Why You Need Boat Insurance

Filed under:A Life Of Leisure — posted on June 18, 2007 @ 11:03 pm

Some people simply overlook boat insurance. They think that nothing bad is going to happen, when in reality, bad things often happen involving boats!

If you own a boat, you need boat insurance. In fact, many states now require boat owners to carry Watercraft Liability insurance before they transport or operate a boat. If your boat has been financed, your lender will almost always require you to carry full coverage boat insurance.

Again, most people don’t think anything bad will happen – but bad things do indeed occur!

Vandalism is one problem that you may encounter. This is especially true if you dock your boat in a marina. Vandalism can also occur when you park your boat at your home, or at a hotel when traveling.

When you shop for insurance, make sure that vandalism is covered on your policy. Most issuers of boat insurance will only offer you the Watercraft Liability – but in most cases, you need more coverage than that! Theft is another possibility. Cars are stolen all the time – but boats are stolen as well. In fact, stealing a boat is easier than stealing a car!

Boat insurance should cover you in the event of vandalism, theft, sinking, fire, storms, capsizing, stranding, collision, and explosion. Furthermore, the insurance should cover the boat, the motor, and the trailer used to transport the boat. The boat should be covered no matter who is operating the boat, as long as they are legally allowed to operate the vessel.

Boat insurance will typically cover you in the event of malfunction as well. If something happens to your motor, it should be covered by your insurance. It should also cover you in the event that your boat needs to be towed back to shore.

What you are covered for depends on what type of coverage you purchased through your insurance agent. For this reason, it is important to know what type of coverage is available. Not all insurance companies will offer all types of coverage, but they will offer Watercraft Liability and Watercraft Medical payments.

Watercraft liability covers you just like car liability insurance protects you in the event of an accident where you are found to be at fault. Medical payments will cover medical expenses incurred by you and the occupants of your boat that are the result of a boating accident in the covered water vessel.

Optional insurance usually includes coverage for reasonable repairs, emergency services to your boat, motor, or boat trailer, and wreck removal. Wreck removal is very important coverage to have. If you boat sinks, it will need to be raised before an insurance company can access the damages and pay your claim. This is very expensive, and in most states, the law requires you to remove wrecked or sunken vessels.

Boats may be luxury items – but they are very expensive luxury items.

Repairing or replacing a boat may not be something that you can easily afford – but in most cases, you will find that boat insurance is quite affordable. However, if you are thinking in terms of cost, and you think that you cannot afford the boat coverage, you can be certain that you will not be able to afford to repair or replace the boat either!

No matter how you look at it, you need boat insurance, even if you just purchase the watercraft liability coverage. Again, most states now require this liability coverage for water vessels, and if the boat is financed, the optional coverage may be required as well.

Discuss your boat insurance coverage needs with your insurance agent to determine what coverage is right for you and your boat.

Getting The Best Mobile Phone Deal Available

Filed under:Hardware Infos — posted on @ 10:36 pm

The mobile phone marketplace has rapidly evolved into one of the most competitive consumer marketplaces out there. At no time is this more evident than around the time when your existing mobile phone contract is set to expire. It is interesting, if a little infuriating to receive an avalanche of calls from networks and resellers all offering you different deals at different costs and varying packages. For those of us who are not particularly interested it can be easy just to let your existing contract roll on for another year and accept the first terms that come your way. That way you can avoid the boredom of sitting through some poor workers sales pitch every night.

But taking the easy route and allowing the network to roll over the contract without reviewing the terms available on other contracts and providers is tantamount to shooting yourself in the foot – or the wallet at least. Although I am not particularly interested in fervently searching high and low for the best deal I also have no interest in paying too much for a service. So, as with any major purchase, a bit or research – or at least knowing where to look can help to either save you a bit of cash or get a little more for your monthly contract costs.

The networks are working hard to differentiate themselves but their position of market dominance that was taken for granted only a few years ago is being eroded and the consumer options are wider than ever. Competition of tariffs between the networks is supplemented by the work of the resellers – both high street and online who buy in bulk from the networks at discount and pass some of the discount on the customer, often undercutting the original network deals. High street mobile phone dealers increase user choice simply by stocking offers from various networks to allow the customer to compare the best mobile phone deals.

