. The reasons for her to decide to go were her own (I still don’t
know for certain) but she had made her choice, “Yes” to go. It was a good
choice for her at that moment in time (although I’m not sure she would
agree with that statement now).

On that evening, I found myself stood beside a fast flowing river not
knowing what to do next. I had run away from the argument and the problem
of what response to give to the ultimatum… My wife was going whether
I liked it or not.

There was no choice left to me. My life was over and there was no reason
to carry on any longer. I just couldn’t carry on because there wasn’t any
point. My beautiful wife had told me in a single sentence that it was all
over. Instantly, she had made my life worthless. Here was 18 years of love,
happiness, hard work, fatherhood… completely wasted. What was I to do?

What would you have decided to do? Jump in and end it all? I thought,
as I stood there thinking, “It would be so easy and quick to finish it
all now.”

In the similar circumstances in your life what have you decided?

Guess what my choice was. There couldn’t have been any other choice
really, could there? Death in the river would have would have removed all
choice and time for thought, after which there could be no “Yes” or “No”
to concern myself with. Whereas, at home there was my teenage son concentrating
upon school examinations… he would need to be told, carefully. And there
was our pet cat that would still need feeding… it’s strange what your
priorities can be at a moment of crisis.

But, did I want to go home?

“No”, I didn’t want to return home but it would have meant running away
from my life, responsibilities and sense of value. It would be an ending…
but it would be a nothing ending… no resolution!

“Yes”, on the other hand allowed opportunity for a new beginning, what
ever that might involve. A New Life, perhaps, with a whole New World of
opportunities and experiences. With all manner of new people to meet and
get to know and…

Did I really want any of this? No, I did not. I’d worked half my life
with my lady trying to help build a family, provide a home and find happiness
and everything that held value in my mind. But, in a short sentence ” I
want a divorce”, it was all gone.

It was time to take control, of myself and the consequences.

I decided not to jump into the river. I’m not a terrific swimmer and
I would only have fought to stay alive… It would have been a horrible
struggle against the speed of the current and whirlpools
that I could see in front of me. It wouldn’t have been an easy end. It
would have left an incredible mess to sort out and I couldn’t leave my
family to clear up the mess. So, the decision had to be “No” to the quick
painless death and “Yes” to life and all the resultant problems of learning
to live life alone.

“Yes”, there would be family, friends and his school that should be
informed who might be able to help my son in what could be a difficult
time for him. At work, there were designs and challenges I still had ambition
to complete. And there were friends who I might be able to talk with and
gain personal support from. I was certain that if I looked hard enough
I hadn’t lost value, nor had I lost my sense of worth. There was an awful
lot to concentrate upon and a great deal to do!

Well, as you can imagine this was the first of many tremendous divorce
survival challenges, including…

  • Hurt and pain

  • Shouting and anger

  • Legal battles

  • An emotionally damaged son to look after

  • Learning to cook and feed ourselves with good healthy food

  • Learning to keep the house clean, clothes washing and ironing

  • And maintain sanity and purpose

“YES”, to the challenge of life through and after divorce was the definitely
the winning choice! I’m happy that there could be no other choice. I have
found something of self-belief and I have seen that I have real value in the
eyes of a person that means most to me… my son.

Don’t you agree? Or are you a better swimmer?

“Divorce And Separation Survival For Men”, which tells of one man’s remarkable
story of how he took control of his life and helped his son survive the
struggle of separation from his mother during divorce. Contact: http://www.divorce-and-separation.com

Life Insurance 101

All types of Life Insurance fall into one of the four groups
explained below, which type you use depends on the type of risk
you wish to protect and the funds you have available.

Term Assurance

Cash lump sum paid out in the event of death

Straight term assurance is still a very cost-effective way of
providing financial protection for the family or business. A
lump sum is normally provided when a claim is made which is paid
into the estate of the policyholder.

In order to avoid complications with delays in probate or
inheritance tax, an appropriate trust can be used so that any
payment is made direct to the beneficiaries.

