Oneness in Marriage (Part 1)

People get married for a variety of reasons: •companionship
•love •security •it’s the next logical step after college or
after launching from one’s family of origin •procreation •to
appropriately satisfy sexual desires •it is a holy institution
designed by God •others… There are many other possible
reasons…! The one we want to focus on is “oneness.” We believe
that people get married to experience “oneness” or a “shared
reality” with another human being. When two people get married
they have: •a shared history •a common language •a deep sense of
companionship •a sense of security…among other things. The
idea of “oneness” is rooted in Genesis 2:24 –”the two shall
become one flesh.” The Revel Bible Dictionary (pp. 673-674)
explains this phrase…”the two shall become one flesh” in the
follow way. It suggests “the close bonding of individuals who
love one another as equals and who can relate on every level of
the human personality…[It] implies that husband and wife will
experience the joys and sorrows of this life … together.” We
assert that “oneness” is achieved when each person: •Is
interested in what is going on in the other’s life •Accepts the
other [willingly receives] and intentionally purposes to take
the good with the bad •Tries to understand the other person…to
know them thoroughly. It includes factoring in the effects of
one’s family of origin and the effects of one’s life experiences
prior to marriage •Is committed to learning the other person’s
primary love languages: time, talking, toughing, gifts, or acts
of service •Is interested in the goals, hopes and dreams of the
other person and desires to help them achieve these goals •Is
sensitive to the fears and insecurities of the other person
•Willing participates in (to an appropriate extent) the other
person’s life “Oneness” is not a foreign concept for a believer
in Jesus Christ. We are one with Him when we begin our
“born-again” journey with Him. When we ask Him into our
“hearts”, we become “identified” with Him. This is a type of
“oneness”. God designed the marital relationship to project to
the world the type of relationship we have with Him. When we
fulfill this goal of connecting with our spouses (oneness), we
give the world a tangible picture of what our relationships can
look like (with another person and with God). Remember, we (the
church) are called “the bride of Christ” in the New Testament.
God’s goal is that we experience this “oneness” in marriage.
However, “oneness” is not always acheived. Or once it is
acheived, it is not always maintained. We hope that the
following exercise will be helpful to you. You can consider the
questions yourself or perhaps you could discuss these with your
spouse. Exercise: 1. On a scale of 1-10, how well do you accept
your spouse? What would it take to improve your current level of
acceptance? 2. On a scale of 1-10, how well do you understand
your spouse? Is there one area in which you wish your spouse
were more understanding of you? 3. Pray each day that God will
show you ways to improve your level of acceptance of your
spouse. Purpose to better accept the ways that your spouse is
unique (different from you). [Consider writing down your answers
in a journal. Then, pray and ask God to help you grow in
accepting your spouse. Ask God to give you the “grace” or
“divine enablement” to understand your spouse better. Ask God to
help you see your spouse with His (God’s) eyes and heart. Ask
God to solidify the idea that your way of doing things is not
the only way to do things. You don’t always have to be right or
have the last word. Ask God to give you even more love for your
spouse along with the courage and willingness to express that
love consistently to him/her. Watch and see what the Lord is
able to do in you!] We would love to hear from you about the
exercises. Contact us at info@murphytoerner.com This is a series
which will be continued. If you enjoyed this article and are

Arginine Arginine, L-Arginine

Arginine is an
amino acid present in the proteins of all life forms. Under
normal circumstances your body can synthesize sufficient
quantities from your diet to meet your needs, but in times of
stress conditions, such as trauma and wound healing, you may not
be able to manufacture enough. L-Arginine primary
function involves the metabolism of protein and nitrogen. But
the scientific community recently became excited about
arginine’s newfound role as a promoter of cardiovascular health.
L-Arginine is the
primary precursor to nitric oxide, a small molecule that is
responsible for relaxing blood vessels. If you are among the
many people concerned about your circulatory health, then L-Arginine should
be a part of your wellness program.