The online marketplace has expanded rapidly over the last few years and these retailers claim to offer the very best mobile phone deals due to their ability to undercut the High street simply by having lower overheads. Again the deals are the same as the networks and include the latest handset models, accessories and extras but at a cheaper price than dealing directly with the network. Because the resellers deal with all of the major networks, you can compare mobile phone deals to get the deal that suits your lifestyle and your wallet. A number of online resources have hints and tips on getting the best mobile phone deals and taking some points on board from these should help to save you a bit of cash.

Choosing a Spanish Translation Provider

Filed under:Life Of Language — posted on @ 9:25 pm

Why a Spanish Translation?
Over 350 million people in the world speak Spanish as their first language. If we include the number of people who are fluent in Spanish as a second language, the total number of Spanish speakers in the world is well over 400 million people. The Hispanic market is today the most rapidly expanding market in the United States. It is estimated that by 2050, there will be 56 million Hispanics/Latinos; by 2050, 30% of the entire U.S. population will be Hispanic.

Human Translation vs. Machine Translation?
Machine translation (MT) is a form of translation where a computer program analyses the text in one language — the “source text” — and then attempts to produce another, equivalent text in another language — the “target text” — without human intervention. Although this system can help with specific words and some phrases in much the same way as a dictionary, it shouldn’t be used to replace a human translator. Computers do not have the ability to deal appropriately with the complexities of a language such as ambiguity, syntactic irregularity, anglicisms, false cognates, context, etc. A machine translation is similar to the one made by a human who lacks a deep knowledge of the target language.

Translation agency or independent translator?
Spanish Translation agencies provide a number advantages, and services that individuals cannot:
Screening of translators: While some Spanish translation companies maintain an in-house team of native Spanish speakers, others create a network of freelance translators who they employ on a per-project basis. As long as the projects are coordinated and managed efficiently, this allow a Spanish translation company to match projects with translators who have relevant knowledge or experience.
Proofreading: Most agencies have a proofreader other than the translator to review the translation prior to delivery at no extra cost. In this way, you can rest assured that the target document is error-free and is thoroughly checked for uniformity.
Meeting tight deadlines: Because of their pool of translators, agencies have the resources to take on complex projects and deliver them in a timely manner.

Things you should keep in mind when selecting a Spanish Translation Agency
There are thousands of translation agencies and identifying a good English-Spanish translation supplier is a big task. Translation clients usually don’t know what they are paying for, especially when they don’t know the target language (the language into which a text written in another language is to be translated).
Are translations handled by Spanish Native Speakers?
The language translator should always translate INTO his or her mother tongue. Only a native speaker can come closest to creating a translation that “sounds” so natural that the reader is not even aware that it is a translation. Mistakes can have ruinous consequences.
Two Examples:
When Chevrolet introduced the Nova to the South American market, sales were dismal. Intended buyers in these countries were perplexed when the car went on the market because “No va” in Spanish means “it won’t go”
An American T-shirt maker in Miami printed shirts for the Spanish market which promoted the Pope’s visit. Instead of “I saw the Pope” (el Papa), the shirts read “I Saw the Potato” (la papa).
How much will the translation cost?
Translations are usually charged per word. Be sure that the Spanish translation provider charges the job based on the number of words in the source text. Many companies give you an estimate and the final quote is based on the target document. With this method you never know the final quote until the job is done and this may lead into abuse on the part of the translator as he/she can use longer sentences on purpose, degrading the quality of the target text and increasing your price.
References and samples
Don’t be afraid to ask for references or samples. References are perhaps the most important way to ensure a quality job. If you have knowledge of the target language or know someone who does, samples may also be good. A reputable agency will not hesitate to give you references and show you samples of previous English-Spanish translations.

Pocket bike stores are mushrooming at an astonishing rate in response to the growing popularity of this sport. A majority of these pocket bike stores, online or at a physical site now offer a broader range of services for rookies, and dedicated hobbyists of this sport.

Here’s a basic list of services to look for in choosing which pocket bike stores to patronize, in order to make your purchasing decision easier.