It is also possible to have the cover indexed according to
inflation, so that the level of cover remains the same in real
terms. Since there is no element of saving, the plans do not
acquire a surrender value. If you wish to include this option,
you could opt for convertible term assurance.

Family Income Benefit

A regular income paid following death during the term of the plan

This type of plan provides for a regular income to be paid out
in the event of the death of the life assured during the term of
the policy. With each month that passes, the liability which the
insurance companies is taking on decreases by a set amount. This
enables the costs to be kept down to a minimum and is often the
least expensive plan available.

The benefits can be written in trust to avoid legal delays and
any possible liability to inheritance tax.

Mortgage Protection.

This type of plan is also a term policy which covers the
declining balance of a repayment mortgage. This enables the cost
to be kept to a minimum but make sure that the interest rate
figure is high enough for any possible increases in the mortgage
rate.

Whole of Life Cover

Provides cover for the rest of your life

The main disadvantage of term cover is that at the end of the
term, cover ceases and any new policy has to be underwritten
according to the age and health of the policyholder at that
time. When a whole of life policy is taken out, the policyholder
has guaranteed insurability for the rest of their lives,
regardless of any change in their health.

This means that initial premiums are likely to be higher than
term assurance cover, but the plan has far more flexibility. It
therefore depends on your personal circumstances as to which
plan is likely to best suit your requirements.

Critical Illness Cover

Cash lump sum for those who die or have a critical illness

In recent years, the need for protection for those who actually
survive serious illness or accident has become more apparent. It
has been described as ‘life cover for the living’.

Most plans cover the common conditions such as heart attack,
stroke and most forms of cancer, but there is variation on more
rare conditions. In addition to specific illnesses, it is quite
common to have permanent disability cover. If you become
permanently disabled and unable to return to work, the plan pays
out. There is however, a wide variation in the definition of
‘return to work. Some plans would only cover you if you were
totally unable to work. Others have an own occupation? clause so
that if you were unable to return to your normal occupation, a
claim could be made. This is an extremely important fact to bear
in mind when selecting your insurer.

Where Can You Find Free Internet Fax Service

No matter what we shop for on the Internet we’re always looking for the best bargain. For those of us that are shopping for an Internet Fax provider there is no difference we want the best for the least, maybe even free Internet Fax services? Realistically the old rule holds true that we get what we pay for, so if something is free you can imagine how good the service is, and of course there would be a lot of limitations. Most consumers when looking for a free Internet Fax service will find that the pay services are worth considering for such a low monthly cost.

There are a couple of free Internet fax service providers. However shoppers must remember that any provider that has a free service likely also offers a monthly subscription based Internet fax service. This means that the amount of faxes you can send or receive varies a lot compared to the subscription services. For example, with one provider the free Internet fax service supplied are permitted to only receive faxes. Also numerous conditions accompany the free Internet service such as: ability to send only 20 free Internet faxes per month.

Of course on the other end of the spectrum the pay service allows subscribers to send and receive faxes any time of day, along with a lot less terms and conditions. Some subscription services will offer a set number of free faxes per month incoming or outgoing, but you are still entitled to all the other benefits of paid subscription.

Now there is another business model available for Free Internet fax service. Some providers are getting into the “bundle” business. This has become big with offline telecommunications providers with wireless, cable, and Internet connections being built into one bill. Companies offering multiple services such as voicemail and other online telecommunications solutions will provide their Internet fax service free of charge; pending you pay your bundle price every month for your other services. These fax services can vary from a limited number of faxes incoming or outgoing each month to accepting an unlimited number of incoming documents.

Now while this concept is often overlooked but is becoming a very large part of companies marketing campaigns free trials are another source of free Internet faxing. Many companies that are looking for new customers will provide free trial offers for a number of faxes or duration of time to introduce their services free of charge. By taking your time searching, and comparing the services available a consumer can rest assured that they will find some form of free internet fax service, or at the very least the best deal possible.