Cardiovascular Support L-Arginine is a
nitric oxide precursor. Nitric oxide is formed from arginine via
the enzyme nitric oxide synthase or synthasetase (NOS). One of
its functions is to regulate smooth muscle contraction. Nitric
oxide’s effect on blood vessels is the reason nitroglycerine is
prescribed for patients with pain that results from inadequate
blood flow to the heart. The nitroglycerine is converted to
nitric oxide, which relaxes blood vessels and in turn reduces
the workload of the heart.

Protein Metabolism L-Arginine is a
key nutrient in the energy generating Krebs cycle, where it
participates in the detoxification of ammonia. Ammonia is a
toxic by product of energy metabolism. It is converted to urea
and eliminated from the body. Any L-Arginine not
converted to urea enters general circulation, where it is
distributed to various tissues and metabolized for other uses
such as protein synthesis.

Habits What I Want For You

Think for a moment about your Self. Is there something that you would like to have, somewhere you would like to go, or something you would like to do? What is holding you back? I can probably guess at the possible answers:”Not enough money.” “Not enough time.” “I couldn’t do that!”

At the risk of going out on a limb, I am going to suggest that the only thing holding you back from doing what you would like … is you!

Every one of us was born with the power to change our lives. All of us have seen seemingly ordinary people become superheroes. Why is this? Something happens in their lives that makes them suspend belief long enough to act unconsciously. When this happens, they are able to access this power and perform extraordinary feats.

Our minds are a recording device. We store away everything we read, see, hear, or otherwise experience in our lives from before we come into the world. During this time we also form opinions with the use of this information and from the influences of others. From opinions and beliefs come habits. Habits then become our life - just day after day habits!

Have you ever tried to break a habit? It’s not easy! That is because a habit is much easier to do than NOT do. To change a habit means you have to change your belief! Now we are back where we started. If there is something you truly want in your life, you can get it.

From the time I was a little boy, I wanted to be a sailor on a sailboat. I would tell everybody I was going to sail around the world. Many people told me then I could not do that. What is funny is that many people today tell methe same thing although we built a sailboat and sailed 15,000 miles in seven years. My beliefs were (and are) very strong.

Just in the last few years, we had decided we wanted to see what it was like to be involved in horses, training and lessons. I honestly do not remember one person who did not say “That is too hard. You won’t make any money.” We love our new horse ranch! We learned a long time ago that belief comes from within, and not from others.

The very first step is to change your belief. Believe that it is possible. One of the most powerful things you can do for someone is to allow them the freedom to change their belief and their thinking process. This can be as simple as the statement - “What I want for you is”.

When hearing this statement, the mind will take that information in and bounce it around for a while. It might, with a bit of help from your Self, begin to change your belief that a thing is impossible, and begin to believe that it is possible … even reachable.

Once your intentions to the Universal Power is clear, then this Power has no choice but to help you by presenting opportunities for you. (You do have to be clear enough to see the opportunities and you must act!)

Think of all you can do! What is it that you would truly love to do?

I want that for you!*As always,Your online friend and coach,

SPAM Issues that You Must Be Aware of

SPAM! You hear about it all the time. But what exactly is it?

SPAM is ANY unsolicited or unwanted message received via email. It is untargeted, and sent to people who have expressed no interest in receiving info on your product or service.

When a SPAM complaint is filed, it is up to the ISP and web-hosting companies to determine what is and is not, SPAM. Often providers terminate website or dial up access based on just one complaint. Providers must strictly enforce their terms or they will face action by their upstream providers.

Normally, the email addresses that make up SPAM mailing lists are picked at random. A good example of this are the CD’s you see advertised with millions of email addresses. Do NOT buy these. These are emails harvested off the internet and you will be spamming these people.

Sometimes people new to the internet believe that since email is free, they should blast out their ads to as many people as possible. After all, the more mail that goes out, the better the chances of getting a sale.

The reality is very different. People sending out millions of email this way usually get only a few orders, if any. More importantly, they get many recipients upset by sending out this unwelcome message. Normally the offender’s ISP will immediately shut him down, usually without asking questions first.

The best way to protect yourself is to be very careful of who you send your email to. You also need to be aware of what your follow up messages to people should contain. They MUST have:

Valid “from” address

Valid “reply to” address

Valid sender information including the name of the company or individual that sent the message

Valid removal instructions to instantly remove any individual upon request. This is VERY important!