1. Check out whether any of these pocket bike stores offer a wide range of brands and accessories that will suit your taste and budget. Ask if they have financing schemes.

2. If from among the list of pocket bike stores, you do pick one with an online presence, check out to see if they have a reviews section on their website. For this will provide you additional information about various pocket bikes. Be sure to ask the e-store for their physical address and phone numbers. Legitimate businesses even start ups need a physical presence. If it’s a store with no online presence, ask from any of these pocket bike stores you’ve walked into, if they can refer you to their customers.

3. Compare between these pocket bikes stores; their shipping policy and charges, as well as their capacity to ship merchandise to your location.

4. Compare among these pocket bike stores their customer support and after sales services, their refund policy and shipping costs if you are dissatisfied with the merchandise. Another useful service they should be able to provide you are toll free numbers, and email addresses you can write if you have any questions. For online stores, do they have live chat support?

This will enable you to relax and have fun driving your pocket bike, knowing you enjoy full customer support from reliable pocket bike stores.

When the Editor is NOT the Enemy

Filed under:Living With Publishers — posted on @ 7:32 pm

They can be mean, unethical and downright unprofessional. But
not all editors fit that bill. In fact, most editors would
rather give you money that take it, make no changes than rewrite
whole pieces two hours before deadline, and accept every piece
of crap than start their mornings sending out rejection slips.
But step into an editor’s shoes, and you’ll know why that’s not
only hard, it’s just plain impossible!

Here are the most common complaints writers have, and why
editors aren’t always guilty of them.

Completely Changing your Work An editor I frequently work with
was in distress. One of her regulars had just written to
complain about his perfectly brilliant beginning being chopped
off. “They sometimes don’t get our style,” she told me over
lunch. “We need more quotes, we put them in. We need a stronger
beginning; we change it. There’s nothing much I can do about it.
It’s the way we work.” But while this editor was very
forthcoming about her reasons, and gave the writer an
explanation, you’ll usually get no further correspondence. That
doesn’t mean that they don’t understand the anguish you go
through. But they’ve got word limits, voice and style
limitations and a dozen other factors to keep in mind. And they
simply don’t have the time to offer explanations to each writer.

Paying Less or not Paying at all Most writers believe (or are
led to believe) that editors just don’t want to dish out the
cash. Sure, if they’re running a small business from home and
can hardly pay their bills, they probably won’t. But editors in
big offices don’t really care whether you earn $100 or $1,000.
After all, they’re not the ones paying from their pockets!

I was in a publisher-editor meeting the other day, and one
common concern was raised—why weren’t suppliers (including
freelancers) paid on time? A complaint unanimously raised by…
editors!

An important thing to remember is that while it may appear so to
us, editors aren’t really the ones calling the shots all the
time. That’s the publisher’s job. So hating the editor’s guts
won’t get you anywhere. While some editors may be creeps, most
of them are on your side! So, if you want more money, just ask
for it. Chances are the editor is the only one who can help you
get it.

Not Responding They’d love to, you know. But there’s only so
much they can do. And while each e-mail you send will determine
where your next paycheck comes from, an editor will get paid
regardless of the number of queries rejected. Their job is
putting together quality content. No one’s going to promote them
for being nice to freelancers. It’s a simple matter of
priorities. And when the choice is between finishing up the
issue and answering yet another freelancer’s query, get real—the
editor will finish up and go home.

Killing Articles We tossed a coin. The losing editor would have
to tell the freelance writer that his article had been killed.
That too after we asked him to send us a dozen writing samples,
come up with a dozen off-beat ideas, get a feel of our style and
send us a 600-word piece. We’d even negotiated the price. It
would have taken him at least a day’s work, if not more. We felt
cruel, but decided that the guy had potential for future
assignments.

I lost the toss and sat down to draft the e-mail. I explained at
length how our policies had changed, told him that we’d be
willing to give more assignments and even added a touch of
humor. But the writer was obviously blinded. He thought of me as
the devil. And by doing so, he’d just lost a perfectly good
opportunity for more assignments.