Definition of Obsessive-compulsive disorder

Obsessive-compulsive disorder: A psychiatric disorder
characterized by obsessive thoughts and compulsive actions, such
as cleaning, checking, counting, or hoarding.
Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), one of the anxiety
disorders, is a potentially disabling condition that can persist
throughout a person’s life. The individual who suffers from OCD
becomes trapped in a pattern of repetitive thoughts and
behaviors that are senseless and distressing but extremely
difficult to overcome. OCD occurs in a spectrum from mild to
severe, but if severe and left untreated, can destroy a person’s
capacity to function at work, at school, or even in the home.

The obsessions are unwanted ideas or impulses that repeatedly
well up in the mind of the person with OCD. Persistent fears
that harm may come to self or a loved one, an unreasonable
concern with becoming contaminated, or an excessive need to do
things correctly or perfectly, are common. Again and again, the
individual experiences a disturbing thought, such as, “My hands
may be contaminated–I must wash them”; “I may have left the gas
on”; or “I am going to injure my child.” These thoughts are
intrusive, unpleasant, and produce a high degree of anxiety.
Sometimes the obsessions are of a violent or a sexual nature, or
concern illness.

In response to their obsessions, most people with OCD resort to
repetitive behaviors called compulsions. The most common of
these are washing and checking. Other compulsive behaviors
include counting (often while performing another compulsive
action such as hand washing), repeating, hoarding, and endlessly
rearranging objects in an effort to keep them in precise
alignment with each other. Mental problems, such as mentally
repeating phrases, listmaking, or checking are also common.
These behaviors generally are intended to ward off harm to the
person with OCD or others. Some people with OCD have regimented
rituals while others have rituals that are complex and changing.
Performing rituals may give the person with OCD some relief from
anxiety, but it is only temporary.

The old belief that OCD was the result of life experiences has
been weakened by the growing evidence that biological factors
are a primary contributor to the disorder. The fact that OCD
patients respond well to specific medications that affect the
neurotransmitter serotonin suggests the disorder has a
neurobiological basis.

OCD is sometimes accompanied by depression, eating disorders,
substance abuse disorder, a personality disorder, attention
deficit disorder, or another of the anxiety disorders.
Co-existing disorders can make OCD more difficult both to
diagnose and to treat.

Treatment is by cognitive behavioral therapy and/or medication.
One patient may benefit significantly from behavior therapy,
while another will benefit from pharmacotherapy. Some others may
use both medication and behavior therapy. Others may begin with
medication to gain control over their symptoms and then continue
with behavior therapy.

The neurotransmitter serotonin can significantly decrease the
symptoms of OCD. The first serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SRI)
specifically approved for the use in the treatment of OCD was
the tricyclic antidepressant clomipramine (AnafranilR). It was
followed by fluoxetine (ProzacR), fluvoxamine (LuvoxR), and
paroxetine (PaxilR). Large studies have shown that more than
three-quarters of patients are helped by these medications. And
in more than half of patients, medications relieve symptoms of
OCD by diminishing the frequency and intensity of the obsessions
and compulsions. Improvement usually takes at least three weeks
or longer. If a patient does not respond well to one of these
medications, or has unacceptable side effects, another SRI may
give a better response. Medications are of help in controlling
the symptoms of OCD, but often, if the medication is
discontinued, relapse will follow. Indeed, even after symptoms
have subsided, most people will need to continue with medication
indefinitely, perhaps with a lowered dosage.

Traditional psychotherapy, aimed at helping the patient develop
insight into his or her problem, is generally not helpful for
OCD. However, a specific behavior therapy approach called
“exposure and response prevention” is effective for many people
with OCD. In this approach, the patient deliberately and
voluntarily confronts the feared object or idea, either directly
or by imagination. At the same time the patient is strongly
encouraged to refrain from ritualizing, with support and
structure provided by the therapist, and possibly by others whom
the patient recruits for assistance. For example, a compulsive
hand washer may be encouraged to touch an object believed to be
contaminated, and then urged to avoid washing for several hours
until the anxiety provoked has greatly decreased. Treatment then
proceeds on a step-by-step basis, guided by the patient’s
ability to tolerate the anxiety and control the rituals. As
treatment progresses, most patients gradually experience less
anxiety from the obsessive thoughts and are able to resist the
compulsive urges.

