Reading has not yet gone out of style. In fact, millions of
people around the globe count reading as their number one way to
relax, learn new things, and share ideas with others in
discussion forums or book clubs. Most of us have a few books
lying around the house, whether they be children’s picture
stories or a well-worn dictionary. But where do you go to find a
good read when you want something new or different? Sure, you
can visit the library if you can remember that two-week return
date. If you want to purchase the latest bestseller or audio
book, though, check out some of the premier bookstore sites that
you can find online.

At Addall Book Search and Price Comparison
(http://www.amazon.com/), you can quickly find a certain book
you’ve heard about and want to read. The site will help you
locate new and used books, audio books, and a variety of topics
in print. You can even find out on which country’s currency the
book is priced. With more than 40 sites offering your choice
among millions of publications, you can spend hours searching
for a particular title or author, or just a few minutes placing
your order.

Another helpful book search site is Discount Search
(http://www.discount-search.com/cat/37) where you simply click
on the “Books” link that is located on the home page. From
Harlequin to academic textbooks, you can link to top booksellers
with huge selections and competitive pricing. With a few finger
clicks you can quickly locate the books you want or browse new
titles that catch your interest. You also can find useful
supplies like bookmarks, stationery, and theme mugs to augment
your personal reading time at home or while taking a break at
the office. Your book order can be quickly shipped to save time
and money when you avoid fighting traffic, fueling the car, and
waiting in checkout lines.

If you don’t like to read, now is the time to take up this
meaningful hobby. Research shows that people who stretch their
minds with ideas and language often manage to keep Alzheimer’s
Disease at bay longer than those who idle their time away. Books
help to make you an interesting person when you talk with
others. They expose readers to a plethora of perspectives and
issues. A book can become your best friend for life, one you
will want to return to now and then to get reacquainted once
more. Studies show that young children from birth and up can
benefit from being read to by, and later, from learning how to
enjoy reading on their own. Their language, problem solving, and
comprehension scores tend to be higher than those of
non-readers, and their overall grades are better, too.

Mastering a Foreign Language: How To Become A Brilliant Speaker, Part 7 of 7

Filed under:Life Of Language — posted on @ 10:52 am

‘You Are What You Believe’

You’re probably familiar with some of these clichés: You are
what you eat. You are what you read. You are who you spend time
with. There are a lot of ideas and sayings out there about who
you are, and although some of them hold a great deal of wisdom,
the one that rings true for me is, you are what you believe
yourself to be.

Your beliefs about yourself and your abilities are either the
dealmakers or the deal breakers.

No matter how great a language program you are in, no matter how
hard you try, no matter how many things you do great to master a
foreign language, if you don’t truly believe you have the
ability and the tenacity to do whatever it takes to master the
language, you are fighting a losing battle, uphill both ways,
barefoot, in the snow.

What you believe and what you expect are going to determine your
outcome. This is because what you believe determines what you
do. It determines what decisions to make, and what actions you
will take that will ultimately lead to your success or lack
thereof.

If you believe that you are capable of being a brilliant speaker
of a foreign language, and it is something you truly want to do, you
will automatically take steps that create that reality for
yourself. You will choose certain classes, materials,
friendships, practice patterns, strategies and behaviors that
make you into a brilliant speaker of that foreign language. The
outcome of becoming a brilliant speaker of that language is
inevitable! It will be as if being anything less than brilliant
mastery isn’t even an option for you.

This is one of the main reasons why envisioning
your way to fluency as discussed in Part 4 is such a powerful
success training tool, because when you use it you are training
your beliefs and expectations. You are training yourself to
expect the success that you desire and deserve.

What do you currently believe about your ability to master a
foreign language? How would you like to see that change? It all
starts with you.

Get an Uninterruptible Power Supply

Using an Uninterruptible Power Supply

You may have your computer, monitor, printer and other peripherals plugged into a power strip with surge suppression, but that won’t help if the power actually goes out. In the event of a power sag or blackout, whether it’s for a half-second or half an hour, your computer is about as useful as a boat anchor — unless you have an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) device.

A UPS is a device that protects your electronic devices from power outages, sags, and surges, and also acts as a battery backup in the event of a blackout. Like a power strip, the UPS plugs into the wall outlet and the devices you want to protect are plugged into the UPS. Typically the battery power of the UPS will allow you to operate your computer for 15-30 minutes during a power outage. If the outage lasts longer than that, at least you will have the opportunity to do an orderly shutdown with no data loss.

Look for a UPS that offers at least 600VA power handling capacity and the special cable and software that will automatically shut down your computer before the UPS batteries die, just in case you’re not at home when the power outage occurs. If it has phone and network ports to protect those devices from surges, that a plus.

My UPS Configuration

I personally use a Tripp Lite TE600 (approximate retail US$299) and it provides power to five things in the event of an outage: My PC, monitor, router, cable modem and desk phone. I included the router, cable modem and phone because sometimes the power fails but the cable and telephone services are unaffected. If you have a laser printer, I recommend that you DO NOT connect it to an outlet on the UPS that provides battery power, because laser printers suck down LOTS of power and will drain your battery very quickly.

I had an opportunity to test my UPS setup recently… during a storm, there was a power outage for about 15 minutes. The lights went out, but my computer and internet connection stayed on without missing a beat. I was able to make phone calls, send & receive emails, and browse the web while my neighbors were all cursing the darkness. Since then, the lights have flickered a few times, causing the other computer in my office (not connected to the UPS) to reboot. But my primary UPS-connected machine has been happily unaffected.

Natural Acne Products

Acne sufferers have a choice between medicated and natural acne products.

In contrast to medicated products which contain low to high concentration of Benzoyl peroxide or Salicylic acid, natural acne products make use of herbs and natural oils such as Tea Tree Oil, an antibacterial and cleansing agent; Lavender Oil, acne countering and preventing oil; and Rosewood Oil, an effective acne treating agent.

Like medicated products, natural products come as cleansers, scrubs, masks, gels, natural oils, and even herbal tablets.

ZEN MED Derma Cleanse System is a natural product that has cleansing gel for unclogging and cleaning pores, and herbal capsules to flush out harmful bacteria and replenish essential vitamins to fight acne from within. Enriched with essential Tree Tea Oil, Aloe Vera, Vitamin A, E, D3, C, Pro-Vitamin B5, Allatoin, and other vegetable ingredients, it is extremely effective against acne.

Among topical creams and gels, PhytoMe and Kiss My Face are two effective products for acne prevention. PhytoMe Acne Gel, made up of natural oils, vitamins, and herbs, treats acne and is suitable for all skins. Kiss My Face Botanical Acne Gel is a very efficient over-night treatment gel made up of essential oils.

Some natural acne products like Actimine, AcnEase, Xian 100% Acne Treatment, and 10 1E Acne Getaway are made up of ancient Chinese herbs and other essential ingredients suited to fight and prevent acne.

Prominent among natural cleansers and toners are Desert Essence 100% Pure Australian Tea Tree Oil, Burt’s Bees Garden Tomato Toner for Oily and Troubled Skin, and St Ives Facial Foaming Cleanser, which has Tree Tea Oil with Glycerin and hence cleanses skin without drying it.

Bio Skin Care’s Elicina Cream is a natural cream composed of vitamins, Allantoin, and proteins, which gently gets rid of dead cells and treats scars, leaving behind blemish-free skin.

Unlike Benzoyl peroxide, which produces dryness in sensitive skin, natural acne products while treating acne, also prevent too much drying. Natural acne products have been found to be equally effective as the medicated ones in treating acne. A wide array exists in the market. So, pick up the one, which suits your skin, the best.