Editors aren’t out to take advantage of freelancers or make
their lives miserable. In fact, if you get to know them a
little, you’ll find that they’re often a very friendly bunch.
Stop looking at your editor as the enemy, and you might just
find a friend.

Bowflex for Baby Boomers

Filed under:Shopping Infos — posted on @ 7:19 pm

There are hundreds and maybe thousands of physical fitness guru’s all claiming to have the perfect answer, the “magic bullet” for physical fitness and a solution to a healthier body and lifestyle. Well, I’m not going to claim to have the perfect answer! However, I do have a few tips on an easy to use piece of exercise equipment that may be one of the best for all ages and is particularly suitable for those of us who are either baby boomers or a bit more seasoned. It’s the Bowflex…any version but a basic machine such as the Bowflex Sport is a perfect place to start.

So what’s the catch here? Absolutely no catch whatsoever….. just an enthusiasm to share some ideas on perhaps one of the most efficient, versatile and affordable exercise machines available for home use. The Bowflex combines aerobic and strength training with a smooth pulley and power rod resistance system that’s easy set up. You can easily switch resistance with the power rods through a wide range of motions for a complete strength and aerobic workout. Now don’t get me wrong on the expected results. The Bowflex ads show smiling, well muscled young people whom we all would like to look like, no matter what age. Well, now you may just want to get back some muscle tone and some of that past strength and endurance you once had. At any rate, here we are at 55, 60, 65 or older and card carrying members of AARP. Most of us simply want to maintain or improve our strength, muscle tone and respiratory efficiency. Today many doctors and physical fitness experts are espousing weight training and especially the use of free weights as we age. Everyone now acknowledges that maintaining and / or building our strength is critical in later years. We will certainly function with greater confidence and renewed strength but we will also be less likely to fall and if we do, less likely to suffer fractures since strength training adds to our bone mass. What we don’t hear talked about too frequently is the potential of injury with free weights if not properly supervised. Added to the injury possibility, there is also the need for other pieces of equipment such as various benches and supports in order to get a full range of activity with free weights.

So, let’s talk about the Bowflex. Perhaps you’ve seen the infomercials and watched as the group of well muscled young men and women gathered around a Bowflex machine and marveled at how easy it works and the quality of the workout it provides. So, how does this apply to you…at 55, 60, 65 years or older?

First, you can safely use the Bowflex without needing a partner. However before staring a program check with your physician to insure that you have no physical ailments that would preclude vigorous exercise. The Bowflex is a home device and since it’s in your home, it’s available at anytime. I must caution you on the hype of “now you can use it anytime of your choosing”. That may be correct, but to be successful you must establish a set time every day for your workout. Once you start slipping or changing times, you run the very real danger of skipping days and then a week or more and then suddenly you have no set program and you’re back to being a couch potato.

The Bowflex machine comes with a very nice manual of exercises and instructions and most will also have an instructional DVD. Let’s walk through some Bowflex 101 in the real world and set some realistic goals and simple to follow instructions:

1.Maintain a set time schedule either daily or every other day. Many prefer early morning exercise routines so that it doesn’t get cancelled out later in the day by unexpected events…..or lost will power. Early workouts also tend to set a positive, go get ‘em attitude when those endorphins kick in from good prolonged vigorous exercise. Many experts say that the most effective time for the body to exercise is mid-afternoon and the least effective is at night. Working out late in the evening may also cause some sleep disruption.

2.Review the exercise manual that Bowflex provides but don’t become a slave to the described routines. While the programs were developed by experts, let your own sense of what’s working be your guide.

3.After reviewing the manual, establish your beginning program routine and stick to it for at least two full weeks or longer without deviation. Maintaining a consistent pattern will allow you to assess whether the program you’ve selected is comfortable for you and not too boring. It’s important to make the workout interesting as well as challenging. Boredom can lead to you dropping out so don’t let that happen!

4.Design your program to include aerobic as well as strength activities. While the Bowflex will greatly assist in developing strength, the aerobic exercises are terrific and important.

5.Start off with easy resistance power rods. Remember, this is going to be a lifestyle addition and not a quick fix so there is no reason to use too much weight resistance at the beginning. It is best to get comfortable with how the Bowflex operates using lower resistance and then gradually increase the weight / resistance.