Studies of behavior therapy for OCD have found it to be a
successful treatment for the majority of patients who complete
it. For the treatment to be successful, it is important that the
therapist be fully trained to provide this specific form of
therapy. It is also helpful for the patient to be highly
motivated and have a positive, determined attitude. The positive
effects of behavior therapy endure once treatment has ended.

Reasons to Start a Wireless Network

As far as I’m concerned, wireless networks would have to rank as one of the best inventions in history. They really are the best thing since sliced bread. I mean, really, bread is easy enough to cut yourself, but have you ever tried to wire up a network? Its a lot of hard yakka as many would say.

WiFi is the wireless way to handle networking. It is also known as 802.11 networking and wireless networking. The big advantage of WiFi is its simplicity. You can connect computers anywhere in your home or office without the need for wires. The computers connect to the network using radio signals, and computers can be up to 100 feet or so apart. So, in the spirit of spreading the word, I’m going to give you some great reasons why you need a wireless network.

Sharing Internet Access.

Wireless networking gives you a cheap and easy way to share one Internet connection between multiple computers, eliminating the need for more than one modem. You can even add new computers to your network simply by plugging in a wireless card and switching them on — they get an Internet connection straightaway! There aren’t many wired networks that can say that.

Sharing Files and Printers.

A wireless network gives you access to your files wherever you are in your home, and makes it easy to synchronise the data on a laptop with a home computer. It is much easier to send files between computers with a wireless network than it is to send them by email, or even by burning them to a CD.

Plus, with the printer connected, you can also write things wherever you want, press print, and go and collect them from a printer connected to another computer — printers that are plugged into one of the computers on the network are shared between all the computers automatically.

Always On Connection

A big factor in the spread of broadband was that it let Internet connections be always-on, without needing to dial in. Well, wireless networking lets network connections be always-on, meaning that any of your computers can connect to the Internet whenever you want! You can take laptops from room to room, and it doesn’t matter — they’ll always have access. Plus, there’s not even any need to set up a username and password system, as wireless networks work without logging in. It’s just so convenient!

No More Wires.

This, of course, is the biggest reason why you should switch your network over to wireless. Wires are inconvenient, expensive, ugly and dangerous — you’ll be delighted to see the back of them.

The average Ethernet wire doesn’t cost that much per metre, but once you’ve bought enough metres to do whatever you need to do, well, it tends to add up quickly. Not only that, but if you want to run your wire between rooms or floors, you have to knock holes in the walls — which might not even be allowed if you’re renting. I know plenty of people in rented apartments who had to keep their network confined to one room until they went wireless. With wireless networking, well, you can even take your computer outside, if you want to!

No more wires also means no more spaghetti all over the floor and in the corners. Not only does this improve the safety of your home, as it’s all too easy to trip over exposed wires, but it also means that you don’t have to go to all the trouble of packing all the wires up and re-connecting them at the other end when you move. It also means that you don’t have to examine every wire for damage if your Internet connection breaks down.

Play LAN and Internet Games.

You might have seen an option in your favourite game to play over a LAN. Well, wireless networks are LANs, which means that your whole family can play that game together — without needing the computers to be anywhere near each other. It’s far more fun to play against real people you know than to play against random people over the Internet, not to mention that the game will work much faster. You could even invite your friends to bring their computers and join in — a ‘LAN party’!

An added benefit is that wireless equipment lets you easily connect any games consoles you or your kids might have to the Internet, and start playing online. It’s far easier to play online with a wirelessly connected Xbox or PlayStation 2 than to have to connect it to your modem every time.

Convinced Yet?

If you’re excited, then that’s great — keep reading these articles for advice on how to set everything up. If you don’t think it’s for you yet, well, don’t give up on it — I’m sure you’ll come round when you realise just how easy and cheap wireless really is.

More Free Tips for Beating INSOMNIA

Filed under:Hall Of Medical Resources — posted on @ 12:42 am

The inability to get to sleep at night is a HUGE problem for many people. If you fall into this category, be assured there IS hope to break out of the cycle.