If all these are present, and the mail is sent with the prior permission from the recipient, then the mail being sent in not SPAM.

Of course in the real world, things aren’t always so cut and dry.

For instance, what if it’s a one time mailing. You would have no need to put removal instructions, right? Wrong. This would be considered SPAM.

How about if you visit a person’s website and you mail them individually saying, “I visited your website and see you might be in need of my service”. This too, is considered SPAM.

Remember, be smart when you contact people!

You will probably never be able to totally protect yourself from SPAM complaints. Just take precautions in sending email and have procedures in place to deal with SPAM complaints. Once an abuse is reported, you can be certain that your host, internet provider, and others have received the same complaint. If you have a website, you should make sure your abuse@yourdomainname.com is working.

When a complaint is received, reply to the letter and include all addresses that also received the original complaint. Address the individual by their name, and provide a copy of the original request with date and other supporting information.

Tell the user that you have processed their removal instructions, and that the letter was requested and not SPAM. Be brief. Also, make sure you reference the URL where you post your terms of service and the URL where the user agreed to receive your mail.

Be sure you send the letter to all of the addresses listed in the original complaint immediately. Some providers will shut down a site as soon as a complaint is received so make sure you act fast.

To run an effective email campaign, be sure you send your mail to targeted prospects and avoid spamming internet users. Correct email marketing can produce amazing results and increase your bottom line dramatically, while SPAM will only lead to problems.

Identifying The Best Debt Consolidation Services

If you have even a little bit of credit card debt, chances are good that your mailbox is nearly overflowing with competing offers for debt consolidation services, and it can be quite difficult at times to sort out the best debt consolidation services from all the rest.

It is important to know what to look for, and to know what you need, before seeking the services of a debt consolidation or similar service.

Making Sure You Stay Out Of Debt For The Long Term

Perhaps the most important thing to know when you it comes to debt consolidation services is that such services serve as the first step toward getting debt free and staying debt free.

The next step is to make sure you stay out of debt for the long term.

Getting And Using Feedback From Other Customers

Of course getting out of debt is the necessary first step, and that is why it is so important to choose debt consolidation services based on their track record of success and the satisfaction of past clients.

It is always a good idea to ask for references from any of the debt consolidation services you are considering, and it is just as important to follow up with those references.

It is important to ask former clients what they liked, and what they did not like, about the services they received. This kind of honest feedback from former customers is one of the best ways to make sure you have found the debt consolidation services you need.

Sitting Down For A Face To Face Meeting With The Debt Consolidation Service

It is also important to sit down for a face to face meeting with the debt consolidation services you are considering, and to make sure you are comfortable with the employees you meet with.

After all, you will be sharing some of your most sensitive and personal financial information with those debt consolidation services and it is important to have a good comfort level and a level of trust built up with the company you choose to handle your debt situation.

What To Do After You Are Out Of Debt

It is also important for the debt consolidation services you are considering to offer some sort of education on remaining debt free.

Classes on budgeting, personal finance and handling credit wisely are what separate the best debt consolidation services from all the rest, so it is important to look for these elements when choosing between debt consolidation services.

Is Your Mutual Fund Or Stock Trying To Tell You Something?

As I mentioned in my last message, if the support line of your mutual fund or your stock is broken, beware! This is a very clear signal you should be hedging your position, and perhaps consider selling a portion (or maybe even the entire) position. Breaking the support line is the ultimate sign that supply is now clearly in command. Your principal is now at risk.

Too much supply, and not enough demand, will bring lower prices. That is not my theory.

That is an economic law.

Summer 2003: Krispy Kreme is on the cover of a major financial magazine as “the hottest brand in America” and the only Krispy Kreme store in New Jersey opened. People had lined up overnight to buy their doughnuts at this store! But sell signals began to appear.

Do you remember the very first time the company missed their quarterly earnings forecast? They explained it away on the “low-carb diet” fad!

By the time the real story broke the next year, about some very real accounting issues, the stock had already been sliced in half.