6.Don’t feel compelled to “do the manual”. Select the exercises that work well with your strength and flexibility and rotate through them. Make sure, though, that you balance upper body, arms, legs and abdominals in your program.

7.Make sure you take advantage of the aerobic rowing motion. The seat glides easily and the resistance power rods and pulleys are exceptionally smooth in operation.

8.Be Creative! In a short time, you’ll be totally at ease and be able to handle any of the Bowflex routines. When that happens, you’re now ready to mix and match and create new routines on your own.

So, while this is an exercise machine for all ages, the Bowflex from my experience is exceptionally well suited for the great generation of Baby Boomers and beyond. It’s simplicity of set up, easy switching process from one exercise routine to another, wide range of weight resistance and easy fluid motion give this machine an A++ rating in my book!. While this is not an advertisement, you may want to check out the Bowflex website or other websites that offer exercise equipment. At any rate, get started on a healthier life style.

Be active, be healthy and be happy!

How to Cure Lower Back Pain In Days

Filed under:Hall Of Medical Resources — posted on @ 6:14 pm

My husband had lower back pain for 10 years. X-rays had revealed that he had a slightly slipped disc in his back. He had been to see Chiropractors, Osteopaths, Sports Therapists, Acupuncturists, Physiotherapists and nothing had worked.

Eventually he allowed the pain to control him and he grew frustrated and worried daily about how he would play with our children when the time came.

After 10 years and an unknown amount spent on professionals we were willing to try anything.

We experimented with various techniques and this is what we found:

When we focus on something, we give it energy.

When we focus on pain, we attract pain.

When we focus on love, we attract love.

Our bodies are designed to be healthy- If your body is in a state of dis-ease it is trying to tell you something is wrong.

There may be various reasons why your body has created this dis-ease and it is up to you to play detective. In my husband’s case it was more than one reason.

Firstly, he lower back region of the body relates to support and finances. My husband has not had the support he needed from his family and friends and whenever we returned from a family visit his back was much worse.

Secondly, he might be creating the lower back pain in order to NOT participate. Now I know this might sound like self sabotage and that is EXACTLY what it is. In order for him to not make a fool of himself or fail at the activity he simply gave himself back pain as an excuse to not even try.

Now, you have to understand that this is all SUBCONSCIOUSLY. He did not “give” himself pain knowingly.

Your subconscious is immensely powerful.

It has a primary goal: To make whatever you believe to be true.

Say, “My back is killing me today” and it will probably hurt twice as much as it normally does.

Pay attention to your words and thoughts. Your subconscious is ALWAYS listening.

And that’s why we decided to use it to our advantage.

Affirmations. Ever heard of them? Yes, the mantras you recite over and over to yourself in the hope that what you say comes true.

Well, guess what?

They work!

He wrote the following on a small piece of cardboard and carried it in his pocket and every time he went to the bathroom he would repeat it over and over- about 50 – 100 times a day.

I LOVE BEING PAIN FREE AND BEING ABLE TO DO AND ENJOY ANYTHNG I WANT

And the lower back pain disappeared within 3 days and he is now able to do exercises (the “cobra pose” in Yoga is a great exercise for strengthening the lower back).

He still uses the affirmations and does 50 “cobra” repetitions a day and so far is still free from lower back pain.

What a pleasure!

Domain Name Registrars – The In’s And Out’s!

Filed under:Domaining — posted on @ 11:01 am

Do you want to have a domain name? Or, do you wish to register for your domain name? Well, that is not too hard though. With the presence of the domain name registrars, your desire for domain names will be made possible. But what really are domain registrars?

In a most concrete identification, the domain name registrars are actually companies that register domain names for those who love to own a domain name. And for everybody to comprehend the real nature of domain name registrars and the nature of their work and their role in domain name registration, one must then learn about the ICANN or the International Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers.

So speaking of the ICANN that plays a major part in the domain name registrars, it is necessary to know that it has two main responsibilities. One of those is to oversee the Domain Name System or DNS for the purpose of validating the division of the IP Addresses and domain names, verifying that each one is distinct. Such group then coordinates the distribution and mapping with each of the registry. Secondly, the ICANN is responsible of accrediting the domain name registrars.