Insomnia is a silent disease that drains the human resources that allow the body and mind to function normally. Lack of energy, unable to concentrate, grumpiness, prone to catching other ailments – ALL related to not being able to get regular and relaxing sleep.

Doctors are happy to prescribe pills and suggest other ‘possible’ remedies, but they are NOT solving the problem. If the truth be known, they really have no idea how to offer you permanent relief from this affliction, so they follow the basic procedure of offering temporary relief. Repeat business allows them to continue earning the dollars. It’s a sad but true story and you remain a victim of the system.

If they took the time to analyze every patient with a sleeping disorder and coordinated the data collected, they would easily be able to determine that the causes of INSOMNIA, can be directly attributable to stress, no matter what the age of the patient is. Everybody suffers from some form of stress. It’s how the stress is handled that dictates whether or not it affects the person’s sleeping patterns and to what degree.

Controlling stress levels has a positive effect in the battle against Insomnia and a number of other sleeping disorders. Finding a workable solution isn’t rocket science. Below are a few free tips you can try out and you will be amazed at just how well they work.

Breaking the cycle that is preventing you from getting to sleep is what you need to concentrate on. You need to replace the negative stressful thoughts with ones that will assist you in getting to sleep.

All of these are tried and tested by myself and have helped me over the years. They can be used individually or as a group. Some things may not break the negative cycle for you, but others will. Some are also dependant on whether or not you sleep alone.

I still find the most useful method for me, has been the ‘counting of sheep.’ Don’t laugh, it REALLY works, but not in the way you may have tried it. Most people using this method will start at one and count until oblivion. Yes, sleep is achieved, but it is as a result of boredom and therefore not a structured remedy.

To apply this tip properly and achieve quick and regular results, pick a number close to one hundred and count BACKWARDS until you reach one. The reason for doing it this way, is that you have a finishing point and, at that finishing point, you will achieve sleep. Each time you count a number, take a long deep breath. It may not work first time but it WILL work. If you reach one or you forget where you are up to, simply start again at the number close to one hundred. Doing this clears your mind of the other thoughts that are getting in the way of you getting to sleep and gives you a positive focal point for your efforts. It’s simple and VERY effective.

You can also try these to break the cycle.

As you are laying there in bed, waiting for you sleep cycle to kick in, gently start to jiggle your leg or your arm, as if you are keeping beat to your favorite tune. Put your radio on with the volume as low as possible so you can barely hear it. You straining to listen plus the jiggling will create its own sleep cycle and you will find yourself easily drifting off into slumber land. This method isn’t compatible if you have a sleeping partner. You may have to find a single bed to test this out. A small price to pay to be able to sleep, don’t you think?

Naturally, there are other ‘factors’ that affect whether or not you are able to achieve regular and relaxing sleeping patterns. These are outside influences that you don’t have any control over, like noise and annoying light, etc. Ideally, your sleeping environment should be dark, quiet and a place where you can feel safe and relaxed. Once you have ‘mastered’ and are in control of these simple tips, you will find that you will be able to adapt to any environment quite easily because you will KNOW that you are able to sleep when you want to.

It is timely to mention one more tip that took me a long time to discover. This definitely had a negative effect on any method I tried. I discovered that your body has a better chance of relaxing and therefore give you a better chance of getting to sleep if it isn’t too hot. I used to go to bed with socks on because my feet were always cold. Wearing socks to bed is a DEFINITE NO - NO! They tend to overheat your whole body and disturb any sleep patterns you may develop. The use of electric blankets has a similar bad effect. You have a much better chance sleeping when your body is cooler and NOT hotter.

I had stress related problems that affected my ability to sleep and I solved the problem. You can as well!

The tips detailed above, coupled with my simple 5 minute – 9 step technique, have successfully helped me achieve regular and relaxing sleeping patterns for over 27 years. I sincerely hope that sharing these tips with you will help you achieve at least some relief from your problem and establish my credibility with you.

Don’t you think it is time to stop repeatedly paying Doctors for partial solutions when they really don’t know how to help you? Isn’t it a better proposition to follow the successful working techniques of someone who has traveled the road you are now on?