The support line had been broken back in March 2004, at 34. This week, as they closed the New Jersey shop and carried away all the signs and equipment, the stock is just $6.00.

Maybe this is too dramatic an example.

Take a look at a big blue chip, widely held stock. Merck broke through it’s support line in August 2003 at $52. Since then, it has dropped to the mid 20’s. It now flirts with $30.

Regarding Merck, keep in mind that Vioxx was withdrawn in September 2004. But the stock broke support a year earlier in August, 2003. How did the market know? Maybe it did, maybe it didn’t. But by the time the Vioxx story broke, in late summer 2004, supply was firmly in control. No demand whatsoever to prop it up. The stock dropped even further, from $44 to the mid 30’s on the Vioxx withdrawal.

Hey, Merck is a fine company with GREAT fundamentals. The stock has struggled for lots of reasons. All of which is unimportant.

Remember, Wall Street is a huge voting machine. Crowds are often wiser than individuals and their opinions. So stocks like Merck can have terrific fundamentals…and yet their stock can be sliced in half.

And we can see it, LIVE, when stocks break the support line.

From my perspective, as your advisor, I have a tough job. I’ll call you, seemingly out of the blue, and tell you we need to get defensive with (or maybe even sell) company XYZ’s stock.

It could be a stock you’ve owned for years. It might be the single biggest investment you hold. Maybe you inherited the stock from your parents, or perhaps you even worked there, or know someone who works there.

Regardless, when a stock breaks through the support line,
it is a major red flag and should not be ignored.

We often don’t know the reason for the decline, and may not know for some time. There may not even be a news story about it. But we know that supply has taken over and lower prices often follow. And since it is my job to protect what you’ve worked hard to get, we sometimes have to make tough decisions. Without all the answers. If we waited for the news with stocks like Krispy Kreme and Merck, we’d be in serious trouble.

Coaching for Physicians

Filed under:House Of Self Improvement — posted on @ 2:28 am

Is Having a Professional Coach a Solution to Optimizing your Practice’s Performance?

“What do you do?”

The proverbial question we get asked day in and day out by strangers, acquaintances, family, and friends. We are conditioned to answer with our current job or career.

Thanks to an anticipated, planned for and welcomed career change, my new answer is some version of “I am a professional coach.”

And the standard response back is, “Really, for what sport?”

“The game of life,”

I say and then the conversation either stops in its tracks, or takes off to some very interesting place.

And in the ensuing conversation, I tell them about this relatively new profession called “coaching” which most often has an adjective in front of coaching such as life, professional, executive, business or other such phrases that identify the coach’s niche.

I appreciate the opportunity to have this conversation with you via this newsletter, and hope the information shared will tell what a coach is, and how enhancing your coaching skills or engaging a coach might help improve the performance of your medical practice, and might even be a solution for helping your disgruntled, irritable, difficult to get along with physician, or perhaps the “newbie” physician who is awestruck with the transition from residency.

“What is a coach?”

A coach is your champion; partner; advisor; guide; counselor; consoler; touchstone; personal listener; confidante; teacher or as one coach puts it, “the gardener of your mind.” A coach helps you enhance the quality of your professional and personal lives, and reach peak performance and your ultimate potential.

So as you can surmise, coaching is a dynamic process of discovery, growth and development. Coaching creates an environment where there is freedom from judgment and from expectation, yet one of accountability and growth. In a coaching relationship, it is safe to question, appear vulnerable, observe, explore, experiment, learn and change. The process is designed to ensure lasting change and promote continuous growth.

In the hectic, demanding world of health care, professionals and leaders must find a way of staying on top of the surf, so that they are not sucked down and out by the riptide. A coach helps his client ride the wave, navigate through the rough waters, and enjoy the ride. There are so many reasons for physicians to feel disenchanted with their chosen profession, their calling. Having a coach helps them get back in touch with their passion for being a healer.

“So, a coach is like a therapist?”