Generally, the ICANN has particular criteria for the domain name registrars’ accreditation. It is commonly noted that once the domain name registrars are accredited, it is then a duty of the domain name registrars to sign a contract and agree to bear by the ICANN’s guidelines and procedures.

The next role of the domain name registrars that is involved in the process is the Registries. The domain name registrars then purchase domains from the Registries as the consumer requests them. It is interesting to know that the consumers may not register a domain name directly from the Registry, they must do so by the domain name registrars. The Registries just charge the domain name registrars for registration. And along with such responsibility, the domain name registrars as well update the domain name at the corresponding Registry whenever a contact or DNS change is created.

In case if there are requests for domain names, such groups then communicate with the respective Registry to make certain whether the requested domain name is available for purchase or already owned by another party. So it is understandable that if the requested domain name is available, the consumer is able to register the domain.

Such is the nature and the role of the domain name registrars in the world of domain names. So if you wish to own a domain name, then you know now where to request for it and where to find it.

Bleeding Edge or Expensive Enterprise Satellite Internet?

Filed under:WWW — posted on @ 8:47 am

The State of Satellite Internet in 2005

For those businesses unable can’t get T1, Cable or DSL internet service for less than half a year’s Gross Profit, vsat (very small aperture terminal) satellite internet is about the only way to obtain decent internet speed. Over the last two years or so many companies have advertised about upcoming solutions to this issue…after all, the business internet industry is huge and growing by giant leaps each year and there are potential profits out there.

Let’s take a look at what is currently available and what is on the way:

Available Ku Band Enterprise Systems

This is a “catch all” phrase covering the more expensive equipment and service offered by several large uplink comapnies. It is characterized by larger satellite dishes (typically 1.0 meter or larger), more powerful transmitters (at least 2 watts) and less populated transponders than the “residential” or “small business” setup’s available from Direcway, Starband and Wildblue. The result is more consistent, faster service…..what most businesses expect.

There are two general avenues you can take regarding speed and throughput: Shared or dedicated bandwidth - and the difference in price is staggering. For most business applications, shared bandwidth (the less expensive choice) will work fine - giving a company 1.5 kbps downloads and 256 kbps uploads over 90% of the time for prices in the $400-$1500 range. The crucial element of ANY offering is the “contention ratio” - how much they oversell the product or the number of concurrent users they allow on a transponder. Any company that does not put the ratio in writing is not worth doing business with - period…and any company with a contention ratio above 20-1 is not offering you true Enterprise service. With dedicated service (Guaranteed speeds) you will spend over $1,900 per month (up to several thousand per month), but will have service that is nearly bulletproof.

The most tested and dependable Enterprise setup available today in N. America is centered around a modem designed by iDirect Technologies http://www.idirect.net. This is a proven system that will give you what you pay for.

Other systems are coming into the marketplace like the ViaSat Surfbeam DOCSIS setup and another DOCSIS product from Telnor; however, this is very new technology and certainly qualifies as “Bleeding Edge”. Only three companies have the equipment to make it work right now and there are bumps in the road. Surfbeam and Telnor’s big promise is a better utilization of available ku bandwidth, but no field results have confirmed this yet to my knowledge.

If it provides similar speeds during field testing, it will force iDirect to rethink modem pricing as the DOCSIS setup can be installed for about $500-$1,000 less.

Wireless and Satellite Internet Technology On The Horizon

The Satellite Internet world could be turned on it’s head in the coming years as WIMAX emerges. It is a grand plan by Intel and others to cover very large areas of the world with a brand of microwave technology capable of sending data extremely fast to small antennas at homes and businesses. The big difference between WIFI and WIMAX is the distance covered by the main antenna…..the claim is 15-30 miles! Talk about bleeding edge….many of the “Big Boys” including Nokia and Cisco have abandoned plans to invest in it and speak of it as a bad business model to try to replace DSL. They point out that there are currently over 15 “standards” for the technology, not exactly a harmoneous start!