Therapists typically work with people who need help becoming emotionally healthy. They deal with past issues and how to overcome them. So therapists tend to work with dysfunctional people to get them back to functional. Coaching is action oriented. It is about achieving growth through identifying and reaching goals, rather than by working through past issues. So a coach helps people go from functional to exceptional.

Another interesting distinction is that a coach is not a mentor although a coaching relationship has some characteristics of mentoring. Most often, a mentor is someone in your company who is higher up in the organizational structure, and is bestowing knowledge upon you to prepare you for greater responsibility and upward movement. In contrast, a coaching relationship is a partnership which draws on the wisdom and the knowledge of both parties. The coach does not have an agenda other than what his client wants.

“OK, I understand, but what application does it have to my business world?”

Executive coach

is the term most frequently used to refer to coaches who work with businesses, professionals or in your case, medical practices. In essence, instead of two parties, there are three—the company, the client and the coach. The leaders of the most successful companies recognize that the attraction, development, motivation and retention of highly talented people are the biggest contributors to maximizing the company’s success. They see the engagement of a coach as a proactive, positive way to help an employee, most often a manager or a professional, reach certain goals, change some behaviors, or develop specific management competencies. The employee agrees to these expectations and to working with a coach; and the employer engages the coach for the employee. The confidentiality of the coaching conversation remains sacrosanct; the employer is notified only if the employee is not participating.

In the business arena, a coach is sometimes referred to as a consultant. While there are some similarities, as importantly, there are some key differences. A consultant brings expertise, and thus answers to the proposed question or challenge. Typically, he then leaves the company with a report and recommendations to implement. A coach has expertise and answers; however, he works with you to identify the answers that will work best for the company and then stays through the implementation steps to ensure the changes materialize and the results are realized.

“So an executive coach can help me improve the performance of my people and thus, my bottom line?”

Yes, executive coaching is an investment in human capital just like traditional training and education programs. In fact, coaching and training frequently go hand in hand and studies have shown that doing so improves productivity 88% versus 22% with training alone. (Public Personnel Management, Winter 1997 v26 n4 p4610) The coaching assists his client in overcoming the obstacles that otherwise would prevent him from inculcating the imparted knowledge. Humans are creatures of habit, and we all know that breaking habits and embracing new ones is a great challenge. A coach helps us get out of our own way, so that we can reach for and accomplish greater things.

“You know in my practice, our focus is on teamwork. How does an executive coach help with that?”

Actually the principles applied to coaching individuals also apply to coaching groups or teams of people. A coach can assist a team in optimizing the communication amongst the members and maximizing the synergy of the group. As a result, performance and outcomes are maximized—which is critical in today’s world of declining reimbursements and increasing malpractice premiums. Especially with teams, coaching helps shorten the learning and the doing curves, so minimizing the investment of time and expenses while optimizing results.

“Gosh, I am now thinking that I would really enjoy working with a coach.”

Actually, many executives/CEOs work with coaches for they are frequently the “lone man on the totem pole”. Being a practice manager means you are the “lone man,” with many unofficial “bosses” –that is a huge challenge to navigate alone. Some of your physicians may feel the same way. A coach gives you someone to bounce ideas off of; express concerns and fears; brainstorm ways of handling difficult issues; role play difficult conversations; etc. Using a coach actually helps reduce your stress. Of course you have colleagues and others that assist you, but the differentiating factor for a coach is that he does not have an agenda, or a “stake in the game”, and thus, is all about you.

“How do I learn more or find a coach?”

The International Coaching Federation, www.coachfederation.org, is the recognized organization that most professional coaches belong to. The site has more information about coaching as well as a list of coaches by area. The nice thing about coaching is that the most common medium of delivery is the phone. Majority of coaches offer a free
introductory session, and are truly interested in educating others about coaching. You can also download a handbook on executive coaching at www.executivecoachingforum.com.

How to Wind a Cuckoo Clock

We have a lot of clocks in our home. Most of them make some sort
of noise on the hour (steam trains, cartoon characters, birds,
dogs, horses, wild animals; I’m not kidding!), some of them on
the half-hour as well, and one that even chimes on the quarter
hour. We just like clocks. Needless to say, we are usually aware
of the time! Some of my favorites are the cuckoo clocks that we
purchased on a trip to the Black Forest, and they needed some
TLC: cleaning, oiling, and adjusting.

Enter Skip, the clock repairman who believes in the long-lost
art of house calls. He took the clocks back to his shop and
fixed them up beautifully. When he returned them, he placed them
back on the wall with loving care and proceeded to explain the
“proper” way to wind them.

1. Be sure to pull straight down or the chain can come off of
the gear or the weight may bang against the wall, leaving a mark.

2. Pull only one chain at a time because pulling more than one
at a time

a) causes the chains to be pulled at an angle and

b) puts too much stress on the hanger on the wall and/or the
back of the clock.

3. Don’t pull them too quickly because they may come off of
their gears.

4. When setting the clock it is better to turn the hands
counter clock-wise because of the nature of the internal
mechanism.

…and so on, and so forth. For about 15 minutes, Skip explained
the finer points of something that seemed so simple and so
obvious, that I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

It recently dawned on me that this experience serves as a great
illustration of two important points. First of all, the
importance of education; there is always a “right” way and a
“wrong” way to do just about anything, regardless of how simple
and obvious it may seem. It is unlikely that what you are trying
to do in your business has never been tried before. Why suffer
through the mistakes that others have made when they did what
you are doing? Do everything you can to learn from other
people’s experience and save yourself the grief of repeating
their mistakes. I used to pull all three chains at once; it
never occurred to me that the back of the clock could break
under the strain. He’s seen it happen. I’m glad that I learned
from his experience before the clock came crashing down because
a), the falling clock would probably break the glass table
beneath it, b) I might be physically injured if hit by the clock
or flying glass and c), I cherish my clocks and would hate to
lose one. Find seminars, classes, tapes, books, or websites that
can help you avoid the avoidable. Your time and money will be
well spent.

The other important point is that you can learn and grow from
the most unlikely places. Keep your eyes and ears open; you just
never know when a “Skip” will waltz into your life for even a
brief moment and leave you with a tidbit that will change you
forever.

Are Soy Candles Better than Your Average Candle?

Everyone loves candles and they are a great way to add warmth and comfort to your home. You even have a few choices of candles such as regular wax candles and soy candles. Candles are affordable and they can last for a very long time. The best part about candles is that they look good both lit and unlit. Oddly enough most people, me included, own candles that they never intend to light for fear of ruining their beauty.

Candles are both practical and gorgeous and of all the candles on the market soy candles are the most sought after these days. Everyone is wanting to get themselves some fantastic soy candles. Only soy candles are healthier.

Did you know that candles can be dangerous to your health, the health of your children and even your pets? Some candles have been known to kill pet birds! Paraffin is not good for people to be inhaling and some candles are even made with lead wicks in them. Can you image how much harm could be done with a lead wick?

If you were to purchase soy candles you would not have these types of worries. These soy candles were created to combat the growing problem of inferior cheap candles. Now you can have all the glory of good candles and candle light without the dangerous components. You can even get wonderfully scented soy candles.

There are so many reasons for you to choose soy candles over regular run of the mill candles. For instance, did you know that soy candles can last twice as long as other candles? They are so affordable when you look at them this way. You will be able to get twice as much use out of your candles when they are soy candles. And since they burn slower and longer the smell will be even better.

Have you ever noticed that some scented candles get overpowering in their smells? That is because the candles burn so hot and fast. When you are using soy candles this is not a problem. Since the candle is burning at a lower temperature the scent will be dispersed at a much better rate, one that will keep your home smelling fresh and clean all day long.

The biggest complaint that most people have about regular candles is the soot factor. How many times have you had to try and scrub off soot after lighting a candle? Well, the good news is that you will never have to do this again when you switch over to soy candles. Soy candles have no soot production and they will never stain anything at all.

Soy is also a renewable resource. It grows in the USA with ease and there is a plentiful amount to it. You will never have to worry about hurting the environment when you are using soy candles. You will be giving people new and better jobs and helping the world at the same time. Soy candles are really the best way to go and if you have not checked them out yet, what are you waiting for?