Ka band satellite internet for Enterprise has some real promise. The ability to “reuse” bandwidth, if the concept works, will enable companies to have T1 speeds or greater at any business location for much less than a T1 cost. A unit of SkyTerra Communications - the company managing Hughes Network Systems now, is working on advanced ka band spot beam technology to that end.

The greatest challange facing the satellite internet industry during the next 24 months is figuring out how to make profit…..in the absence of someone finding a business model that can show consistant profit, all of the transponder space allocated to internet will quickly be redeployed to HDTV or other types of profitable communication….bet on it!

Carbohydrates: So Simple Yet So Complex

Filed under:World Of Nutrition — posted on @ 6:19 am

The further on your read, you’ll begin to understand that everyone needs energy and the best source of energy is from carbohydrates. Roughly 50%-80% of your nutritional intake should come from carbohydrates! (not including any special needs cases if a person was carbohydrate sensitive).

Similar to amino acids, when you link various simple sugars together you get carbohydrates with different properties and effects on the body’s blood sugar levels.

Carbohydrates are classified into three categories:

Monosaccharides (glucose, galactose, fructose) are the sugars found in milk and fruits.

Disaccharides (sucrose, lactose) might be found in table sugars and milk sugars. They are a combination of a two simple sugars.

Polysaccharides (complex carbs, starches, fibers) come from whole grains, vegetables, nuts, some fruits and legumes. These are your complex carbs.

When you link different kinds of sugars together, you will get different kinds of products. For example when you combine glucose and fructose you get sucrose (table sugar).

You’ll read a lot about essential amino acids and essential fats but what you won’t read about in any fitness manuals or hear from any fitness experts is the essential carbohydrate. That’s because there is no such thing. There are just different carbohydrates with different properties that affect your energy levels.

Here’s a fact for you: Our bodies can only absorb monosaccharides (simple sugars).

[STOP and realize that complex carbs are just a series of 3 or more simple sugars bound together. As mentioned, complex carbs go by the alias, polysaccharides.]

This means if you eat a complex carb, your body will break down that complex carb into simple sugars and ultimately into blood sugar which can be used for many different functions. Depending on the carbohydrate you just ate and other factors, these carbohydrates will have different effects on blood sugar levels. Specifically how fast they rise and fall.

This ability of a carbohydrate to to raise blood sugar fast or slow is called the glycemic index (GI). The GI was created to track various foods effects on blood sugar at different rates.

The GI’s importance is related to the body’s blood sugar effects on insulin levels. Insulin is the primary hormone responsible for fat storage (along with many other functions). The GI was originally invented with the diabetic in mind because insulin levels can mean the different between life and death in such instances.

If you are still reading, you should at this point understand that complex carbohydrates have a more leveling effect on insulin and longer term energy. Because complex carbs are not continually ’spiking’ the insulin levels, you’ll send less signals to store fat.

Eating the right carbs will give you longer term energy and help to fight body fat storage!

Your probably wondering if there’s a simple example of this so you can skip today’s brief science lesson.

The starch in whole grains is an excellent example of a more complex carb compared to the monosaccharides like refined white flours or table sugars. This is why you always read about “staying away from refined and processed foods” as much as possible.

Now keep in mind that complex carbs require a prolonged digestion time (enzymatic process) and thus provide a slow, even and ideal flow of energy. This avoids any fluctuations in glucose (blood sugar) levels which can affect energy. Complex carbohydrates contain more nutrients and fiber.

Here’s a better overview of where you can find various carbohydrates in foods:

Complex carbohydrates, often referred to as “starchy” foods, include:

* breads

* cereals

* starchy vegetables

* legumes

* rice

* pastas

* some protein drinks

Simple carbohydrates that contain vitamins and minerals occur naturally in:

* fruits

* milk and milk products

* vegetables

Simple carbohydrates are also found in processed and refined sugars such as:

* candy

* table sugar

* syrups (not including natural syrups such as maple)

* regular carbonated beverages

* refined flours

* some processed foods

Bottom line: You want to get most of your carbohydrate energy from complex sources so that you have a long term energy flow. After a workout, it’s ideal to take in simple sugars to quickly replace glycogen stores.
